And never mind. I'm just an idiot. App was showing iPad 1. It is very early, and I am going back to boring, ipadless sleep.
I did a search with the target app for iPad 2 and only the White 64GB WiFi showed up in the search. I checked for nearest locations and found 1 a few miles from my work as limited availability. Searching by item number didn't work.

I take that back. Item numbers are working. But only for the item numbers that show stock near by.

I have been checking in South Florida the past few days, and have only seen a few in inventory and none showed up new yesterday morning (wifi only models). This morning 7 64GB white wifi models showed up (1 at each store) all over South Florida. I dropped off my son at daycare at the usual time and headed over to the Hialeah store which was the closest and sure enough, one 64GB white wifi Ipad 2 was sitting in the case which i promptly bought. The electronics manager said it was the only one the got last night, and the first one since their launch allocation.

Same here. Was able to pick-up a white 64gb wi-fi. A bunch of stores in the Chicago suburbs got this in stock last night. Went in promptly at 8, saw one lonely iPad 2 box in the display, and waited for someone to help me. Right when that person came up to me, another lady w/ a kid was walking up asking. I felt bad, but I did my share of waiting that morning for the store to open.

It seems like Apple must have shipped a bunch of the white 64gb wi-fi's into Target's stock last night. But again, it seems that it was just 1 per store.

Thanks again for this post and godspeed everyone who is still looking.

I've been checking the supply of every white version for about 4 days now, numerous times a day and have yet to see any of the ten or so stores that show up have ANY stock at all.

Every store, every model, every time, OUT OF STOCK.

Keep trying. My stores showed no inventory on Monday and then in the middle of Tuesday night the stock status began to change (around 11PM) and continued to change during the night. By 5:30 there was inventory (not a lot of inventory but limited inventory= one in stock/ available= two or more in stock) at numerous stores in my area. I picked the one that showed multiple models as available and went to that store before the opening bell. Turns out that available at this store meant 2 units of each of the two models that showed. Someone else went to another store that showed available inventory and there were 7 pieces of that model so keep trying and go early.

Huge thanks to this thread.

I used the links to check availability before bed and then this morning. The target in Gaithersburg, MD came up showing limited availability this morning so I got there at 7:15. It wasn't a big deal getting there because its right next to my work.

When I arrived there was one person there talking to an overnight stock person out front. He informed both of us none came in overnight and the other guy left. I stayed knowing that the inventory site showed limited availability. At about 15 minutes to opening a team member came to the doors and asked what I was waiting for. I told him the iPad 2 and he told me that none came in overnight. I explained to him that the stock online shows limited availability which means one. I told him I had the inventory number so he got out his scan gun and punched it in. He said that it showed 1 but that no one was aware where it was so he told me that he'd go look and come back to me. About 2 minutes before the store opened he came back and said it had been located, that one did come in overnight but no one knew and that when the doors open he'd walk me up to electronics and check me out. At that point one other person had shown up hoping to get an iPad 2 but that was all they truly only had that one.

I ended up walking out of the store at 8:05am with a 64gb White iPad WIFI.

This is why being armed with the information on their inventory makes a difference. And persistence pays off. Glad to hear you found one.

Target in my area don't have ****!
Nothing shows up available online.
Does that mean it's not in the system yet?

Yes. It means that there is nothing physically in the store. Keep checking. And make sure you check again between 10PM and 5AM (we have seen the inventory change as late as 10:30AM in the morning). Don't give up and once you locate inventory get there early in the morning. Especially tomorrow (Saturday).

Looks like we'll have to do the same grind tmrw morning! Since no knows when stores get the shipment. Anyways, so what are most folks buying?32 or 64? I was bent on 64 earlier but now think 32 is a better choice since this is not really a music player. So isn't 32 enough for apps, podcats and couple of movies? iPad really cannot be used as a file storage since apple does not allow that.

I bought a black 32gb. It will certainly be enough. But if faced with only a 64gb in any color I would have probably bought it. I already have a MBP and an iMac 27, an itouch and an iphone 4 VZN so the gb size was less important.
I want to travel with it so it is perfect for the long plane rides.

Thanks OP, I woke up a little late today and checked stock around me, the Crystal Lake, IL target had "limited avail." for the 64GB white, so I rushed over, assuming my 20 minute drive would allow someone else to snag it, but I got it. After all my indecisiveness it's nice to just have one and not check order statuses anymore.

Scored two this morning. After the debacle with the Southington, CT store the other day (online inventory claimed "Available" (i.e., 2 or more) of the AT&T 16GB Black but after driving 45 minutes to get there, and wasting further time while they looked for them, I walked out empty handed), I checked early this morning and saw new inventory pop up at the Enfield, CT store for the 32GB Black WiFi. Raced over there to get there before 9am (got there about 8:55am). One older lady was standing there waiting for the doors to open and I was a bit worried that she might be there for an iPad. Right before the doors opened, a 40-something woman and a younger guy showed up. Doors opened and I walked briskly to the Electronics department. Sure enough, they had two in the case. The younger guy showed up to the department a minute later. He and I talked for a minute and he said he was really looking for the white 64GB, but he'd take one of these if I wasn't planning on buying both. I told him I would have bought them both, but that he could have one if they didn't have the one he really wanted in the back (while I was there I checked the target inventory on my iPhone and confirmed that they should have had one white 64GB, too).

Meanwhile, the employee informed me that he could only sell one per customer, anyway. He then checked the back and couldn't find any white 64GB's, so I bought one of the black 32GB, and the other guy bought the other. As I was being rung up, a phone call came in and I heard the employee inform the caller that they had already sold out of the two that just came in.

Only 15 minutes away from the Enfield store is the Holyoke, MA store. The inventory checker had shown "Available" for the black 32GB WiFi there as well, but had shown that since the same day as my Southington adventure, so I didn't have much faith in it being accurate. Still, I was only 15 minutes away so I raced over there. Sure enough, they had two, which the guy still had packed away in the cardboard shipping box. He also told me one per customer, so I bought one and left, after confirming that they didn't have any accessories.

The Holyoke mall also has an Apple store, so I figured, what the heck, I'll stop over there to see if they had any iPads or the red leather smartcover that my wife wanted. After putting my 2nd iPad in my car trunk, I went over to the mall entrance and walked towards the Apple store. It appeared to still be closed (by now it was about 9:30-9:40am), but there was a long line of people outside. I thought about checking with one of them as to whether the Apple employees had already walked the line and given out slips, but figured that the line was long enough that there was little chance of them having enough inventory for me (if they had any at all). I also thought about quietly informing one of them that the Target a few steps away still had one Black 32GB WiFi, but how would I choose who to tell and if they hadn't gotten a slip yet, I wouldn't want them to risk leaving the line only to find that someone had already claimed that last unit from Target. I wanted to take a picture of that line, though. It was funny but sad thinking about this long line of people waiting for the Apple store to open their doors, when a couple of them could have claimed both of the units from the Target a few steps away 30 minutes earlier.

Not to mention, a 64GB white wifi showed up in Manchester Target's inventory last night. If only Target were getting ATT 3G models. :(

All Targets within 25 miles of 48197 are Out of Stock except Livonia.

I almost went there this morning - however something inside tells me I don't really want to have to work so hard to get one of these. I can wait a month or two.

So technically is Target the only game in town now? Apple had ridiculous lines and Best Buy has taken pre-orders. Is checking the Best Buy inventory even worth it? Are they actually selling any if you ask or are they solely going to those who put $100 down?

There are many who are now bailing and canceling their BB orders because they have located units elsewhere. Since Target seems to be the only one where you can actually see the inventory many have opted to chase a unit that actually exists versus chasing air at apple stores (a deliberate pun) and chasing promises at BB, BH and JR Music World.

It is really a crap shoot. My hope would be that apple floods the market and puts the resellers up a creek without a paddle. They are the ones that have exacerbated an already tight inventory situation.

Amen to that.

QUESTION: Why Did "dcmetro" go out of his way to change "gankit's' post to confuse readers to believe there were many ipad 2 available, when gankit only said two were available???

no, that was my bad... I originally thought there were a bunch but about half of them were iPad 1s, I couldn't see the pictures on the box. I met with someone from macrumors there, I guess it wasn't you dcmetro! haha

BB is not taking pre-orders anymore. Atleast in my area. Called two stores in the area to confirm that.

Yeah, I have a iPhone 4 as well which is my music player. So iPad would be for browsing, podcats and movies mostly. Therefore thinking of using the $100 for case, covering back etc. Unless 64gB demands a good resale next year :)

Thanks for the info

This Target tracking info is really great. Except...early this morning I checked for the one model I want - White 64gb ATT - and it showed limited availability at one store on the way to work. Got there about 10 mins before opening, but already about 5 scalper pack mules in line and one poor guy who looked like he just wanted it for himself. He was first in line. When the door opened the mules RAN to the electronics dept. (trying to outrun each other) and got the only one there. It's probably being packaged for shipment to Hong Kong right now. This Target was in Irvine, CA so I would expect this to be a daily occurrence.

I just refuse to actually run through a store to drop almost a grand on something, but hopefully the supply will ease up soon and the scalpers will drop away.

Anyway whoever posted the DCPI's and links - thanks! I will keep checking.

My iphone is also my music player and my kindle reader. It is the photos and videos that are space hogs. So I guess the more memory the better. My iphone is 32gb and after uploading over 2000 songs I still have plenty of room.
But I guess that I would have bought a black 64gb given that choice. But with all the other gear I didn't see the need. It is tough to know what next year will hold in terms of resale. You get the one you want if it is available. I didn't want to go crazy since I just bought the vzn iphone 4 32gb.

I am going to try to hit Holyoke and Hadley Targets first thing Sat am and hope for the best. The Apple store is nice, but no way...

Keep checking. Unfortunately the mules seem to be able to read and unfortunately may have gleaned the inventory info from this thread. All we can hope is that the market gets flooded in the near future and these fools go away. I would also call a prospective store and try to talk the person in electronics into holding it for you. Make sure you relay the story about the mules. Some of the Target associates are upstanding citizens and will not appreciate their regular customers getting outrun.

something totally BS has took place @ Puente Hills target

so i woke up at 7:25am decided to check if any local target has any ipads in stock, "white 64G 3G AT&T" was located @ target below.

Limited Availability - DIGITAL AUDIO Aisle F27
Puente Hills
Now with Fresh Grocery

17751 Colima Rd
Rowland Heights, CA 91748
(626) 913-2880

so i head there, got there at 7:55AM

there were people waiting already, i know my changes are low but i figure since i'm already here let's just wait park and take my chances that they had more then enought.

as i parked and reach the door, there was a middle aged woman front of the door waiting for it to open. (she's first in line)

2nd was a male

3rd and 4th were together older (they were not here for the ipads)

5th was me.

as the door open the woman rushes in headed for the tech section.

2nd male was taking his time heading in the same direction

i was behind him and what do i hear, a target member at the register receving a radio call, screaming where is the guy where is the guy you mentioned?

reply was, his on his way he'll be right there.

i didn't think much at this time.

however when i saw the tech area, the woman was talking to a male in red shirt with the name tag "John" on his chest. his hands behind him hiding something she asked if they had the ipad2.

john reply: yes we do but just one and it's already sold. no more today.

i joined in: all out today? did you have any?

john reply: yea we had one and it's 64G 3G AT&T but it's already sold.

woman: sold? sold to who? that male that just walk by?

John reply: yes he asked for it first.

woman: ask? i was here first

John reply: but he asked first

i joined in again: how could he have asked? we were all outside before the door open and she as here to this department first.

john reply: he asked someone that was outside of the store while you were all waiting. and i have the ipad2 here in my hands and it's his.

i joined: umm this doesn't make any sense or fair as she was first in line and first that got to you with the ipad 2 in hand.

John reply: it doesn't matter he asked first so it's his no questions it's final and walks away.

at this time i think everyone should be calling or droping by your target local target store and ask someone to make sure to reserve a ipad 2 for you.

as this could be their new policy now, screw first come first serve.
