Worked out for me at the Modesto, CA. Target store. Took in my 1st generation iPad 16 GB and received a $200 gift card. Did not have to buy anything to get the card. In and out in 10 minutes. The lady that helped me also let me keep the cord and charger. Happy, Happy, Happy.

I traded in 2 1st gen iPads yesterday for $400. Bought a mini for $299 and got a $25.00 gift card as a bonus.

Note that the Ipad gift card is different from regular Target gift cards. Read the back of the card! The iPad card has an expiration date. Mine expires mid January. Regular Target cards have no expiration date.

Only Targets with Mobility stores are participating in this promo which I suspect is generally the Super Target stores. Check the Target store locator.

You may want to read the back. That is 01/22 as in January 2022 for the card only. Additionally, it states funds never expire.

do you guys return the box, charger, cable? Or they give you the gift card by just trading in the naked iPad?

I went through the trouble of actually putting it back in the original box, original charger , cable, and little booklet. Dude asked me to just give him the iPad and take all the other stuff with me. I can always use extra chargers and cables for my other gear. Sweet!

east bay area update:

the new store in alameda is apparently unable to do iPad buybacks.

the store in albany/berkeley (right on highway 80) had run out of gift cards in the early afternoon, but an employee who lives in richmond went above and beyond, stopping at the richmond store to pick up more gift cards on his way in to work. the person at the mobile kiosk had taken a list of names and called everyone back when the cards arrived! there were a LOT of iPad 1's in the cabinet.

there were no restrictions on the gift cards and i could have left the store but instead i bought a new iPad air.

a great day for iPad 1 owners :)

Doesn't work for international iPads

Unfortunately, I was not able to trade in my original iPad, which I purchased in the UK. The Target Mobile rep will pull up your model number from your device, and if it ends in "B," like mine did, they were not able to accept the device. Bummer. But it's a great promotion!

Got it, but only for immediate purchase in store

I was able to get the $200 trade-in for my iPad 1 at a Durham, NC store, but they did require immediate purchase of an in stock Apple product. They were sold out of almost everything, but I picked up a 32GB iPod Touch. There seems to have been a lot of confusion, and this store had originally been giving out the gift cards for use on anything at an time. The word just came down yesterday that it was intended for an immediate purchase of another Apple product. Made sense to me, and I was thrilled to get $200 for my almost obsolete iPad.

The store rep did say that you could return your purchase later and exchange it for an iPad Air when that product was back in stock.

I shared this post in the other thread, but thought I would post it here as it seems that more people are following this thread.

I traded in my first gen. iPad at Target this morning. I accidentally showed up before they opened, but was the first in line when the guy showed up at 11:00. The entire process took about 10 minutes, which was probably slowed a bit as the guy had to answer the phone while I was there.

It was a very smooth process.

The CSR told me that I can use the $200 GC for anything in the store. He wasn't sure about on-line. One of the other people in line said that they called a different, nearby location and were told that the GC had to be used in the Electronics Department.

I might have picked up an Air this morning, if they had the one I am considering. I ended up buying a few other things and the GC worked just fine.

My Target insisted that I use the $200 immediately towards a new iPad only, but they offered to ship any model to my house if it wasn't in stock. Overall, it was a pretty painless experience, and they didn't hesitate to take my dinged-up and lightly-scratched 16GB iPad 1 from me.

It appears some cities have restrictions that won't allow this offer. Even though there's a Target right around the corner from me, I was told I'd have to drive to another Target store 35 minutes away "because it's outside of the city limits". They also said that store was out of stock of the "cards" (but not necessarily new iPads) and that I'd have to go there Saturday morning, as they were expecting a new shipment of them then.

Additionally, the online Target trade in website strangely does not seem to know about the $200 when you go to check your model, as mine shows up as being worth only $65, even though the $200 offer is mentioned right there on the same page.

So the whole thing seems a little flakey, I'm afraid I'm going to get burned driving 70 minutes (35 x 2) only to find they are out of stock or there's some weird string attached.

Target was gonna give us only like $205 for my wifes iPad2 32gb w/3g, so instead we swapped with a good friend of ours.

They had a 16gb iPad1 WiFi.

So our friends got a free upgrade, it was nice to help them out, as they don't have a lot of disposable income currently as they have 2 daughters in college.

We got a $200 Target gift card this afternoon for the iPad1.

We haven't decided on a mini or an air quite yet.

That's a really great idea, win-win. Maybe I'll do that with my iPad3.

Went to my local Target on 116th Street in NY. They said they were out of gift cards... therefore couldn't process the return. Took down name and number and said they would call once/if they got new cards in. Honestly... sounded like a lot of BS.

Better than my local store. Took 20 minutes and three staff members to get to the only guy that could do it and to find out that they were out of cards. No 'check back we might get more tomorrow' or 'we'll take your name and number' etc. Just 'we are out of the cards, go away'

My reply to the guy was ask him why he didn't bother to tell the rest of the department staff they were out of cards. Was that information so top secret that no one else could know it.

Well, just got back from the local Target. Yesterday they had plenty of iPad Airs. Today they were completely sold out. In fact, every Target within 100 miles was sold out. I got the $200 card anyway -- but it's not a "gift" card. It's a special card that can only be used for an item in the electronics section. I'm going to wait until the store is re-stocked, then get the Air. No rain checks were offered. It seems like each Target has its own rules....

I have a shipping label that I got online when they first announced this deal. I had to use the code NOVIPAD200 but all I have to do is ship it in before the end of November (They need to receive it by December 5), and I will receive a $200 gift card. Has anyone else done it that way?

Traded in my first gen IPAD 1

Got 200$. I was at the store around 11:15. They only had the one "Mobility" guy who showed upa minute or two after 11:30. I had already restored the Ipad to factory defaults and it took about 10 minutes to get a no strings attached gift card. When I left there were about 9 other people waiting. This was in Columbia Maryland (Howard County I think) so there wasn't the "pawn law" issue.

I traded in 4 1st gen iPads in the last two days, and dealt with 3 different Mobility people at 2 different Target locations - and all 3 had different rules.

According the Target Mobility people, here in Utah they have pretty strict pawn laws (although nobody could explain it further than that), so you have to buy a new iPad on the spot and apply the $200 credit toward the new iPad. Yesterday the Mobility guy was letting people use the $200 credit toward an online order if the store didn't have the iPad they wanted in stock, but the order had to be placed as the Mobility guy watched. Today the other Mobility guy at the same store wouldn't do that - said it was 'illegal', but it didn't really matter as all Airs on Target.com showed out of stock, so couldn't order one anyway.

Yesterday I walked in with two 1st gen iPads and walked out with a 64GB Air and a 32GB Air. Today both stores were sold out of Airs, so I ended up having to buy a 32GB 4th gen iPad at one store (the last iPad they had), and then a 32GB mini at the other store to get the $200 trade-ins. The electronics guys at both stores recommended this as my only option as they didn't have any Airs in stock, and they explained that if I don't open them I can exchange them within 30 days, so I'll just watch for stock of Airs at the stores. Worst case I'll return them and get $200 gift cards and apply them to online Air orders. Target is doing an additional gift card promotion on all of the previous iPads, so I ended up with a $25 gift card with the mini, and a $40 gift card with the 4th Gen. Not bad.

One of the Mobility guys was complaining that usually he only deals with phones, but this week he's actually had to work constantly for his whole shift each day. "I can't believe Target would do this kind of promotion and make me so busy..." Rough life I guess.

That's bull, lol! I bought 4 gallons of Peak pre-diluted coolant, a can of WD 40, and some food items with that card this morning. And my experience with the trade in of my 1st gen Wifi + cellular was nothing but smooth! I actually WANTED to buy an iPad Air from them with the $200 gift card applied towards it and return the iPad Air I bought from Apple retail store, but Target didn't have any in stock!

I still can't believe I got $200 for my 1st gen iPad! (16 GB, WiFi+Cellular)

They changed their policy in Utah stores today.

Yesterday they were following the pawn laws and you had to leave with a new iPad when you trade one in. But today they were allowed to give me 2 gift cards for 2 1st gen iPads which I can bring in at a later date when they have the new airs in stock.

Worked great

Glad I saw this, just went down this evening and turned in a first Gen iPad and $99 for a current Mini+additional $25 dollar gift card (luckily enough it was the last iPad they had period and just happened to be the one I wanted). Mobility agent said she had about 10 come in that day and we could use the card for anything we wanted (South Hill, Puyallup WA).

I traded in my 1st gen 16GB WiFi and the wife traded in her 2 year old iPad 2. Took less than 5 minutes for the guy to do the paperwork for both and we had 2 $200 gift cards we could spend anywhere in the store.

Best part was that last year the iPad 2 was dropped and the display glass cracked. I repaired the the iPad with parts from Amazon, and the feel of the glass and digitizer had never been the same, but they took it anyway.

We left with a 16GB white iPad mini, a Belkin case and $57 dollars left over on one of the gift cards plus the additional $25 gift card for purchasing the mini. Was pretty awesome. Irvine/Tustin Marketplace Store in Orange County, CA.

Which store was this? Both the Sandy and Orem stores wouldn't do that when I was there in early afternoon - I had to buy iPads I didn't want to return/exchange at a later date (post above).

Is everybody really picking up a mini? No one waiting for the retina? Can I really purchase a different ipad and return it when the retina comes out?

We'll I took my $200 gift card to target tonight and I was able to purchase a American Express for target card. This is not a regular gift card it is a reloadable Amex card. They actually take you ss# dob name and address. They mail a permanent card with pin to you in 7-10 days and you can use the temp card for 30 days.

It does cost 3 dollars to load a card but you can use two cards to load the Amex. Here is what I did picked out a iPad air on the apple web site and got the exact amount with tax for the iPad air I wanted . Went to target and at the register I told her the amount for the iPad plus tax at the apple website($1108.32 I think) I never told the cashier I was using the gift card and do not tell the cashier you are just swipe the card and it should take the $200 off the card and put it on the Amex then use another CC for the rest. In my case it took 200 off the gift card then I use another CC for the $908.22 for a total of 1108.32 on the Amex for target card then use the new Amex card to buy the iPad on the apple website or you can do it at the apple store. Yes this cost $3.00 to load the card with the $1108.32. The total was 1111.32

The Amex for target card is used by people to get extra points on their CC with very little out of pocket cost. They put 400 bucks on it with a CC from Citibank to get 5x points then use Amex and PIN number to take cash out an ATM and pay citi bank card back
