My new report, filed on Dec 20th, went from `recent similar reports: None` to `Less than 10`. Please keep reporting this issue folks, it might be working!

To respond to a few previous comments:

  • My first MBP 14" had the same Diagnostics report issue related to the trackpad. Since I was one of the first customers to take delivery of these new devices, there weren't any reports of the bug just yet. So, thinking that it was a hardware problem, I immediately returned and replaced my device with an identical 14" MBP. Guess what, it had exactly the same issues, but it didn't show up that trackpad reference code in the diagnostics.
  • Since then, hundreds of people started reporting trackpad bugs, which were actually affecting many of the older M1 and Intel devices too. In 12.1 seed 4, Apple did address the `tap to click` being unreliable, and it got better. Since then, at least it does not miss the taps themselves on my 14".
  • However, on many 14", including brand new ones sitting at Apple stores right now, you can go and press `cmd + tap` to, say multi-select, or open a YouTube video in the background, only to watch that tap fail 2 times and only registering on the 3rd attempt. Multiple people have tried going to the store and have confirmed this.

I filed the new feedback report with this title because Apple replied to most people's previous feedback when they released seed 4, and asked us to file new feedback with this given title if it wasn't fixed.

As Traffy suggested above, if you're facing the same issue, make sure to file a report with the title "`cmd + tap to click` is not working in seed 4." And feel free to copy my bug report if you find that easier.

Everyone copy and paste this feedback. I will add the secondary click in mine. This is a mess. We shouldn’t have to struggle like this on a 3k device.

Edit : Also I think we are past due an article on the website about this to draw Apple attention on the issue. This is a big deal and not an isoleted case.

Today I was surprised to see on the main website an article related to Apple Watch charging that seems to be related to third-party chargers.
Isn’t this issue much more relevant since we are not modifying anything hardware-wise and machines are not behaving as they should? ?‍♂️

You are absolutely right.

But the replaced device will have the same problem, this is an infinite loop :p

I did!

Have anyone tried to reinstall Monterey without any installed applications to see if the issue still occurs ?
Yes, I did this at the Apple store last week and it did not fix the problem. The Genius Bar person even saw it do it again after the install. Her solution was...return it. LOL

how is pinch to zoom un 12.2?
Pinch to zoom is mostly reliable for me (MBP M1X), but every now and then (after several days), it stops working. E.g. in Apple Maps or Safari. Quitting the apps doesn't help, but a laptop restart fixes it.

I suspect it's a Monterey thing.

Can we have an article on the website about this ? I feel like it’s the only way now to put some light on the issue. We wrote enough feedback. The lastest I wrote with cmd + tap not working on the title and the one with trackpad still not working on 12.1 both are saying zero similar reports.
My guess is everyone are not going to put the same words in their feedback and many people can think that the issue is on their machine. I bet if there is an article on the website we will see comments like « I thought I was the only one »

Great idea!
How we can do that? May I help?

One thing I can potentially do is write a definitive Twitter thread on this bug, tagging @Apple and any other relevant engineers there. I can synthesize my own experience along with everything else I've read so far on this, include pictures and videos to illustrate and reproduce the bug, and link this thread + several reddit threads in there.

I'll do it if you guys are willing to retweet/share. Then, I can post the same on HackerNews to get some more nerd attention on it. What do folks think?

This is getting really weird. My M1 Air has no issues with trackpad: zoom, tap to click, tap to click plus modifier keys.

I’m not saying there isn’t a problem, but maybe centred on the new 14 machines? I’ve seen some manufacturing tolerances on some machines based on user feedback. Maybe avoid the 14 altogether?

Hope it gets fixed for everyone!

I think it's primarily the new M1 14, I had the problem and it was completely resolved with 12.1, running a 2016 MBP.

I just visited an apple store, to check the behavior on several devices by myself.

My result:
  • the CMD tap problem exists on all three 14" MBP 2021 in the store.
  • at any other devices everything is working absolutely perfect (one 16" MBP 2021, two 13" MBP 2020, two Macbook Air 2020)
PS: All devices were running macOS 12.1
PPS: Of course I could not get any help or update regarding the problem itself.

Yes. The fact that the cmd + tap is disproportionately affecting the 14" is what concerns me. As in,

1) Is it a hardware issue? if it were software alone, it would likely have affected all models on Monterey equally.

2) Are they ever going to actually fix it, since it's only affecting 14" and apparently most users do not use tap to click anyway? All of our feedback reports still say "similar reports: None"

It definitely looks like us 14" MBP buyers are being left as bag-holders in this case. I'm starting to consider getting rid of this device and going back to a MacBook Air M1. For my use case, the only real upgrade in the new 14" is the mini LED 14" screen. If anything, the battery life is somewhat worse than my previous M1 MBA. Having to face this terrible bug (and other issues on Monterey beta) has certainly soured my experience on this device. I was hoping better for something I paid $2,000 on the release date. May decide to get rid of this device, go back to MBA line, and then potentially upgrade to M2 MBA when it comes out next in '22.

Regarding top 1) are there any known 14“ MBP 2021 where CMD and tap-to-click is working properly since macos 12.1/12.2?

I haven't seen any. Many who noticed this issue on their 14" tried returning and replacing or walking into a store to try it out – all reported the same issue.
