Agreed about confusion regarding the speaker grills. Aesthetically it would look nicer without them and there's seemingly no purpose for them being there.
I'm wondering if they somehow assist with heat dissipation or Wi-Fi/BT signal strength, but component placement on the MLB or cooling system doesn't seem to correspond with this.
Hopefully I'm wrong: it would be a shame if the grills did nothing!

This could be Apples stock design for Macbook Pros for at least the next 3-5 years. So maybe in future iterations they will utilize the grills?

There's no need to seal the holes. They already are sealed. They aren't drilled all the way through. They are unapologetically cosmetic.

Why in the world would Apple create speaker grills for no reason? One can quibble about aesthetic choices the company makes but it's rare that they do something for no reason. iFixit really wants us to believe the company chose to incorporate fake speaker grills (on both sides) for purely cosmetic reasons? That's absurd.
This is true, and that was what I was referring to as positive ones. If I would have posted that there has been no positive articles, there would be replies referencing the sales record articles.
Imo, even if the record launch sales are true, it could easily just be spin anyway.
True. But a story about how great the speakers sound on the 2016 MBP (as reported by many reviewers) would likely generate no more than 30 comments.
I agree with the look being better without the fake speaker grills. It looks cleaner. Someone up thread posted a 'shop with and without the grills. My thought is the grills are there so there's consistency to the look across the line up. As far as heat dissipation/WiFi/BT, I'm not really sure how the grills would help since they are closed. They seem to be purely aesthetic.

How so? The grills are closed. They aren't drilled through.

Probably some pretty good stuff now that weed is legal in California.
My gripe would be since there are no speakers under the grills, will those teeny tiny pockets start filling with dust, dirt and grime...impossible to clean out?
Where did you read that everyone has a problem with sound quality?
