MBP 14" 2021 - same problem. Touch-to-tap when holding down Option or CMD key is flaky. It happens occasionally, maybe 20% of the time. It happens in any app, including on the toolbar (Option tap-to-click on wireless for example).

I have found that it is pretty consistent that three tries are required to make tap-to-click work when holding the Option or CMD keys.

I have opened a problem on the Apple website and I have also been in touch with Apple through online chat support. No response from the problem report. For online chat they told me to bring it to a Genius Bar, which I did not do due to COVID lock downs in my city (Ontario, Canada).

I'm a pretty optimistic consumer and wait for fixes to come. I have patiently waited, like many of you here. Last night I emailed Tim Cook.

Fed up.

I’m so disappointed with this issue still not fixed after months and I’m going to let the genius bar “repair” this. Maybe they can start to respond after we start to waste each other’s time.

Thanks to a post on Reddit, my 2 finger scrolling issues are fixed after disabling LOW POWER MODE. Hope this helps some of you.

(Still having issues with tap to click when holding CMD, etc)

May you help me to understand if this bug affects only my two Macs (mac mini M1 and MBP 2017) or is a common issue?

I have a problem with the double click when "Tap to click" is turned on together with "Enable dragging" set to "without drag lock", with this configuration many double clicks do no select the text under the pointer

The problem occurred to my mac mini since the first version of Monterey, yesterday I updated my MBP to Monterey and the bug popped up also on this machine!!!!

How to reproduce the problem

1. Turn on "Tap to click" (System preferences -> Trackpad -> Point & Click -> Tap to click)
2. Turn on "Enable dragging" (System preferences -> Accessibility -> Pointer Control -> click on the button "Trackpad Options..." )
3. open you preferred text editor (or safari, or any other software allowing to double click to select something)
4. type some lines of text, one long word per line is a better approach to reproduce the bug
5. start to double click words on different lines
6. every double click must select the word under the pointer but this very often isn't true, only the cursor moves to the clicked position

Choosing a different dragging type "with drag lock" or "three finger drag" the bug is not present
I tried to change double-click speed but the bug is present
I tried to create a new user ad log in using it but the bug is present

I booted BigSur from external disk and the magic trackpad works like a charm, so it isn't a hardware problem.

Selecting text while scrolling. 3 fingers on the trackpad.

It's a disaster.

I'll also pitch in and write to him today.
Never done that before - do you have any tips how to do it to increase the likelihood of a reply or action?

Of course stay constructive and polite.
First/last name basis?
How much technical details?

Edit:
Mail sent. I can only encourage others to do the same thing. The more mails Apple gets, the more attention this topic will get and hopefully we'll get a fix soon.

My new 14" MBP just arrived two days ago, and I noticed the trackpad issue right away...took it to the genius bar the next day, and they found no bug through diagnosis. I tested all the MBP 14" on display in the store, and the issue is universal...Hate to say this but feel a bit relieved to see I'm not the only one. BTW, emplyee at the genius bar here in China said he worked at the development department, and 12.6 has finished developing before the release of 12.3 and it seems the problem persists on 12.3, I'd say they won't fix it soon....We have to bombard them with complaints..

The problem persists

issue continues for myself also. Am on the phone with AppleCare as I type, submitting 1.5GB of logs and capture data.

Edit:

I have also escalated the issue / my case to sales support and raised a complaint to the Apple Executive. Interestingly all the Apple Care reps I have been speaking with have always denied any knowledge of this issue however today the representative said "oh, there was a new update in which this issue is addressed. Please update to 12.3.1 and you should be good". His tone changed when I informed him that the uploaded logs and capture data were for versions 12.2.1, 12.3.0 and 12.3.1 lol

Haha brutal!

I must say goodbye... the issue was no longer tolerable after so many updates, so from now on I am happy with a 16" MBP without the problem...
My tap to click issues are on a 16". Are you not having any related issues at all with yours?
