we took advantage of this yesterday. I had a 1st gen 16gig, online it said it'd be worth $65, but in-store they gave me the $200 - I probably could've used the card for anything, I don't know if the sales guy would've cared. Anyway, I bought the mini - on sale for $329, so I paid $129 for it, plus they give you a $25 gift card.

The thing I don't get it is that the ipad mini is now $299 and Target is selling it for $329 at B&M stores? Even target.com states its $299 now. Even with the $25 gc it's 5 bucks more than buying it Apple's stores. Well, I'm going to my Target tonight after work and when I wipe my original 16gb to trade it in.

Success!

wow im in texas and the closest Target "Mobility" store is in NC!

I called my local Target and they said the were doing it. They have a small mobile kiosk I'm store. Literally like 6' of space and so small I never noticed it before. Anyway, just took my 32gb iPad original and got $200 for it. Probably going to put it towards the new mini upon release.

To the guy who didn't want to give up his first gen, I hear ya, and felt the same way, but the deal was too good.

Technically yer supposed to buy something right there but just tell them yer waiting for the iPad mini retina.
Don't erase before you go. They want to look at the settings app for model.
I would trade yer ipad 2 for $200. It's worth more and still supported.
iPad 1 is a great workhorse for kids but being stuck in ios 5 with no camera and being a slow dog makes this a no brainier.
I actually think they didn't intend to include the ipad 1.

I live in Columbus, OH and went to my regular Target store by campus tonight. I traded in my 1st gen. 32GB WiFi+3G for the full $200. I specifically inquired if I could use that $200 for ANY purchase at Target, and they verified that YES I COULD.

All they asked for is the iPad, of course, and a driver's license. No other questions asked. No pressure to buy any other products. No stipulation to purchase an iPhone, iPad, or anything else on the spot.

A really good deal.

Some people are making this way too complicated than it is.

Most Target Stores carry and sell cell phones and there is a TINY register where you can take your iPad for the $ 200 minimum credit.

I bought a ipad 1 (did not have one to trade in prior to my CL purchase) off CL for $ 100 and turned it into $ 200 Target store credit. They give you the $200 on a Target gift card which can be used for anything in the store.

I had to order my online since they didn't carry the model/cellular version I wanted.

They matched the $299 for the iPad Mini for me at my store, so the deal is even better if you ask (although YMMV). So $200 back for my iPad first gen (glorified movie player), then $299 for the iPad Mini (for my daughter), $25 gift card for buying the mini, and got my 5% off for using the Target red card. Nice little Christmas gift for under $70.

I can confirm you don't have to buy anything on the spot. He handed me the $200 card and said have fun. When I told him I wanted a mini, he sent me to another sales rep since he had 3 people stacked up waiting to trade in their ipads...

What do you don't erase?

Don't erase until after they get the iPad model number off the device. Take the iPad in show them the model number from the settings menu, they do the paper work while they are doing the paper work erase the iPad

Do they sell tmobile/att/verizon iPads at Target stores?

I've looked and looked. They mostly carry Wi-Fi at the stores. They may rarely have a cellular model. You can buy cellular online, but guess what's the only model they have? That's right. Sprint.

==========
I have three (count 'em!) Macs and one first generation iPad. As it's only used by my Granddaughter (age 7) I am pretty much clueless on how to 'erase' all the content we purchased, yet save such for a new iPad. I haven't 'synched' this fellow for ages as, duh, it's system cannot be updated since it has such a weak chip.

So briefly, does anyone know how to 'reset' the iPad to it's stock content but minus the various 'apps' we purchased? And of course, be able to put those saved apps on a new iPad.

Since the first generation iPad is the bast###d at the family reunion and nobody wants them...I'd be A FOOL not to take the Target offer for $200 off on a new iPad!!

Just dropped off my 1st gen for the $200 card at Target on City Ave. in Philadelphia. The guy at the mobile station almost made me come back tomorrow because he was overtime. Said he'd be doing these all day long, and looked kind of harried. He ended up doing the exchange for me and gave me the card, which I'll use with the retina minis are out.

The iPad Air can use any of the other carriers nano SIM card (all the iPad cell versions are exactly the same except for the SIM card that is pre-installed). I'm not exactly sure how to go about getting a Verizon nano SIM card though if I get the Sprint version.

Multiple iPads

Can you trade in multiple old iPads, or is it just one trade in per customer?

Go to Settings, then General-->Reset-->Erase all content and settings.

Your apps are tied to your Apple ID so you'll be able to download them again. If you don't have an iCloud backup set up, I'd do that (settings-->iCloud-->Storage and Backup), then you can just restore from that when you get the new iPad.

Or just send it to Amazon and get more stuff for your money. They have being doing this for a long time. Amazon paid me more for my 3rd Gen iPad than Target would and I would rather shop at Amazon.

The whole reason everyone is jumping up and down about this offer is because Target's giving $200 for the original iPad. No one else is offering anything close.

I get that. But if you are trying to trade something more recent then there are better places than Target.

Barely for the iPad 2 or iPad Mini (both are listed at just under $200 on many trade in sites and you have to give them everything that came with the iPad). Also, you can just trade in the iPads by themselves I think without cables or charger, so you can keep those for your other iDevices.

I called a Target store, and they said you HAVE to use the $200 towards a new iPhone 5S. This is so misleading, it doesn't mention it anywhere on their http://targettradeinprogram.com website including the promotion and the small print. You can't use the credit for anything else.
You were misinformed. The person you spoke with clearly doesn't know much about this promotion.

I just came back from the target in Duarte, CA. The manager was back at the mobile section, and politely told me NO. He said that I could only trade it in towards the purchase of a new iPad Air (even showed me an ad), and that since they had none in stock, too bad. I showed him the website which doesn't say any such thing, and he told me I could leave his store and call customer relations. Yes he asked me to leave. WOW, last time I shop at Target. What a scam.

You were unlucky. I was there yesterday, and the guy who ran the kiosk was cool, all was done under 5 mins. He didn't ask me to buy anything.
I wanted ipad air wifi+lte, but the store doesn't carry it.

I traded in 4. The guy didn't bat an eye.

Go to a different store.

I was able to trade in my first gen iPad and get a iPad air 32 GB (the last air they had). Keep in mind their stock on airs is severely limited. The only color in store is white (for now anyways) and most of the base models have been picked over due to the extra $20 off sale on that model only.

Happy I got one but I really wanted the black, oh well, can't complain about a $200 discount.

Actually picked up a 64gb black today. If I were to believe Target.com, they only carry white in 16 and 32gb varieties. But lo and behold, a black 64gb (wifi only) when I walked in to my local target today to trade in my first gen iPad. Which yes, I got $200 for :D
