Neat! Whereas previously, the Messages app would spawn a new thread on my phone depending on whether something was sent as SMS or iMessage, it now keeps it in one thread. Probably something to do with the new APNs ;)

Soon edge and 3G will be gone. Tmobile plans to have LTE and fall back to HSPA+(4G)

I sincerely doubt that 3G will be gone soon, because why would T-Mobile have bothered to refarm their 3G spectrum to the 1900 Mhz band?

I am in Cleveland, OH.
Sometimes I get 3G (very rare). Friday I had full signal, and did this speed test. I could create a mobile hotspot until then.

Since friday i can't get 3G, only Edge. Now I did the carrier update, got visual voicemail, lost mobile hotspot, and the networkis still on Edge.

It says 3G in your screenshot.

Yes, losing personal hotspot sucks. Anybody have a clue on how to get that back?

Edge will be around for many years on T-mobile. They do not even have plans to replace the current edge towers anytime soon. Right now the refarming to 1900Mhz is only happening in places that already have 3G.

And 3G isn't going away. HSPA+ is built on top of 3G. In fact it is 3G (some call it 3.5G).

Not sure what that's about since Verizon phones haven't gotten the T-Mobile update and are not likely to get it--not to mention the comment wasn't really about that anyway.

Yes they did, my verizon iphone 5 got the carrier update OTA in Salt Lake City, Utah. Still seeing EDGE here, though.

if you were getting edge before the update, you are gonna get it after... The network hasn't been refarmed in your area.

Kills T-Mo Hotspot

I used my hotspot to download the update to iTunes since it's firewalled at work. Once the settings were set up it killed the very same Hotspot that gave me the update. Now I have to call T-Mobile to see if my plan will still support it. Bummer.

Yes, I tried rebooting the phone, enablind and disabling airplane mode... It seems like they have the 3G disabled in the area.

It is possible they are still working on that tower. When they are refarming it isn't uncommon for it to appear and disappear randomly.

Yeah, you gain visual voice mail and lose mobile hotspot (depending on the plan). Will catch many off guard at an inopportune time.

I've decided to forgo visual voice mail and the 4G icon for as long as I can, and keep personal hotspot enabled. I already have the correct MMS settings.

HotSpot

I think I figured out how the get the hotspot working. Mine worked fine, then after the update it stopped. I logged into my T-Mobile account online and went to "view plan and service details" Under "Services" I clicked manage and scrolled down to the HotSpot section. Listed there is the 500MB Smartphone Mobile HotSpot option and under price it shows FREE. I added this to my plan, gave it 5 minutes, restarted my phone, and it was then available and working perfectly.

Are you on the post-paid plan?

Got decent speeds with 3G in NYC so I'm not ready to give up my personal hotspot yet. Does anybody know how good 4G coverage would be? 3G is still very spotty in the outer Boros

I was wondering about this also. I'm in the Dallas, TX area and at 3G I consistently get a minimum of 5.7 Mbps in the suburbs and 10-13 Mbps in the metro area.
