Can someone explain exactly what Apple's $3B acquisition of Beats was for? If Jimmy Iovine is supposed to be a music business genius we're not seeing it here. The Apple Music announcement was an unfocused, self indulgent mess and ever since has been a PR nightmare for Apple. How could Cue and Iovine not have all their i's dotted and t's crossed before they launched this thing?!?

He is without doubt one of the most influential people in the music business.

What became apparent at the keynote was that he just isn't that great a public speaker, or at least in an environment unfamiliar to him.

What about people who are now paying for spotify but when Apple Music drops, the’ll stop paying for spotify and enjoy 3 months of free trial. And also the people who might have wanted to buy a CD but now they will not because they can enjoy it free for 3 months. I think an artist might expect a dramatic drop in revenue because of this. Don’t you think?

And again, this is not about Taylor but about other, smaller artists. Imagine that there are regional offices of big labels in countries you might never heard of, which sign regional artists. Those artist, who might rely on revenue from streaming will can not only expect a drop in revenue, but also get screwed over by their label and there’s nothing they or the label’s regional office can do about it. They all can disagree, but they can’t do s*ite about it.

Let me ask you. Honest question. Why do care so much about artists you don't even know personally? Do you think they care if you spent your last dollar on their music? I doubt artists are really concerned if their fans go broke investing in their music because they still get paid while the fans go broke. After all they can't make money without the fans buying their music. It's funny how some people here care so much about the well being of artists that most likely don't give a damn about them.

Did you even try to read the second paragraph?

OK - but you did say "is better" rather than "I prefer".

Its all subjective, but I think there is great much in every genre.

I'm 44 and honestly think 1989 is one of the best pop albums I've ever heard. Pop is littered with great tracks, but truly great pop albums are fewer and further between.

I find her album 1989 very bland.

1989 was a great year for music, though.

Oh come on. Stop making excuses for Apple. They're sitting on an absurd pile of cash, yet they want artists to go without pay for 3 months? It's insulting.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of any of this may be, whether or not any company in Apple's position should pay this certainly isn't dependent on how much money they have in the bank.

1 cd costs 10 bucks, 1 Spotify or AM service month the same (hundreds of albums), is that fair? i disagree, they are almost giving away the music.

I´d say it is very fair. That is what the people think it is worth.

No more no less.

I'm encouraged to watch some in this younger generation taking a stand against the nonsense of corporate types. I could see the bigwigs at Apple laughing behind closed doors after they came to decide to screw the artists over their streaming music promotion scheme. How about when they decided, behind closed doors to charge hundreds and thousands of dollars more for each Apple Watch, they smirking while knowing the only difference between the highest and lowest cost model IS THE FREAKING WATCH BAND!

Miley Cyrus chickened out not writing an open letter to Tim Cook asking him to explain how does he reconcile setting up Apple Stores and selling computers in Islamist nations with legal systems that punish homosexuality with imprisonment, stoning, and death. No, she doesn't want to take Tim to the shed for that, but safely leading from behind and rallying her fans to bully Christians, Chic Fillet (sic) and cake bakers is hunky-dory and fun.

I digress. Miley is still just a kid.

My compliments to Taylor Swift. I'm impressed.

We simply come from different cultures, respect me.

Yeah mate i'm pretty sure respect wasn't the word you really wanted to use ( i can understand that because your main language is not english) you meant tolerate my point of view or something similar.

For the american spoken respect means admire, i'm pretty sure you were not asking for admiration.

Let’s say you have an app in AppStore and Apple decides it would be a great idea to have an AppStore subscription. But making apps is your day-to-day job and you rely on income from it. And you will not get paid for 3 months. That’s 1/4 of the year. Would you say it’s fine, because you already released the thing?

Good for you supporting a multi-billion company.
I always look at the near future reward. Not the immediate.

That's a bad analogy. Working for free for three months is not the same as letting people listen to something you have already recorded for free.

And what's with the repeated assumption that artists will see all of their revenue drop to zero anyway. Do artists not sell anything on iTunes, or sell any CDs, or get any revenue from paid streaming services, because there re free streaming options?

As far as I'm aware, yes they do.

not really

If someone sells candles or cookies or something like that for a living, that's like asking them to give away free product for three months. The product is "already" made , so the work is done but it's the same to expect them to give away the result of the work they already put in which they customarily are paid for.

I dont think the argument (from her standpoint) is that artists will see their revenue dropped to zero but rather their compensation will drop which is why she boycotted other free streaming services that didn't pay as well like Spotify.

Once again that's like asking someone who sells cookies " why not give me cookies for free, you'll still make money off other people."

Come back to the real world dude.

People don´t want to pay for an LP or CD, they want to stream their music, thats the real world today.

And the youngsters is well aware of this. This is the real world today, don´t look back at what was 20 years ago.

That's very likely, the language barrier makes it quite difficult to follow properly a discussion when it comes to these kind of nuances. Excuse me.

I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.

Miley is a kid and no one takes her seriously anyway.

Taylor, on the other hand, is way more mature when it comes to this. But still pretty annoying because she complains about too many things lately. I liked her better when she made music and fulfilled her role of being an artist instead of a social justice and music industry warrior. We have enough activists for the first out there.

These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.

Sure Taylor you respect Apple because of fear of being banned. You might admire them too but at the same time you are fear of them.

Be brave time to say Apple goodbye unless they rectify of course!

Geez, come on, pretty redicilous huh?

Music have a longer "best before" than cookies don´t you think?

Cookies doesn´t perform pretty well "live" either.

Writing the songs on your own album doesn't prove the artist is talented. High sales of an album the first week doesn't mean the album is any good either. When you have a continuing fan base of tween girls that crap sells regardless.

Maybe not, but that was in reply to a post which implied that the fact that she did not write her own songs was evidence that she was not talented.

But as it happens, a lot of the songs she rights are good, so I think its fair to describe her as talented.
