FWIW I have a 15'' 2019 MBP with the issue and a 16'' 2021 MBP with the issue.

UPDATE:: In the 16" model this problem persist, but different to the 14", let me explain: inside the red box it works without problem, but near the edges, outside the red box, it presents the problem of clicking three times to make it work by combining with Command or Shift. I checked on store and they have the same issue.

am finding that the issues persist regardless of the position.

An update on my situation: Apple have authorised a replacement MBP while they investigate the issue, with a view to not wasting any more time in case its a hardware issue...

edit:

estimated delivery June!!

I'm pretty sure it will have the same behavior...let's wait....

Totally agree to be honest. Am just tired of apple not resolving the issue so insisted that other possibilities be investigated in parallel so as to waste no more time. Apple wanted me to visit a Genius Bar for a repair to which I replied “I am not interested in having something that has not worked from day one repaired, not at this price point”.

I Agree! When get with mine of 14" they proposed to repair it, but it was clear when I told them that you can't repair something that has never worked on any equipment, even in exhibition ones. By the way, the behavior in the 16" previously mentioned I have replicated it in different stores.

Chances are I will return the replacement for a refund almost straight away and then pick up a used MBP to tide me over as I sold the 2017 MBP (also had issues) which this M1 replaced. Am not really willing to have this much money tied up in something apple “might” fix in future.

I imagine Apple doesn't fix it because there is a workaround of simply long pressing the trackpad in combination with the shift or command keys (namely, overiding the tap to click function - I assume this works?). A minor inconvenience to Apple but not for people who want everything to "just work" on a $2k+ machine.

Just tried one 14" MBP at Sam's Club, and it worked fine, the trackpad works with no lagging at all!

So I'm guessing now maybe it's the hardware problem!!! I returned my MBP for a new one, I'll keep on returning it if the problem persists.

I'm wondering if this is actually the case. When I went to return my 14" MBP at the store back in Dec 2021, the laptops at the store didn't exhibit the behavior, though I only tested two 16" MBP's.

I tested all the 16" ones at Apple Store here in my city, they were all fine. But all the 14" at the Apple Store exhibit the lagging problem at different level, at different level....

Let us know!!
Replacement has arrived and its not good news. Had macOS 12.2.1 on it which I updated to 12.3.1. Same issues when testing.

The keyboard on the replacement is much better than the original. Keys are not as loose feeling while typing which is interesting which I am going to raise with Apple but regardless of the results I would be rejecting the replacement unit as the screen is not aligned correctly to the top case. Classic post Jobs quality control in full effect!

OMG, keyboard? screen? WTH!

People have commented elsewhere about some keyboards feeling "loose" and finding replacements / shop demo units better. While better than the 2017 15" MBP keyboard I came from my original M1 Keyboard is very loose compared to the one which arrived today. The screen alignment issue is a simple fix, remove bottom cover and adjust the hinges but not something I am gonna do or should need to do to a brand new £3500.00 device. Am sure Apple will try and say that this is all "within tolerance".

Back to the topic issue... Can't work on this M1 anymore. I edit large numbers of photos, work with large spreadsheets and various other things which require a lot of double taps etc and the situation is hugely frustrating and just plain silly. I am now going to report back to apple care, reject the new "replacement" and push for a full refund on my original MBP as I am not happy to have spent £3500.00 on a device that might be fixed maybe sometime in future.

this is very frustrating to hear! I don't hold any hope for my replacement now...Can't believe post Jobs time can set such a low bar for quality control..

Dang, that sucks. Also, I didn't know about quality control issues regarding the keyboard. For such an expensive computer, this is crazy!

Indeed. To be honest I would take this keyboard over the 2017 rubbish but after trying the "replacement" there are defiantly differences for the better.

Can confirm. M1 Pro 14" on 12.4: Tap to click generally works well alone, but fails pretty reliably if a modifier key is pressed. Often requires three taps for a modified click to register.
