Scored two this morning. After the debacle with the Southington, CT store the other day (online inventory claimed "Available" (i.e., 2 or more) of the AT&T 16GB Black but after driving 45 minutes to get there, and wasting further time while they looked for them, I walked out empty handed), I checked early this morning and saw new inventory pop up at the Enfield, CT store for the 32GB Black WiFi. Raced over there to get there before 9am (got there about 8:55am). One older lady was standing there waiting for the doors to open and I was a bit worried that she might be there for an iPad. Right before the doors opened, a 40-something woman and a younger guy showed up. Doors opened and I walked briskly to the Electronics department. Sure enough, they had two in the case. The younger guy showed up to the department a minute later. He and I talked for a minute and he said he was really looking for the white 64GB, but he'd take one of these if I wasn't planning on buying both. I told him I would have bought them both, but that he could have one if they didn't have the one he really wanted in the back (while I was there I checked the target inventory on my iPhone and confirmed that they should have had one white 64GB, too).
Meanwhile, the employee informed me that he could only sell one per customer, anyway. He then checked the back and couldn't find any white 64GB's, so I bought one of the black 32GB, and the other guy bought the other. As I was being rung up, a phone call came in and I heard the employee inform the caller that they had already sold out of the two that just came in.
Only 15 minutes away from the Enfield store is the Holyoke, MA store. The inventory checker had shown "Available" for the black 32GB WiFi there as well, but had shown that since the same day as my Southington adventure, so I didn't have much faith in it being accurate. Still, I was only 15 minutes away so I raced over there. Sure enough, they had two, which the guy still had packed away in the cardboard shipping box. He also told me one per customer, so I bought one and left, after confirming that they didn't have any accessories.
The Holyoke mall also has an Apple store, so I figured, what the heck, I'll stop over there to see if they had any iPads or the red leather smartcover that my wife wanted. After putting my 2nd iPad in my car trunk, I went over to the mall entrance and walked towards the Apple store. It appeared to still be closed (by now it was about 9:30-9:40am), but there was a long line of people outside. I thought about checking with one of them as to whether the Apple employees had already walked the line and given out slips, but figured that the line was long enough that there was little chance of them having enough inventory for me (if they had any at all). I also thought about quietly informing one of them that the Target a few steps away still had one Black 32GB WiFi, but how would I choose who to tell and if they hadn't gotten a slip yet, I wouldn't want them to risk leaving the line only to find that someone had already claimed that last unit from Target. I wanted to take a picture of that line, though. It was funny but sad thinking about this long line of people waiting for the Apple store to open their doors, when a couple of them could have claimed both of the units from the Target a few steps away 30 minutes earlier.
