Thanks. I tried this and it went fast 2 minutes at the most. I inserted a SIM card from another carrier and it said "Different SIM card detected, connect to iTunes" Should I connect to iTunes?? I don't want to mess up my iPhone :(

Mmmm, wierd. Don't connect to iTunes

Hi:

I have a legit AT&T contract with a jailbroken iPhone at 1.0.2 (1C28) with Modem firmware 03.14.08_G
which is obviously quite old. I did not proceed further beyond 1.0.2. I have to admit that I have a "cold-feet" to move beyond 1.0.2 with all the "iPhone bricking" incidents. I was even (still is) have cold-feet to update my software version to 1.1.4 (recent)

Now.. I"ll be travelling overseas soon... and do not want to pay the exorbitant roaming charges. For my case, what interim steps that I need to do before using ZiPhone ? My goal is to unlock the phone & keep my 3rd-part application intact.. Appreciate any help. Thanks

Ok first of all you have it unlocked under 1.0.2? If you unlocked with old unlocking method tell me, because updating directly will brick your iPhone (but it is recoverable)

Man I'm lovin you right now, just finished and everything looks to be fine. Itunes asked to me update my device or somethin of the sort and now I have two iphone icons in itunes (not sure what thats all about) but everything on the phone is running smooth as silk. Wanted to know what apps I should install. I'm new to this forum process so I'm not sure if it's cool or not to post questions like this here, if not sorry to clutter your post. Just trying to figure this whole thing out. Again, thank you so much.

Close iTunes and reopen, that get's rid of the the double iPhone symbols. As for apps, you install what you like; however, you need BSD subsystem installed (found under System in the Install Tab) to make your apps work.

Questions? Please post...

Ok, since you are an legit AT&T costumer (as am I, and I do travel like you). Let's do this, put in your AT&T SIM and connect to iPhone. Sync your iPhone save your contacts and everything

Edit: Tell me when you do that

Should I have put the SIM card I wanted to use in first?

I used the 'Don't Unlock' option in Ziphone like you said, but after it had completed I put in the SIM card I want to use, and it still only lets me access emergency calls, and has the iTunes and USB cable sign on the iPhone screen.

Also when I connect to iTunes it's asking me to start the activation process etc.

But.. it's now showing the O2UK network signal strength in the top left hand corner of the screen.

Should I try a full unlock?

Sorry to be a pain, thanks so much for the help.

Ok wierd. Try rebooting it. And post telling me your result

Edit - I am surprised since I just did the same procedure not 3 days ago on a friends iPhone and it worked.

No, still the same.

It's weird because I can dial out. I just dialled my home number and it works. A text just appeared aswell, but I still have the picture asking me to connect to iTunes, and it says slide for emergency.

Oh, and I should probably mention I have a small white rectangle/square next to the O2UK network indicator.

EDIT: Should I just try the 'Do it all ! ' option in Ziphone?

Ok...let's try something:

Connect to iTunes, and ignore it if it asks you to set up a o2 account. Then tell me if you can sync it

'Activation cancelled - it is now safe to disconnect your iPhone'

Will it hurt to try unlocking aswell? I'm just going to put the original SIM back in and try that I think..

You could hit the do it all, but you already jailbroke and "activated" so I think a restore is in order. The try to use the "Do it All" option. REMEMBER: Using that option downgrades your bootloader. There is another way to prevent downgrading the bootloader, it is also listed.

OK I've gone to Advanced features, unticked 'downgrade', which then only allows me to select jailbreak and activate.

Just waiting for it to complete now.

EDIT: OK, still the same.. only allowed to make emergency calls, but dialling normal numbers connects fine. I've restarted it too and still the same.

Remember you need to Restore first then do all those features because you already jailbroke and you already 'activated'. I do not know the effects of doing it over all ready pre-existing activations or jailbreaks

And do I restore with the 'Refurbish' option in ZiPhone?

Do you have AIM or MSN? Maybe it might speed things up a bit.

Sorry it's taking so long.

I appreciate your help. I just synced. Now what?

Ok, now Restore your iPhone to 1.1.4. That way you can reactivate with your contract and erase anything ZiPhone did. Then try again using the advance features to "Unlock and Jailbreak". REMEMBER TO UNCHECK DOWNGRADE BOOTLOADER.

Post with your results

Well the jailbreak worked, the unlocking I'm not sure about. I got the same error. Maybe it's the SIM CARD? It's a prepaid SIM card and it has no balance. The whole process took 1 minute too. Maybe that's it?

I'm honestly surprised that it gave you that message. In gonna go ahead and say its because you are still in the US. Maybe once you go abroad it'll work. I can't be 100% sure since mine when I put foreign SIM just didnt pick up signal in the US.

I'm sorry I'm not much help after this since this is the first time I can't seem to solve a problem. Let me investigate a bit. I'll post my findings. Hope u undestand

jav6454, so busy playing I forgot to say thanks!

Everything is working perfect and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks again.

I am getting one of the AT&T refurbs on Monday, most people that have gotten them have been at 1.1.1 firmware, with the 3.9 bootloader. If mine is the same these are the steps that I need to take right?....

1. Connect phone and do an itunes restore to 1.1.4

2. Download Ziphone, click do it all.

3. Wait 4-5min

4. Enjoy :)

I don't have to worry about any of the bootloader stuff if I am already at 3.9 right.

What should I install from the installer immediatly to make sure that everything works?

I will be trying the T-zones thing, so all I need to do is change my APN, and install the t-zones hack in tweaks right?

I just want to confirm that all the research I have been doing hasn't confused me too much, and that I have all the steps and info right. Thank You!

1. Yes since you are (assuming) on bootloader 3.9 the " Do it All" bottom will do nothing

2. BSD Subsystem is a must. found in system>Bsd

3. For T-Zones yes that's the procedure

Old 1.0.2 iPhone (am I stuck?)

Ok, if you were just jailbroken then just update to the latest firmware if you want or to 1.1.1. But before doing that, Sync with iTunes [to back up your iPhone files], Restore to 1.0.2 to erase everything and then update to whatever firmware you want [except 1.1.2].

Only unlocking your iPhone bricks it, if you go to 1.1.1

ok so i jailbroke my phone last night using ziphone. now when i call people they can hear me but i cant hear them, anyone know whats wrong?

Some problems arise, but its normal and a restore cleans away problems that many times were present in the phone before jailbreaking.

Sync, Restore and jailbreak again.

Outstanding guide.

Congrats, jav6454 !

Your guide is very nice (yes, it could receive a few corrections but it
does cover most of important stuff). Thank you a lot for putting
the time on it.

Here is my story : I just got a refurb iPhone from AT&T. For my surprise,
it came apparently unlocked as all functions are readily available (at this
point it is an iPod Wifi). I intend to put a T-Mobile SIM card tomorrow and
jailbreak it. Using your guide, I confirmed that this phone is from week 37,
uses 1.1.1 Firmware and 04.01.13_G Baseband.

The first time I plug the phone on my Macbook, iTunes asked me to
activate the phone. I ignored that and a profile was created with the
option to upgrade the firmware to 1.1.4.

I have no clue which method was used to unlock the phone.

So, should I follow the first part of your guide from scratch
(ie, running Ziphone to activate/jailbreak - no unlocking because it is
already unlocked) or just jailbreak ?

Thanks again for the awesome work.

Obs. I tried to transfer files using iTunes but it was not possible. All music selections
were gray and nothing was transferred (probably because the activation step ?)

First of all, if all features are working, but not the phone part as there is no SIM, then that doesn't mean its unlocked. The phone is just activated already.

Activation is different from unlocking. If the phone is already unlocked when you insert your T-Mobile SIM, then your iPhone won't complain saying "Incorrect SIM, Connect to iTunes".

If this message appears the phone has never been unlocked. If it does, update all the way to 1.1.4 and use this guide for whatever needs you have.

Hope it helps
