I suspect, as others have alluded to, that this aspect ratio change is going to be done to (eventually) _simplify_ developer's lives: you'll have the 16x9 format to target for iPhone, iOS TV, and perhaps, in the future, iPad.

Apple has shown that they're willing to pay the cost in making changes now for simplicity further down the road, and this may be along the same lines.

This is a very good point.

Several ideas with a taller screen:
- They could fit a number row right on top of the keys! (So you wouldn't have to hit that tiny "123" button to access them.)
- For apps that remain at the same old 3:2 aspect ratios and are landscape, center them, with black bars at the edges. If they're at that old ratio and are portrait, just slide them to the bottom of the screen and let the top have a black border. That way, controls stay near the user's thumbs.
- The keyboard could be divided and floating like on the iPad, when it's in landscape.
- Widescreen movies wouldn't have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen anymore.

Why ?

Can you answer me with a few bullet points ?

Thanks.

I can't recall an instance where I felt inhibited by the current length of the iPhone screen, unlike the width of the screen which I feel makes web browsing particularly awkward.

It's not a problem that needed fixing, especially by increasing the length of the overall device on it's own.

To me, it's making the device unnecessarily longer.

My money is still on a 3.5 inch screen. A bigger screen would cause many headaches to the app developers. Plus, Apple doesn't have to make a bigger screen to break all sales records.

Why are you afraid of tech progress?
You can always stick to 4S and not buy this new phone. 4S is pretty fast and will serve you for many years. But let us have something new. Apple has smarter people that decides what looks good or not. Trust me, the final product would be eye pleasing as the 4 was.

Only for a relatively limited amount of time. Android will always be fragmented unless they tell the manufacturers to make one or two screen sizes.

The iPhones and iPods with the new screen size will become the majority very quickly. Devices will become "obsolete" before fragmentation becomes a big issue.

That's my theory anyway lol

Hmm I'm still not sure if I'll like that they kept the width, if it is what's coming out. Either way I'll still upgrade, I'm due for one. The benefit of keeping the width is being able to use it with one hand, I suppose.

So you're saying that the 4S and 4 will become obsolete soon after the release of a new product? :O

Not my cup of tea

Don't like.

Was going to switch from Android to iOS, but I'm on the fence now.

My belief is that none of this is real. Apple is smart enough not to do this.

Unless Cook really is that different.

i hope the new new iPhone will get rid of that annoying home button. "Zephyr" on Cydia basically made the home button obsolete for me and i wish apple would implement something like that

and are we certain that isnt a new iPod Touch screen? i mean, with the facetime camera like that and all

iPod touch probably wouldn't have the earpiece cut out, since it's not a telephone.

I'm quite interested to see how they pull off integrating apps of the old aspect ratio with this new ratio.

Simple. Since the aspect ratio of the 'supposed' iPhone 5 is 16:9, and the current iPhone is 3:2, all that will happen is that apps which haven't been updated for the new aspect ratio will just run in a box with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, meaning that developers don't need to recompile their apps, and the user doesn't need to do anything.

It's therefore up to the developer to update the app for a 16:9 display, or keep the existing 3:2 one :)

I Love It

I have been looking forward to this move on the iPhone since it first came out. I think this aspect ratio is great for a phone and especially for the video that most of us consume. I know it will take some time to adjust some apps but this is not the first time Devs have had to do that: iPad, iPhone 4, the 'new' iPad have all required new graphics/fragmentation of design.:):apple:

When will they finally start leaking photos of the new Mac Pro already!? :D

I just don't think this is the final design that Apple will be going with. It is definitely a prototype that will not be used. It just doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe I'm wrong, and if so I will definitely be getting one as I love iOS, but hopefully not. This just doesn't seem right. :apple:

My personal thought is that they have to release IOS6 at WWDC.

If there's to be ANY change in screen size then they'll have to show it to allow devs prep time.

If they do that then what's the point in NOT having the reason for the screen size change there and in the flesh?

Which seems strange after Tim Cook specifically mentioned "One Phone, one resolution" the other day...
That statement isn't true even today, if you consider the 3GS has a different resolution from the 4/4S. Sure, they are "Retina equivalent" but not exactly the same.

Of course, if you only consider the latest released iPhone only, instead of all currently sold/supported models, then by default there will always be only one resolution, even if it changes with each newly released device.

Simple. Since the aspect ratio of the 'supposed' iPhone 5 is 16:9, and the current iPhone is 3:2, all that will happen is that apps which haven't been updated for the new aspect ratio will simply run in a box with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, meaning that developers don't need to recompile their apps, and the user doesn't need to do anything.

You mean 4:3 ratio.

EDIT: Wait, I'm wrong! Sorry bout that!

How long until Samsung comes out with the Galaxy S IV "longboard" XZr.2131 LX? Which looks surprisingly just like this "iPhone 2012"

The resolution of 1136 X 640 on 4.07" screen will put out 320 ppi which is a step back from 330 ppi on 4/4S. That's really a insignificant change but still a Flagship phone getting a less ppi than the previous one?

3.95" Screen seems to be legit in this case because having the above resolution will give the exact 330 ppi.

Oh my god that's horrible!
If that is really going to be the new iPhone, count me out. There are a lot of really good android phones out on the market right now that use a proper large screen.
The new NOKIA 900 also looks pretty good, what are they thinking with a taller iPhone? What kind of movies are going to be better in this form factor? I cannot imagine what the keyboard is going to look like in landscape mode.
I will admit that I am not all that knowledgeable when it comes to screen sizes, but watching a movie on this would seem to have black bars on the sides.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that we go as big as something like the galaxy note, but would it not be possible to just make the pixels a little bit larger to accommodate a larger screen size?
The whole problem with having the current iPhone size if you are a proponent of a larger screen size is that it is too narrow, your eyes are focused to the center which is straining.
About a day ago or maybe more, MacRumors posted some pictures of the back and front of a new iPhone which was larger, but not taller like this. I really hope this is some kind of a Proto type, or a controlled leak to throw people off. I do like the iPhone, and I feel like it's a good gift for my family and friends. But I will not be giving them this piece of crap.

Oh please god don't let this be the final product  In terms of design great, but that longer screen is just awful. If they are going to increase screen size at least widen the phone at the same time.

Never before have we had their many "leaks" so early with video and non-blurry pictures of a new iProduct

yeah these "leaks" they surely need good soil and a lot of watering for their planting. :)

Honestly people, take a look at this and tell me, in all honesty, those that have some common sense and taste here (the rest you don't have to bother), doesn't this new iphone look like UTTER CRAP.

Don't some of you think, it can't be, they are fooling us with a prototype and they are going to come up with some redesigned curvy one with a big curved screen liquidmetal back etc. that looks stunning?

If this is indeed the new iphone wouldn't it be the biggest let down ever after what we ve heard about Steve spending his last days working on it, and two years for redesign.

TWO YEARS to redesign the iphone and they come up with THIS? Is this the best they can do? Damn...

Everyone that says they are skipping this generation because of the screen size -do you actually think Apple would change the screen size for one generation of a device? NO. Either get on board or find a different platform. It's that simple.

Apple has already made a big deal out of using the current screen ratio saying it's best, so why now would the ratio need changing? I don't buy that this is the final product.

The bulk of you guys are soooo funny. Go back to the threads about the 4s rollout and you'll see tons of people griping about how the "shell" didn't change enough so that it was obviously an upgrade from the "4". It didn't matter that the guts were thoroughly evolved in the 4s... "we" wanted it to look noticeably different too... presumably so we could smug around that we have the very latest iPhone.

Now, we get a stream of rumors heavy on shell changes (and curiously thin on the invisibles (gut evolutions)) and what are we doing? Griping about how we hate changes that would make it very obvious that we (can) have the latest & greatest iPhone.

Make up your minds... and stick with it.

Whatever rolls out, I bet better than half of you "I hate that" bashers will be posting "credit card is ready", "my delivery date shows...", "I'm already in line and the launch is not until next week", etc.
