Sympathetic to it. I'd say the original 'Mac fans' have been left behind. I still miss the stability of some of the older OSX's. I trusted my Mac completely and now I really do not.

The nostalgia is silly. It just is. I’ve been running macOS in some form since 10.3 (and don’t tell me it was some kind of rock solid system before that). There have been decidedly solid releases (10.6, 10.14) and decidedly not-so-solid (10.7, 10.10). I actually came from Linux as it’d already become quite clear in 2001 that Windows was not the answer for web development.

Still running 10.14 due to some issues with 10.15. Okay. My 2016 MBP has a crappy keyboard that’s been replaced. That’s annoying. However that aside, the machine has ferried me through another three years of code and overall it’s been the same pleasure to use as I am used to. The OS is stable with quirks (like, you know, everything in computing). I still prefer the laptops by a wide margin to anything else out there.

There have been duds before now. There have been bad releases before now. There will be solid releases in the future. There will likely be more duds too. These problems even existed during Jobs’ reign. I find most people who talk about Macs like we’ve left a golden age are nostalgic for a time that simply never actually existed. (Some of that has to do with a time before the proliferation of tech news sites that make every flaw viral when the vast majority of users—except in the most serious cases—would never know. This leads to throngs of armchair software and hardware engineers asking, “Where’s the QA?” like it was a some simple oversight.)

You either got lucky through your Mac-using history or y’all are cherry-picking your memories. 10.7 was way messier than Catalina, and it followed what was (for me) the most stable release I’ve used to date (although 10.13 and 10.14 in particular have been excellent).

Anyway...

I do think the kind of high end pros that this new machine is aimed at have been legitimately neglected by Apple. I’m not sure if it was design arrogance (i.e. they’ll use what we give them no matter what) or industry arrogance (i.e. we sell so many iPhones, who needs this niche?) but it appears to be going away as evidenced by the change in focus of the Mac Mini, the iMac Pro, a backpedal on the MacBook Pro, and now this hardware which, if you NEED it, you can afford it.

And this Mac Pro is aimed at an even higher end Pro than earlier iterations, which I find to be particularly interesting. If you were the person aiming for the bottom end of the Mac Pro 10 years ago, it seems like the attitude is, “use something else.” And I don’t think that’s unreasonable. Laptops and Minis can do a lot of work and handle a lot of expansion with Thunderbolt. I have really enjoyed what an eGPU brings to my laptop.

(Totally aside, can anyone tell me who exactly the base Mac Pro is aimed at? That machine seems to exist purely to say they sell a pro machine for cheaper than 8K, haha.)

The problem I'm having is whether to purchase a banana duct'ed tape to a white wall or two maxed out Mac Pros with 2 XDR monitors. Hmm...

I read a suggestion that it's for people who need the processing grunt, but use networked storage so they don't need much more than 256GB. To be honest if my company would stump up the $$$, I'd love one for my dev work.

Though, TBH, I'd prefer an 8core 16" MBP with 32GB RAM, base GPU and 1TB SSD and the XDR Pro Display.
The 16" can drive the display and is more portable than the MacPro.

I mean, if you got a 6k budget for the computer, there must be an equal budget for the display....

Apple has sent the machines to their favorite fashion youtubers. Maybe it would be better if they thought about real PRO? I am a PRO, but I don't have to look pretty on film and never buy this equipment, because it's 5 times too expensive.
All this halo marketing talk is stupid. If a few pros were sent review units all they have to do is let the usual blogs know. Like this one? And then other media pick up. I’d have never heard of these YouTube reviews otherwise. Their joke followers are insignificant.

So what real benefit does Apple get here other than causing confusion or annoyance? Most here don’t like it. That’s a nice feeling to foster. Bravo Apple. You even have a few in this forum that think these you tubers have some kind of value.

Maybe companies should do this more. Send the YouTube guys who have no clue your product to review. We need to see what iJustine has to say about it. Lol. Maybe Apple should just send her atv+ shows in advance to preview.

It's crazy that people thing YouTubers are not real pro's. They make their entire living through Final Cut Pro. That sounds like a PRO. She used three 8k red camera's for her video, that sounds like a PRO. Her video already had 600k views, that sounds like a PRO. It's estimated iJustine makes 600k per year, that sounds like a PRO.

Yet, you think apple should just let this site talk about it? Macrumors last youtube video has 10k views. Hah, hah, hah.

A few of reasons people hate Apple YouTubers:

1) Apple haters can't stand to hear someone say something positive about Apple's products. I see many BIG YouTubers review Lenovo and Dell products with barely any criticism and the comments are all positive. Lenovo Thinkpads and Dell XPS machines have a multitude of problems, but because they are not Apple high praise and hiding problems are acceptable to viewers.

2) Apple haters want more Apple trashing from big YouTubers like Unbox Therapy and Linus Tech Tips. Both these YouTubers trash Apple in order to get clicks and I have zero respect for them because they are not objective, but Apple haters love them because they don't give any credit to Apple's products where it's due. If Apple's products were worthy of so much trashing the company and it's products wouldn't be so popular.

3) Lastly, because Apple has grown to be one of the largest companies world wide Apple haters get mad at any praise for products made by a company so big that has become also the most popular company worldwide. Even someone's super-aging grandmother has heard of Apple and the iPhone. Can't say the same about Samsung's Galaxy phones.

Or 4, because many of them like iJustine and cringy to even listen to; like her audience is 15 year old high school girls. A lot of Apple Youtuber cater to Apple's biggest audience- teens/college age.

MANY pro-Apple Youtubers are good like Jonathan Morrison and MKBHD. There is nothing wrong with not liking who rubs you the wrong way or is cringy to listen to.

Linus is cringy to listen to but I also credit he's a really smart guy. Ive been using computers since a Tandy 1000 in the 80s and he knows miles more than me about PCs. I do actually learn stuff from him despite being annoying as hell.

And phone case design-stealing fake iphone giveway Unbox Lew, let's not even go there. That guy shouldnt be allowed to be on Youtube after how scammy he is. If I have to hear him yell "you know, no you dont know!" one more time I swear. The poor people that have to tolerate to work for him.

Oh yeah, with my own money, I plumped for the 16" already. I feel like that display is too much screen even for me.

How many of those subscribers are interested in buying a $6,000 desktop computer?

Probably not many, but even if 0.00001% of those subscribers buy this machine Apple will have made their money back on giving her a free computer (if she even gets to keep it). Plus, it's additional advertising.

Wow she surely put that Mac Pro to good use! Can there even BE more useless Apple youtuber?
From a technical point of view, not considering contents, she is very competent.

Un, why did Apple seed iJustine a review unit?
Because she is quite a good marketing media, with millions of follower. And she is a competent video editor.

Yeah, youtubers are amateurs compared to the kind of "professionals" these units are designed for. This is meant to live in the kind of studio where a single microphone, or the monitor speakers, can cost as much as this machine does.
This kind of youtubers aren’t amateurs. Not at all. If you look at iJustine “studio” you can see thousands of dollars of equipments and an entire equipe of workers.

full reviews should be conducted by professionals who use these kind of hardware and demand every bit from these computers. When you do things like that, then the price is not that high.

I have to take issue with this. These youtubers are literally editing terabytes of raw 8k footage constantly and producing hours of content every week. Who do you know that has a more demanding workflow than that? Is it the MOST demanding? No. But i'd venture a guess that it's in the top 5%. They give you benchmarks, real feedback on how it is to use the machine and you get to see it in action. That's more than Macworld used to give when they were still producing magazines.

Looks nice, could I afford one? Yes. Will I buy one? Nope. It just looks so expensive to repair and only possible by Apple that I could not face it when it goes wrong, I think it would given my experience of Apple products in the last couple of years.
You said you can afford one and then contradicted yourself being worried about repair costs...
And you didn’t answer the only meaningful question: did I need it ?

You said you can afford one and then contradicted yourself being worried about repair costs...

Well if you read again I was clear, I am worried about repair costs as I do expect it to break and Apple with their ways will force me to pay $1k to fix something any other competent repair shop would charge $200 for.

Paying $5k for a device from a company that has been full of nothing but letdowns in the last few years does not appeal.

Do I need it? No. But, could I use it and benefit from it? Yes.

C'mon, where's your sense of humor? You can't possibly compare that video to serious unboxing videos. Her overblown reactions and the things she obsesses over (like subtle color differences) are hilarious. She unintentionally comes close to satirizing the entire unboxing genre.

So smaller simulations by financial fringe group.

I reckon Goldman-Sachs has $, but there are cheaper options for that purpose. I suppose all PCI ports and other expandability options will go unused in this case.

Depends how small things are, some financial models are quite complex. In this case, yes, the expandability will be unused. It's a Pro machine, but doesn't fit entirely into what I need from it, however, an iMac Pro isn't stellar either nor does it support ECC.

I've got nothing against YouTubers doing their thing. It's not my thing.

I even understand why Apple would use this avenue to introduce their new halo product… sort of.

What I don't understand - and never have - is the whole "unboxing" drama. It's like sitting around watching someone open their mail.

When I stopped watching iJustine's video: The moment she got all squishy about the monitor stand packaging.

Unboxing is basically wish fullfillment for viewers. I'm never going to be able to afford the Mac Pro, nor do I need one. But it's cool to see what the experience of opening one is like. Apple's packaging is often a work of art in and of itself, and the Mac Pro box certainly showed that. It's interesting for viewers to see the packaging. It lets them feel like they have some ownership in the product even though they don't have one. They know what it's like to open one, they relate to that.

In the other thread some people told me these are review units that they do not keep, however I don't think that's the case. Anyway, I think this device in particular should be reviewed by actual pros, people who work in the film, music industries, etc.
Most of you are under the wrong impression those are amateurs. They are not.

She's on Tim's payroll most likely so, no.
And you clearly have proofs for your accusation, right?

MKBHD and iJustine, two Youtubers who have more money than brains. Is this what millennials do for a living? Wow.
Millennials? Justine Ezarik was born in 1984...

she won several prizes in the past ten years. What’s exactly your curriculum?

I'm in the same boat, and same age range.

I am building my first PC ever, a 32 Core threadripper machine (I frustratingly have all the parts except the CPU which is back ordered until God knows when) but with a 32 Core 3.7GHz, 128 GB RAM, RTX 2080ti plus cooler, PSU, case, Windows OS etc, I am at about $5500.

The closest I could price the new Mac Pro to that was $16,000, and that Mac Pro had "only" 28 cores at 2.7GHz and 96GB RAM. (No, I don't have ECC RAM but please, if you are already formulating your defense of Apple PLEASE please please stop. I'm animating, not trying to run cancer simulations. And neither is anyone buying this machine).

There is no way that $16,000 Mac Pro will perform 3x faster than my machine, and odds are it will be equal or slower in most respects.

I'm not saying the $60,000 version won't be nice, but seriously.
I can add 3 more RTX 2080Ti's for Redshift Rendering and still be $7000 under, with insane performance.

This machine is insulting to most pros, and shows Apple to be the elitist company most PC users always thought it was, and this seriously hurts to say as I am so into Apple it hurts.

Please don't hurt me.
I stop reading at “Windows OS”...

All of your reasons are bunk. YouTubers and all the other "influencers" are just a fancy term for "Paid Shill" or "Freeloader". Don't care what some vapid self proclaimed "Expert" has to say on YouTube. And that goes for all products. Be it Apple, Lenovo, or a POS Dell, car, camera, tool, whatever.

Most of the YT videos on all subjects are cringeworthy and not worth much.

It's the same thing with BS like Twitch and whatever the new one is. Watch someone play a videogame? Really? I'd rather watch paint dry.
