It's not as bad as it was before, but it still misses taps occasionally for me.

With my old Macbook Pro 2016 it would register even the tiniest tap to click but with my new 14" it's not the case which is very disappointing. I thought that even BetterTouchTool could fix it, but there's no option there to configure the tap to click.
Maybe they've implemented it this way to avoid more palm rejection and stuff like that

I wonder how such a basic error has not been noticed during Apples internal testing. They have so much money, ungodly amounts of money but cannot employ enough testing teams to find all those bugs?

not saying this because I am affected but Apple should be embarrassed.

Still had no further information from support even though I have requested an update to my open case.

My guess is:
  • Since tap to click has to be enabled manually, I presume most people don’t use this feature.
  • Most people use a mouse when working on a computer.

Exactly, probably less than 5% users even know you can tap-to-click.

Do you think it's somehow related to the Photo OCR feature? It was rolled out on both Monterey and iOS 15 and both of them had touch/tap issues.

I have a problem with the double click, when "Enable dragging" is set to "without drag lock" many double clicks are ignored
How to reproduce the problem
1. from Accessibility -> Pointer Control (list on the left) click on the button "Trackpad Options..." turn on "Enable dragging"
2 open text editor (or firefox, safari, or the software you prefer allowing to double click to select something)
3. type some lines of text
4. start to double click words on different lines
5. every double click must select the word but this very often isn't true, only the cursor moves to the clicked position

Choosing a different dragging type "with drag lock" or "three finger drag" the bug is not present
I tried to change double-click speed without success
I tried to create a new user ad log in using it without success
I'm on Monterey 12.2.1 (21D62) Mac mini (M1, 2020)

Do you have the same bug? Obviously I have "Tap to click" enabled

I tried a new user, safe boot and reinstalling macOS. Nothing helped.

I called Apple support last night and they said they’ve never heard of this issue and couldn’t find anything in his known bug/issue database, oddly enough.

They setup a Genius Bar appointment for me which was today. At the store, they ran the trackpad diagnostics which came back fine. They said that they could send it away for service, but since I have serious doubts that will help and I also don’t want to go without my Mac for days, I turned that down. I’d rather just purchase another one and see if it is any different and then return this one. Although I’m concerned that won’t make much of a difference, especially if this is just a Monterey bug that still isn’t fixed since October when reports of this seemed to have come up since the release of this laptop.

While the Apple genius was running the trackpad diagnostics, I tested the two demo machines in the store and I was able to reproduce the issue with both as well. I wasn’t able to reproduce the issue on the 16” or MacBook Air’s.

I also stopped at Costco today and was able to reproduce it on that 14” as well.

The two people I know in person that have a MBP 14” oddly enough, report that they do not have this issue.

The original Apple support rep I spoke to on the phone is calling me on Wednesday to follow up. So I guess I just continue waiting for a Monterey update that addresses this.

Now what's the situation

Does anyone have an update on this problem? How sure are we that it is a software issue rather than a manufacturing defect?

I am within the return window for my new 14" but will hold onto it if this impacts all units and will only be resolved with a future OS update.

I'm personally sure it's software related, because it has manifested on multiple macs that have been upgraded to Monterey in addition to the new macbook pro that just arrived.

MBPs that have been upgraded began manifesting the bug. MBP that came with Monterey has the bug.

I returned my 14" MBP immediately within the week (Dec 2021) after discovering the tap-to-click issue on the first day. My reasoning is that I'm not going to pay $3k for a laptop that COULD be usable in the future. Can you imagine paying that much money for a laptop that has a defective keyboard, or limited RAM (to the point of unusable programs), and it has been known to have that issue for almost a year since beta, and there is no date in sight for when it'll be fixed? It's like giving Apple your money to say maybe you can use what you actually paid for some time in the future. It's ridiculous!

At this rate I'll probably just wait for maybe an M2Pro, or the next macOS. (I am still happily clacking on the M1 Air running Big Sur in the meantime though).

My 14" MBP arrived this week, and I noticed trackpad issues immediately, but especially that it doesn't always register 2 finger scrolling. Maybe 1 in 10 gestures just does nothing, which is really jarring, especially compared to the 11" 2013 MBA I've just replaced which works perfectly.

Something I've noticed though is that if I turn off scrolling with inertia, it's much more responsive. Does this affect the tap to click issue for any of you guys? I'm wondering if the issues are related.

This isn’t the cause of the issues described in this thread, but one thing I’ve found on my 16-inch M1 Pro is that the trackpad is so large that I sometimes inadvertently touch it with my pinky. This interferes with tap-to-click gestures and scrolling. The functioning of my old Dell XPS trackpad and the small trackpad on my Magic Keyboard for my 11-inch iPad are more accurate. Pretty disappointing.

I supposed no one has any positive note regarding this issue? At this rate we might as well hope Mac OS 13 bring a miracle.

constant problems with clicks and scrolling when selecting text with 3 fingers in monterey led me to downgrading back to high sierra, everything works fine again
