"Stubborn"!!! I'd call it "practical". If one wants or needs newer features they buy a new device. Otherwise they keep what works...I'm getting a Red 256, btw. This is pretty much exactly the new phone I need - otherwise it's "Is that an iPhone 11 in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"
I was saying stubborn from Apples perspective. If you have an iPhone 3GS and it works for you, no problem in my book.

Different battery connector, huh? Can’t use those old parts. That would mean that people might (gasp) be able to replace it on their own. What is the size of the battery in the SE?
Perhaps the new connector is better and more reliable? Apparently they improved what they thought was necessary, the newer phones have the newer improved connector. Should they have used the older version?

It’s $399. Did you miss that part?

I love how people quote a number that doesn't include sales tax or is completely unreflective of the price overseas. €479 is no shabby price for a new phone, regardless if Apple has gaslit us to accept a €1000+ phone as normal pricing.

And given the effort that went behind this phone.. I'd expect it to cost even less.

Yes it did. Now it’s 4.7” 🤷‍♂️

It's not like it kept the same 5S body though. Now, THAT would have been an achievement.

Not surprised about these revelations; it makes sense they would have started with the 8 as a base and reworked a few things. This would be similar to a 'major minor' refresh in the automotive industry, like the 2019->2020 Honda CR-V.

Margins on this thing have to be pretty decent. Probably greater than they were on the 8.

In other words, the so-called SE is really a cost reduced iPhone 8. Why did you have to pollute the SE name, Apple? Why?
The new iPhone SE has largely the same internals as the iPhone 11. Is the iPhone 11 really a cost reduced iPhone 8? That wouldn't make sense to me. 🤔

It doesn't even have enough differences compared to the 8 to earn the "s" suffix.

This phone has "minimum effort" written all over it, but I'm sure there's gonna be a horde of Memoji-faced users prepared to pin it on us "hating" than Tim chilling and barely even trying anymore.
Are you at all familiar with the 2016 SE? Apple took an older model iPhone, then updated the SoC and rear camera. By using older parts/tech, Apple was able to price it at $399.

Same thing with the new SE. Apple updating to a newer cellular chip and adding WiFi 6 is a nice bonus.

For you the screen size was the determining factor but for Apple it was not. Besides, when the original iPhone SE with its size of 72.5 cm^2 came out, it was ~22% smaller than the flagship back then which was the 6s with 92.8 cm^2.

The new SE with its 93.1 cm^2 is about 19% smaller than the current flagship the 11 with its 114.2 cm^2 so it’s quite similar to the original SE in that regard.
The 11 Pro is a bit smaller (102.8) so the difference isn’t as big (just below 10%) but that’s a product line that wasn’t there back then and its smaller size is one of its features so it’s hard to compare that.

Smartphones getting bigger is just a trend that is there, wether you like it or not. The iPhone SE was and still is a model that is slowing it down but it’s not stopping it and there was never any indication that it would. Apple never explicitly specified its 4” screen or a specific phone size as a defining factor of the SE line.

I personally would have loved a smaller new SE as wel. I still wasn’t expecting it since it was clear they would again going to reuse existing production lines to keep the cost
low. Them using the iPhone 8 chassis was fully expected and in line with the idea behind the SE.
I've no idea cm measurements as they're not used in American, but the simple fact of the matter is that consumers EXPECT their SE to be 4" in size. The new 'SE' is too big for most. The drive to make iPhones the same as iPad telephones is just crazy. People don't want them and Apple is refusing to market to the original SE market with their hypocrisy. I simply refuse to buy another iPhone due to this. No way will Apple be stealing any of my money.

Apple followed a similar script when they updated the iPad Mini last year. Same old case, same old Touch ID button (not even the haptic sort), new A12 processor, Bluetooth 5, hugely better display, price started at $399. I preordered mine and I absolutely love it.

I’m looking forward to my iPhone SE.

I am. Also bought it as a present. Why do you claim ignorance for people who disagree with you?

Anyway. What Apple had accomplished with the 2016 SE, aside from component recycling, was to retain an ergonomically desirable small factor compared to the larger 6 gen. As a side matter, the 5s design wasn't so "tired" yet. Now, according to Apple and Apple-loving tech bloggers, the 6 size is "ideal" because the X-R-S gen is even bigger and people got used to it? It serves to show that the 2016 SE appeal as a smaller size handset was something serendipitous than planned.

Do you have any citations for the opinions couched as "facts".
- consumers expect t heir se to 4" in size
- The new SE is too big for most
- People don't want them

If you’re aware of how Apple made a $399 iPhone in 2016 by updating a 2.5 year old model with a new SoC and rear camera, how can you be so puzzled by the new SE? I don’t get it. Was the 2016 SE “barely trying”?

Yes. The 2016 SE was also barely trying. Even the chamfered edges lacked polish compared to the 5S. But it was a megahit as "the smaller phone" in comparison to the larger device that ended up to be the 2020 SE.

Who said I'm puzzled?

Things like sales tax and VAT are not really Apple’s responsibility. If it helps you feel better, those of us in the USA have an insanely overpriced health care system held hostage by the insurance industry and Republicans. So even though I pay no sales tax in my state, I more than make up for it in large health insurance premiums taken out of every paycheck, and large deductibles if I actually need to see a doctor.

I'm sure there may be others that would like to know if this is an opinion or fact on day 1 of release.

Let's call it iPhone 8S and call it a day. Apple could have increased top screen reducing top side thick bezel, giving new identity. But, why take risk ?

because the production costs would be much higher making an entirely new chasis, bumping up the cost to the same range as the XR/11 and who on earth would choose a “reduced bezel” design over one with none? it would be a total flop.

I am not going to go thru five pages of tedious blabbing pro-and-con on the attributes of the SE mark II relative to the classical mark I, but I must make a note of the brilliant side-by-side video published by the Chinese dude.

Just brilliant, contrasted to the unboxing by you-tubers on this side of the hemisphere.

[On an aside, just as a personal comment, I am rocking the SE mark I, and for my use case, I much prefer replacing its battery when time comes, rather than buying the undistinguished mark II.]

I guess your phone works differently than mine because I haven’t noticed a change since I got my first iPhone with force touch.

What a bizarre world we now live in, where people state their opinions as facts and actually believe that "most people" share their opinion. I would hold onto to your 1st gen SE as long as possible and maybe buy a backup. Most of the world has moved on from small phones and I doubt 4" cell phones will be making a comeback anytime soon.

If you refer to the chamfered edges, it was obvious at a glance.

If you refer to the "small size" positioning, it was indeed part of the keynote promotion and language.

The above is what is being questioned and how does one know the 2020 SE isn't/won't be a megahit?

We don't know that and I'm not making any predictions either. What I said is that the SE hit a sweet spot because of its size (and was marketed as such) whereas the flagship 6S at the time was considered too big. It wasn't just "the budget phone". But that's exactly what the 2020 SE is, the recycled budget phone that happens to be the size which was considered too big in 2016. And let's admit it, the 5(s) was a more svelte design compared to the 6. After 4 years and quite some following for the SE (5S) form factor, I reckon people expected a little more effort in that shape.

But long story short: I just don't know. I expect it to be successful for the merit of budget alone, especially during corona times. But let's not pretend it's the svelte small phone the original SE was.
