thanks for your answer. so would you recommend me installing the jailbreak onto my iphone or jsut using the apps apple already has? is it worth the trouble?

If you want to have extra capabilites like tethering or playing old NES, Play Station or Sega genesis games, or customize your phone (color and display wise) to your liking, then yes, jailbreak.

Else, if you don't mind those features, then jailbreaking won't do much and will be more of a hassle than good.

Thanks a lot for great tutorials! Really helpful!

You are welcome :)

yeah... I guess I am just kind of nervous about the whole jailbreaking thing. I have heard about how the phones can brick up and that really scares me.

help again!

I'm trying to find a decent set of instructions to use to jailbreak my phone. I have firmware 2.1 already, i just can't seem to find what to do next? any help?

Like I said before. iClarified has a nice set of instructions, which by the way, include pictures. I have links for them in the respective descriptions of tools used for jailbreaking. Give 'em a look.:)

Sim Card?

I have followed the steps precisely.... And still it says that my SIM card is no authorized. Would anyone be able to lend some support? Do I go through the process with my TMOBILE card in the phone?

Your help is well appreciated!

JEFF

Which iPhone firmware do you have (I assume since you went through the unlocking, you have the 1st Gen iPhone)? Try rebooting the phone. If that does not work, please tell me what steps you did exactly to see where your problem is.

Yes, its best in my opinion to unlock with the SIM card from a different carrier.

Amazing post. I will be buying a iphone after macworld 09. Thanks for the post. It cleared up a lot of questions I had.

Way too much to read through. Quick and simple question for someone to answer...

A friend of mine currently has an iPhone with the 1.0 firmware on it that was unlocked using the first GeoHot method back in the day (the testpoint unlock). Can I restore this iPhone to the 2.2 firmware, activated, unlocked, and jailbroken with PwnageTool?

Thanks.

WOW! 1.0.0 firmware? I don't think there was an iPhone with 1.0.0 out there anymore.

Ok, that aside. Yes, just restore all the way with a custom made .ipsw using Pwnage. Be sure let him know to back up all his contacts and stuff first.

Yeah, he's the type of guy that won't do anything unless he's absolutely sure something won't break (i.e., consult with me first). I'll be sure to have him back everything up first - a quick sync should suffice. Thanks!

echomac

Aloha,

I jailbroke my 2.28 and worked fine for awhile. I need guide to activate files? I downloaded echomac 16.1 into library download then it would say open with. I tired all programs from cydia , installer to safari and nothing happened. Then I tired to get your hacher file and it froze up. So I did a restore. What is the chose at the first of your quickpwn when it asks who you are? Grapics, hacker etc. what should I choose?? Just need help on how to run the jailbreak??? Mahalo, ahiman:confused:

That list it not up to date. The iPhone has been released in a lot more countries - Denmark for one.

Read carefully, the last line says the iPhone is available in more countries and there is even a link to Apple's site where all official countries are listed.

On a side note, the FAQs and Guides sections were updated to include the new information about yellosn0w (iPhone 3G's soft unlock).

I got my iphone from one of those "not" authorized stores that unlocked the iphone so it can be used for t-mobile.

My iphone has 1.1.3 version and I want to update it to 2.2 or at least 2.0. I cannot normally update thru itunes because it will freeze. The seller wanted to charge me $50 dollars to update it. What do I need to do to update it to 2.2 myself?

Also, the sim card tray will not open. I've tried the paper clip any which way and it does not want to open. Is it possible for the seller to have locked the sim card tray? Can I open the sim card tray another way?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Don't let your seller update it. Use iTunes, just try a different computer.

Already Unlocked!!

Hi Jav.. thanks for all the info posted here,,,GREAT job...
I have a question on my 3G (2.0.2 (5C1)).
It was bought unlocked (I dont know what was used to unlock!!) and the phone is working fine.
I want to sync my itunes (i have 8.0 on my mac) to the phone but have not really tried connecting to my mac yet because of the confusion.
1)What precautions should I take while I connect to itunes (I am not that keen to j/b and install non-App store apps.)? just want to sync!
2) What do you mean by activation in my case when a phone is already unlocked and is being used with a service provider!
3) Should I switch off the automatic s/w updates option in itunes when i connect?
thanks for your help man.

Connecting the phone up to iTunes won't do a thing. Unless you click update or restore.

Activation problems you won't have as the phone is already activated.

iTunes doesn't update your phone by force when you connect it. You have to manually do it, so don't worry about loosing anything. (unless you misclick)

======

However, all that aside. I highly recommend that you update all the way to 2.2.0 software using Pwnage and have updated to the latest baseband. Then use yellosn0w to unlock. All details are in the first page and links to the guides also.

Hope it helps and sorry for delay.

Hi Jav,

Great thread you've started here. Tonnes of very useful information.

I wanted to ask you a question to clarify Warranty information after using the yellowsn0w soft unlock.

I understand the notion that once you start tampering with the software, the warranty is officially void. But with that being said, is there a way to "un-unlock" your phone later on, if it happens to need servicing?

That is, it appears that for jailbreaking, the easy solution is to restore to original settings to get back to the "original iphone state". Is this same solution possible after you use the soft-unlock, so that you can continue to get service on your iphone if you need it?

From the iclarified instructions on yellowsn0w installation, it appears that this is the case, but i'm not 100% sure:

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/comments.php?page=9&enid=2538#commentsanchor

***IMPORTANT: For those having trouble. The yellowsn0w application can simply be uninstalled. If you have tried all the hints and suggestions and still have problems just use Cydia to remove the package and then reboot. You will then have service with your locked carrier as always.

Can you help clarify?

Thanks!

Jav ...Thanks a lot. :D
Someone told me that since my phone is already unlocked...it is already jailbroken! I have no idea what was used to jailbreak since it was already unlocked when i bought it. How do you know or check if you can install Non-App store apps in my case?
Thanks again....

Well to have your warranty validated (and no proof you jailbroke/unlocked) all you have to do is use iTunes to install a stock .ipsw from Apple and you are set! If you bring the phone back to its original state, you will loose and jailbreak or unlock status you previously achieved.

Just look for an application called Cydia. Its a brown icon. If you have it, then you can have non-App Store apps in there. Also the application called Installer (Blueish) does the same thing as Cydia.

Either one of those gives you the power to use non-App store apps.
