I upgraded from a series 3 to a series 5 and the battery life is awful, I have no idea why??? You would think that newer technology would be better, my series 3 had a much better battery life.

Is there a setting I possibly have on that I shouldn't that is draining my battery?

I was unprepared for the dramatic reduction in battery life for my phone. I have an iPhone 7. The phone usually ends the day with 70-75% charge. Yesterday it ended at about 35%.

i suggest you both look at the Background App Refresh options on your watches. In earlier versions of wOS only items in your Dock or active complications had background refresh active. Now, all apps have it by default. Trim the list down to only apps you will use regularly.

I just got an S5 on Sunday. Battery life on the watch yesterday saw it 15 hours off the charger and it ended with 23%. I understand that should get better over the next couple of days. But I was unprepared for the dramatic reduction in battery life for my phone. I have an iPhone 7. The phone usually ends the day with 70-75% charge. Yesterday it ended at about 35%. Will that get better in coming days, too? Because I really need the phone. The watch is just a fun device. But if the watch is going to kill my phone then I'll have to return it. That simply won't do.

The phone will need to upload a bunch of apps to the watch on day one. Give it a couple of days and everything should settle down.

An update..
Took watch off charger around 7AM yesterday. After a 30 minute indoor ride this morning (using HRM of AW) I had about 45% remaining at 7AM. Not bad at all IMO.

AOD on
Background refresh on for most things. I turned it back on and disabled the few that aren’t really needed.
Raise to Wake disabled except for 30 minute ride this morning.
Theater Mode while in bed/sleeping (about 7 hours)

WatchOS 6.0.1
iOS 13.1.2

Background app refresh is intelligent and stops doing it for things you don’t use. Just give it a few days.

Aw3 was the best battery life so far. The 4 was less and the 5 is even less so. Still a full day though.

What does worry me somewhat is constantly draining the battery down to that 30-40% level every day. In the long run, it will impact the long term life of the battery with these deeper cycles of discharge and recharging. Is that a concern? For me probably not again as I'll upgrade to a series 6 or 7 or something, long before I have to worry about long term battery issues...

That's a good point. I have not let the watch battery go all the way down (e.g. 10%) and then charged back to 100%. Should I? I have been putting my watch on the charger at about 40% in the evening to charge back up to 100% before sleeping. Is this harming the battery?

I'm still on 5.3.2, since 6 isn't out yet for S2, so it seems like it's not specific to the OS version. My usage time is reporting as the entire time it's off a charger, which suggests something is constantly running and chewing up battery. No idea what though, as I've even power cycled the watch to ensure any weird processes have definitely ended, but no change to usage or rate of battery drain.
I created a new watch face using only apple complications/apps and set it as the active face last night. Today after wearing the watch about 5 hours, i'm still at 88%. I'm not sure if one of the third party app complications I was using was an issue (none of those apps had updates in the past week). Or... I see people commenting that the podcasts app has been causing problem. I don't use the app on my watch but I did subscribe to a few new podcasts yesterday when i had the battery issue. none of them should have synced to the watch given my settings, but I'm wondering if this change in the phone podcasts app caused some weirdness in the watch app. I had gone a couple days without listening to podcasts prior to my issue with short battery life, and i dont think i've subscribed to new podcasts since updating the phone and watch to ios 13 / watchos 6

So far on my S5 44mm using 6.1 beta 3 battery life seems very good so far.

AOD on
Background app refresh on for everything
Noise app off
Raise to wake on
Brightness halfway on the iPhone app or 2 bars in the watch settings

So far 2hrs usage, 1 day 6hrs standby and I still have 35% left to go :)

Do not disturb is turned on in this shot but I only turned it on 1hr ago, have had quite a few notifications and texts through since taking it of the charger.

Well, I tried resetting my watch from scratch last night. Battery usage back to normal immediately after, and still when I put it on this morning. At least, until I left for work, and it started draining quickly again.

I've just stuck it in Airplane Mode and it seems to have arrested the drain, which suggests to me there's some kind of process that keeps running in the background constantly using bluetooth or wifi. Now Playing complication/screen possibly, since the only change after leaving for work was playing music from my iPhone? Could the bug be on the iPhones side introduced with 13.1.2?

Apps with complications on the current watch face will continue to refresh, even when their background app refresh setting is off. This is why I set my current watch face to Meridian with no complications, I can always swipe to another watch face if I need to see complications - I have 5 watch faces for various needs. After 10 hours my AW S4 is usually around 80% battery. No apps installed other than the ones that shipped with the watch.

I wonder what is classified as “Usage”. That is a very low number for the total number of hours you used the watch. Mine reaches 2 hours in about 5 or 6 total hours and that is with barely using any apps (if any)...

I did wonder the same thing, and set up a face with no complications, but it didn’t make any difference on my watch. My normal face doesn’t use any 3rd party complications though (just activity, weather, date, and now playing).

That actually seems pretty great to have been off the cahrger for nearly a day and a half.

I have the exact same problem. The only app i use consistently is the "Now Playing". And I cannot get through the day without having to charge my watch in the middle of the day. I am usually less than 50% after about 6 hours of wearing my watch. I need to charge it for an additional hour in order to make it through the day.

BTW, I have the Watch Series 5. And I have been talking with Apple Support since I got the watch and talked with several different Senior Specialists there. While they tried to be helpful, none of them offered a definitive solution that actually worked. On multiple occasions I was told just to exchange it for another one as the battery was defective. I assured the rep that the battery is fine. it is a software issue, not a hardware one. A bit discouraging having to tell Apple about how to tell the difference.

My series 5 battery life is now back on par with my previous series 4, but took about two weeks to get there.

So that’s 5% an hour. Better then what you had previously had .
Mine is on its second day of losing 2.5% an hour which is almost par with my S4 so AOD isn’t costing too much. Hopefully even better when 6.1 is released

Well my replacement is coming next Tuesday still deciding if to keep it or cancel. Thought might as well keep and send this one back to see the differences

As long as it lasts me til 23.00 at least I’m all good

I found no difference with AOD on or off personally. Raise to wake off isn’t huge difference either and I rather not switch things off as goes against the point of getting it really

Let’s hope your repl is better. Run it through a few charge cycles so it can optimise
