Tempermental iPhone 4 home button 4.1

First two of my serial # ? 5K...

Same as mine and I'm glad the Genius says they are not refurbs even though many people in the Net thinks they are.

My replacement phone worked very well so for that I'm thankful.

I'm pretty sure it's software at this point. My friend's iPad (running 4.2) did it to me this weekend two different times. Once it didn't register a single click, and once it took a double click as a single click. My phone seems to do it the most after running e mail, Cut the Rope, the Facebook app, and Tweetdeck. It also does it right after waking up from sleep.

I took my phone in to the Genius Bar on Thursday and of course, they couldn't reproduce the issue and told me that pushing the home button is "all about timing". The Genius went back and blew some compressed air on my home button. I noticed when I got home from the store that whatever he used to get the back off of my phone nicked my antenna band. I was pretty pissed about that, but it's a very tiny nick and I was actually able to hide it with a really really really light application of silver Tester's paint and a toothpick. (I don't recommend this method for large scratches, as it doesn't quite match the finish on the antenna band).

Anyway, I guess now it's just a matter of seeing what happens in the new update. It made me feel a little better after seeing the iPad do it. I think there are probably a lot of people having this problem, but a lot of them probably aren't noticing it as much.

I have my suspicions of it being software too.

Why doesn't this happen to everyone? Probably has to do with a certain app that's open or something, I don't know. Or maybe a flaw in 4.1/4.2.1.

People with SHSH blobs and 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2 on file should roll it back and see if it still does it (stock). I don't remember it ever happening with 4.0 or 4.0.1 (had both, skipped 4.0.2) or 4.1 until a month or two after using it. I can't roll back though. Too much custom stuff on my phone to bother.

Anyways, the fact this thread is so huge leads me to believe its not just my unit.

Also, sometimes hititng the home button it almost doesn't wake from sleep (takes longer to show than others). There's no rhyme or reason to it overall.

Another guy is swapping another one for the same problem. Not worth chancing it to lose jailbreak and unlock to swap the unit.

yeah mine is bit laggy sometimes 1 push on the home button takes me to mulititask menu 2 push sometimes exits the app.. its getting anoying i dont remember having this problem in 4.0:confused:

i still reckon it's the facebook app that's causing it.

If it were Facebook app, it would affect millions of iPhone users! Not just a few :)

Come on guys, it is a hardware issue. Go for a replacement. I did mine and the problem was fixed!

in that case i can only speak for myself.
the last fb app update fixed it for me. no more issues. maybe i got lucky then.

Don't want to. Not with my unlockable baseband and 4.1 already jailbroken and customized to perfection.

The unlock waiting game will be forever for the 4.1/4.2.1 basebands I would imagine.

Final version of 4.2.1 jailbreak, though, is probably just around the corner.

1.59.00 unlockable baseband is something I want to hold onto. I used it for 4 months in Europe, but now I don't really need an unlock for any reason except it helps out the resell value a ton in case I want iPhone 5 (had every iPhone, really happy with this one overall. It'll have to be substantial to make it worth it).

It would be nice if this rumour materializes, what with all the frustrations we've all had with temperamental home buttons.

Mine acts up, too, but I fear if I take it to the Apple Store, given that it's an intermittent problem, that they will tell me it's fine. Store is an hour drive. What are the odds I get an exchange?

I don't know about you, but in my area, they will do nothing about it. I've been in to the Apple store twice with this issue and haven't been able to get it to happen in front of them. On my phone, once it starts doing it, it does it for the rest of the day until I reset it. Or some days it won't do it at all.

All that aside, they've come right out and told me that they will not replace my phone for this issue. If it is hardware, I'm screwed until the home button just stops working completely. At this point I'm almost hoping I just get a dead pixel or two so I can take it in and say, Ok, now exchange it. This is a very annoying issue. If it's software related or can be fixed with software, I really wish Apple would just acknowledge it and fix it. It's very very annoying. It only seems to happen to me right after exiting an app, so I'm fairly certain it's software, but who knows.

my home button has been acting up for several months now and the button was sucken in a bit towards the bottom and thats the area when pressed would cause the button to acted up. so today i went to the apple store to get it replace and the guy tried to reproduce it but couldnt and once he gave it back to me i was able to do it right away. i told him that it happens in the certain areas and he told me to stop pressing there and press it normal and that he sees nothings wrong with it. at this point he was getting annoyed but i still was able to get it replaced.

Trying to find a correlation between serial numbers / week builds and defects is 999 out of 1000 times USELESS.
That's not the intent of my post. I'm just trying to find out if he is getting a refurb - and based on the serial, it is likely one.

I just signed up to say this:

My iPhone 4 was doing the same thing with the temperamental home button and of course I couldn't get it to happen in front of the genius, but he felt like I was telling the truth and replaced it anyway.

It's NOT a software issue because my replacement phone does not do it.

Let me also point out that I restored my old iPhone 4 numerous times and that didn't fix it.

When I got home with my brand new replacement iPhone, I restored it to my old backup (from my previous iPhone 4) and the home button is still working every time.

Dot wait for a software fix, because it's probably not going to happen. Take it to Apple and get it exchanged. This will let Apple know that there's a problem. Sitting around waiting for a fix won't solve it.

I'm very happy with my replacement iPhone. Well done Apple. You never let me down (twice). No company is perfect but Apple is very nice about solving customers' issues.

On the other hand to MobsterSauce, I've been at 4.1 for a while now and decided to finally try the untethered 4.2.1 jb.

I was really suffering with the home button problem on 4.1. Been on 4.2.1 two days now and I can't say I've ever noticed the home button playing up since I upgraded.

Hey guys, having the same problem here. Home button has become wonky over the past 1-2 weeks, occasionally registering single clicks as double clicks, and vice versa. Has been happening more frequently as of late, about 6-8 times in the past hour.

Called up AppleCare and they redirected me to my mobile service provider, since we don't have an Apple Store locally. I've yet to make an appointment though. I've tried blowing the dock connector port and using a small brush to sweep out any dirt inside, but it hasn't really helped.

One question though: if I exchange my iPhone for a new one, and I resync my new iPhone with my computer, I know I'll restore all my apps and messages and the like, but will I retain all my in-app save games? Have spent ages completing Angry Birds and to lose all that data would be a bummer! Sadly, that's what's keeping me from trading my phone in, haha.

On a 32GB iPhone 4, non-jailbroken, purchased August 2010, if that helps!
