Oh my god that's horrible!
If that is really going to be the new iPhone, count me out. There are a lot of really good android phones out on the market right now that use a proper large screen.
The new NOKIA 900 also looks pretty good, what are they thinking with a taller iPhone? What kind of movies are going to be better in this form factor? I cannot imagine what the keyboard is going to look like in landscape mode.
I will admit that I am not all that knowledgeable when it comes to screen sizes, but watching a movie on this would seem to have black bars on the sides.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that we go as big as something like the galaxy note, but would it not be possible to just make the pixels a little bit larger to accommodate a larger screen size?
The whole problem with having the current iPhone size if you are a proponent of a larger screen size is that it is too narrow, your eyes are focused to the center which is straining.
About a day ago or maybe more, MacRumors posted some pictures of the back and front of a new iPhone which was larger, but not taller like this. I really hope this is some kind of a Proto type, or a controlled leak to throw people off. I do like the iPhone, and I feel like it's a good gift for my family and friends. But I will not be giving them this piece of crap.
It's good that you admit to not being very knowledgeable on this topic. I recommend you reserve your judgement for when you see the real thing.

For instance, the newly suggested screen with an aspect ratio close to 16:9 would have much less (if any) black bars than the current 3:2, since most HD moves are exactly 16:9.

Nothing but hypocrites on this site. If these leaks are true over 99% of the current apps on iPhone release day will have black bars top and buttom or stretched out causing distortion. And people complain that Android is a fragmented mess. This is going to be a nightmare for developers. At least the Apps on Android scale regardless the screen size.
And Apple. If your going to cause issues with App's in the first place why not go all out with a 1280x720 4 inch display? The keyboard in landscape mode will not gain any height.

Everyone that says they are skipping this generation because of the screen size -do you actually think Apple would change the screen size for one generation of a device? NO. Either get on board or find a different platform. It's that simple.

Hey newbie! So, I guess you're telling us what to do now? No, that's not the way it works. In this forum we talk about technology, we discussed our likes and dislikes, we express our opinions about things we do and do not like about Apple and we find that the more our opinions are expressed the more people like Tim Cook at Apple listen. Don't think that just because Apple decides to do something you have to follow, and do not fool yourself that they are not listening. I have found that in the past many people have raised objections to various decisions and operating system flaws with in iPhone operating system. It would seem to me that when opinions are expressed, things change.

The whole "get on board, or get out" thing is ridiculous

Can I quote you if and when this launches?

Something I've been thinking about...

with all the leaks happening so fast, does this mean we will see a WWDC release instead of Sept/Oct?

June 29th is the 5 year anniversary of the iPhone's release. I know Apple doesn't usually seem to care much about these significant dates, but it seems possible.

This is an excellent problem for a developer to have. They will figure it out. They're smart people. If this phone comes out in October, this won't be an issue by Christmas.

That is a really good point! I admit I was not aware of that. However, how do you feel about the daily operations of the phone which do not involve video?

Are you in favor of this form factor? Do you feel like being taller is better then but the people in the android world are doing with their phones?

It seems to me like one of the main things I have a problem with, is the fact that the landscape keyboard is going to be taking up the same amount of space if not more than the current phone.

So you're saying that the 4S and 4 will become obsolete soon after the release of a new product? :O

The 4 is already going quickly obsolete, who'd buy a phone from 2 years ago with an antenna that short-circuits itself and is so poor at receiving calls?

yeah cause who wouldn't want to watch hd movies on a garbage looking 16:9 phone...

Split Keyboard?

With the wider width I wonder if Apple will do the split keyboard trick from iPad and let the content float behind the landscape keyboard. I do think landscape typing will take some getting used to on this new 16:9 aspect ratio. Personally, I am liking the look of this a whole lot.

I use the home button ALL the freakin time. I don't understand the need to get rid of it. And if they do get rid of it, how do you replace it?

Someone mentioned putting it on top or I'd like to see them go away from the push button and if they must do it like Samsung did on some of their phones. They could get rid of the physical button but leave the little square box and it's touch sensitive and lights up when you touch it. I always felt like the home button was a weak link on the phone with all the clicking and double clicking

Several ideas with a taller screen:
- They could fit a number row right on top of the keys! (So you wouldn't have to hit that tiny "123" button to access them.)
- For apps that remain at the same old 3:2 aspect ratios and are landscape, center them, with black bars at the edges. If they're at that old ratio and are portrait, just slide them to the bottom of the screen and let the top have a black border. That way, controls stay near the user's thumbs.
- The keyboard could be divided and floating like on the iPad, when it's in landscape.
- Widescreen movies wouldn't have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen anymore.

boy how exciting all these sound, can't wait to get in line, **** I ll start putting up a tent right now, a number row on top of the keys?!?!?! divided keyboard and no black bars for movies?!?!?! such excitement..

How many different resolutions are there for Apple vs Android? Apple has 4, and if the new iPhone is 4" then it will be 5. Are you able to count all the different resolutions for Android. They will probably be in the double digits. Eventually in a couple years the non-Retina devices have reduced in numbers so there would be 3 resolutions to support. I bet that iOS 6 or 7 will be the last version that supports the 3GS and earlier models.

On the other hand Android phone manufacturers are using the common 1280x720 resolution, so we should see fragmentation drop for Android if the trend continues.

From a UX standpoint, I absolutely agree, this makes more sense. There is just as much need for additional width in apps as there is for height. I'm sure Apple clearly realizes this. I would imagine that the majority use apps more than video on the iPhone, it makes more sense that they would be focused on improving the UX experience here and less on just removing the black bars from video. I would bet that this taller concept is a fake or prototype.

Only for a relatively limited amount of time. Android will always be fragmented unless they tell the manufacturers to make one or two screen sizes.

The iPhones and iPods with the new screen size will become the majority very quickly. Devices will become "obsolete" before fragmentation becomes a big issue.

That's my theory anyway lol

Hmm I'm still not sure if I'll like that they kept the width, if it is what's coming out. Either way I'll still upgrade, I'm due for one. The benefit of keeping the width is being able to use it with one hand, I suppose.

Android is resolution independent. The layout engine was designed from the beginning to accept any resolution and scale appropriately (based on the resolution and the size of the screen itself). iOS on the other hand was designed for only one and later they had to add others. Unfortunately that means every resolution needs its own layout for apps and the OS.

Heres some screenshots I just took with the android sdk.
The one on the left is a device thats resolution is 480x800 and it has nexus onscreen buttons. The one of the right is odd as I wanted to make it a resolution that doesn't actually exist on the device to prove how sophisticated the layout system is. Its 658x958. Both have lcd density set to 240. So android treats the one on the left as around a 3.9 inch screen and the one on the right is considered around a 4.85 inch screen. I can also increase that density to make it think that same resolution is on a 4 inch and it will scale the interface to fit that size screen. Also notice how it automatically adds in app menu buttons when it detects that the device doesn't have a dedicated menu button and uses software buttons instead.

It looks like a fricking remote. I hate it. Phones are not supposed to be 16:9 . Period. Sad thing is I'll probably still buy one when it comes out. Such is life when you are married to Apple's ecosystem.

Really? How can you be so sure?

Because if Apple are changing the aspect ratio and screen size of the iPhone, developers will NEED to know at the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference).

I'm sure it will be announced then but be released a few months later, maybe October to allow time for developers to update their apps.

I'm an iPhone and Android developer and unlike Android, iPhone UI elements use absolute pixel dimensions and positioning. Whereas Android is designed to work on lots of different form factors/size and all the UI widgets use relative dimensions and positioning.

What that means is that most apps apart from ones that use or inherit from UIScrollView will have elements positioned absolutely and will look odd and probably break.

When better to inform and teach developers how to work with the new screen size than WWDC?

"Phones aren't supposed to have touch screens"
"mp3 players aren't supposed be flash"
"computers aren't supposed to have touch screens"
"Tablets are supposed to have full desktop OS's on them"

You clearly have learned nothing.

Let's get something straight. Just because I do not choose the voice my opinion often doesn't mean I don't have one. Sorry I don't dedicate my life to this forum. Also if you look in the past when the iPhone 4 was leaked many people disliked it. Did Apple change their road map? NO. They went on to release the same design for an additional generation. Apple does what Apple wants because consumers are idiots and they don't know what they want until they have it. Apple didn't become one of the most profitable companies in the world by reading MacRumors.

People aren't asking for bigger phones, they are asking for bigger screens.

Let me put that into perspective
