OK, first of all, congrats on a fantastic thread. Muchos kudos and hats off to you.

I have one or two questions though;

Cheers,
Brian.

And here are some answers:

My iPhone is a week 43 unit. This will have the 3.9 bootloader, right?
I. Yup your Bootloader is 3.9

What does this mean in real terms?
II. You can downgrade your baseband if you'd like

My phone is about 4 months old now, running 1.1.4 but otherwise out of the box condition. Should I jailbreak and unlock all in one go?
III. You can jailbreak if you want the applications, but unlocking is for those who want to use the iPhone in other carriers. If those are your intentions, then go ahead and unlock.

Lets say I want to upgrade to 1.1.5 or v2.0, will this be possible?
IV. Upgrading to 1.1.5 or 1.2.0 is not possible right now because such firmwares do not exist. If they were to exist and you upgraded by mistake, you can go back down to 1.1.4

Will I need to restore it first and then upgrade, and then repeat the jailbreak and unlock procedures once again?
V. When ever you upgrade or restore your iPhone you always have to jailbreak again. Unlocking is different, you see, if the unlocking solution is permanent then you only have to unlock once; however, if it is a solution like anySIM, then you have to unlock every time you upgrade/restore.

Or would my phone become bricked in this situation?
VI. Your iPhone can't be bricked if you do not intentionaly want to make it a brick.

IN short would I be stuck with 1.1.4 forever?
VII. You would be stuck forever in 1.1.4 if you decide to, only you can decide which firmware you want.

Thank you for you help, I have jailbroken and unlocked the phone. It has brought a whole new level of functionality to my iPhone.

Cheers for your help and patience!

Brian.

I'm getting a refurbished Iphone and I have noticed some people are saying they're getting firmware 1.1.1. So am i able to use Ziphone, click do it all, and then have it upgraded all the way to 1.1.4?

Finally, great guide!

No. First you have to update all the way to 1.1.4 [that is if you want 1.1.4], then use Pwnage.

Note: You can't use 1.1.1 on your iPhone and still unlock, unless with another tool.

Edit: I have added for everyone the first Neat Trick to this guide. It is about changing icons for the Installer icon to the App Store icon. Check it out on Post 3 in this guide

so is it possible to unlock in bootloader 4.6 or which is better and safe
i have bootloader 4.6

No. First you have to update all the way to 1.1.4 [that is if you want 1.1.4], then use ZiPhone with the option "Do it All" if you are planning to use it outside AT&T or another official carrier.

Note: You can still use 1.1.1 on your iPhone and still unlock.

So then I should restore to 1.1.4 first via Itunes and then run Ziphone. Correct?

Bootloader 4.6 is unlockable. Just follow the guide you want to follow. I have 2 guides for unlocking in case you want to keep your 4.6 Bootloader or want to go down to 3.9 Bootloader.

So then I should restore to 1.1.4 first via Itunes and then run Ziphone. Correct?

If you want firmware 1.1.4 in your iPhone, then yes Update or Restore to 1.1.4. After that, use Pwnage/WinPwn.

Questions? Please post

Hey.. I just want to confirm before I do this.

I bought an iPhone 16GB today. It's still sealed in its box. I want to use my own contract SIM in it.

So.. I've understood from this guide that all I need to do is connect to my MacBook (running 10.5.2, iTunes v7.6.1, if that's relevant) via USB, quite iTunes, run ZiPhone 2.6b for OSX, click 'Do it all!', click 'Start Process', and just wait for 4-5 minutes while it does the business?

And after that's done I'll be able to use any SIM, and be able to install 3rd party apps?

Sorry for being a n00b.

Still wet behind the ears, plz bare with me

First of all, I greatly appreciate you and people like you who take the time out to help the rest of the community who may not be as knowledgeable about the technical aspects but still want to get maximum performance out of their iphone. If we all stepped outside ourselves to help each other out more often this world would be a much better place. The guide looks clear and simple to follow. Being the newb that I am however (and broke as **** student) , I just want to double and triple check that I won't end up bricking my iphone without being able to fix it. Two questions: 1) I have a 16gb 1.1.4 iphone already activated on AT&T, all I need to do is follow your instructions for jailbreaking and I should then be able to install these 3rd party apps? (do not need to worry about any of that stuff about bootloader b/c I do not need to unlock?) 2) If I jailbreak (either successfully or unsuccessfully) will I be able to restore to factory settings keeping my warranty intact? I'm all for coloring outside the lines esp with a toy as fun as the iphone but $500 is a lot of money to me and I want to make sure I can maintain my apple coverage so if anything goes wrong I can still take it into apple and my warrany will not be voided. Thanks again for this post, can't tell you how much I appreciate you.

Don't worry. I understand your concern. I am also as broke as a student [mainly because I am one] and do not wish for my iPhone [nor anyone else's] to become brick.

However, the new Pwnage tool is safe and easy to use.

jav6454, would I be right in assuming my 16GB iPhone already has 1.1.4? Like I said, it's still sealed, so obviously it hasn't been activated or anything. When I unlock it'll be straight out of the box.

And if so, would I need to restore before using ZiPhone?

Thanks for your help.

Thank you so much

Thanks a lot my friend, you've been a great help. One more minor question, I've heard unlocking disables visual voicemail due to something with AT&T, is this the case with jailbrekaing as well?

Ok, you going with T-Mobile or AT&T. It matters cause if you are already AT&T you don't need to unlock.

I am having trouble understanding the Unlocking part of this guide. I already jailbreaked my iPhone thanks to this guide. I just want to unlock my iPhone, but I still want to be using AT&T. I want to unlock because I travel a lot and I would like to purchase prepaid SIM cards wherever I go. I currently have ZiPhone. I don't want to jailbreak anymore, so I have a iPhone 8GB freshly restored and activated with AT&T. Can someone help me and tell me how to ONLY unlock it via ZiPhone? Any help is appreciated please!

1. Load up Pwnage.
2. Pwn iPhone
3. Create custom firmware.
4. Install via iTunes
5. Enjoy!

jav6454, I'm actually in the UK, so I bought it on the O2 network.

Incidentally, the SIM I want to use is also an O2 pay monthly (contract) SIM, I just don't want to sign a new 18month contract as I still have 6 months existing on my current contract.

Thanks.

Then just byPass Activation on the iPhone. The guide for bypassing activation is on post 3 of this guide.

jav6454, ok, that's great - I'll give it a try.

I'm a student too (final year, neurobiology), so I'm praying nothing goes wrong because it's £329 ($652) for us!

Just before I start, my serial number suggests that it was made in week 10 of 2008, so I'm going to assume it's 1.1.4 and bootloader 4.6.

Wish me luck! :D

Thanks for your help.

Haha

Man I'm lovin you right now, just finished and everything looks to be fine. Itunes asked to me update my device or somethin of the sort and now I have two iphone icons in itunes (not sure what thats all about) but everything on the phone is running smooth as silk. Wanted to know what apps I should install. I'm new to this forum process so I'm not sure if it's cool or not to post questions like this here, if not sorry to clutter your post. Just trying to figure this whole thing out. Again, thank you so much.

An old 1.0.2 iPhone ( am I stuck?)

Hi:

I have a legit AT&T contract with a jailbroken iPhone at 1.0.2 (1C28) with Modem firmware 03.14.08_G
which is obviously quite old. I did not proceed further beyond 1.0.2. I have to admit that I have a "cold-feet" to move beyond 1.0.2 with all the "iPhone bricking" incidents. I was even (still is) have cold-feet to update my software version to 1.1.4 (recent)

Now.. I"ll be travelling overseas soon... and do not want to pay the exorbitant roaming charges. For my case, what interim steps that I need to do before using ZiPhone ? My goal is to unlock the phone & keep my 3rd-part application intact.. Appreciate any help. Thanks

1. In ZiPhone's GUI screen go to "Advance Features" and drop it down.
2. Uncheck "Downgrade Bootloader", "Activate" and "Jailbreak Filesystem" if checked and only leave "Unlock SIM-lock" checked.
3. Click "Perform Actions"
4. Relax and wait for 3-4 minutes, if iTunes props you with "iPhone in Recovery Mode detected" message, just ignore or close iTunes if you wish.
5. Once ZiPhone is done iPhone will reboot in normal mode.
6. Enjoy

Thanks. I tried this and it went fast 2 minutes at the most. I inserted a SIM card from another carrier and it said "Different SIM card detected, connect to iTunes" Should I connect to iTunes?? I don't want to mess up my iPhone :(
