First of all, if all features are working, but not the phone part as there is no SIM, then that doesn't mean its unlocked. The phone is just activated already.

Activation is different from unlocking. If the phone is already unlocked when you insert your T-Mobile SIM, then your iPhone won't complain saying "Incorrect SIM, Connect to iTunes".

If this message appears the phone has never been unlocked. If it does, update all the way to 1.1.4 and use this guide for whatever needs you have.

Hope it helps

jav6454,

You're right (of course). My phone was not unlocked. I turned the
phone off and after powering it on, it showed the "Activate your phone"
screen. Is that normal ? thxs.

----

Just for the record : I successfully activated and jailbreaked my refurb iPhone following your instructions. My phone had an odd behavior (it asked to activate but sometimes it didn't after turning it off) and after a sync/restore everything went was planned. Being this guide very useful, I would recommend to edit the step-by-step instructions for Mac users. I believe jav6454 used a Windows version which has different labelling for ZiPhone's GUI buttons.

Excellent Write up jav6454!!!

jav6454, excellent information you have posted for newbie like me. I can't thank you enough for taking your time to help newbie like myself. Here's a quick question for you:

1) I bought my GF a refurbished Iphone. She is currently an ATT customer but I'm sure she does not want to start a new contract and especially for 2 years? All I want is to make sure she uses her current sim on the new iphone. What do you recommend?

2) The phone S/N 7R730XXXXXX: which mean year 2007 and week 30? How can I find out which firmware does it have?

3) The last reset was done on 10/01/2007.

jav,
your section about bootloaders is superbly entertaining and relevant to the unlocking world. thank you very much for writing these.
please continue to add on them.

I finally got my iPhone, and it turned out to be a 2007 week 37, so the issue of whether or not to downgrade the BL didn't apply to me. ZiPhone was very easy to use, and your guide really helped make me comfortable with it. So thank you again. :)

I'm up and running on T-Mobile now... I just have to fix a few things here and there, like figure out what to change all the SMTP servers to, and install a couple of things, but other than that....

Yeah, mine turned out to be week 30, I was very glad that I didn't have to worry. Ziphone worked wonderfully, running on T-mobile with $5.99 T-zones, and I couldn't be happier. :D I am having problems connecting to Wi-fi networks, but I think that it is the networks not the phone. (I got one working last night, but I cannot get my work network connected)

ok..

well first off thanks so much for this helpful post. i was unable to unlock my phone and now have it working with tmobile. The only issue i am facing now is that when i try to use safari i am getting an issue stating that phone could not activate and that i am not subscribed to edge. i did get the 19.99 data plan so i thought it should be working. have there been any known reports of safari not working once unlocked?

thanks!

Using my Iphone in Trinidad and Tobago

Hi there,

I know you probably get a ton of stupid questions about this, but i have to ask. I'm moving to Trinidad and Tobago in the caribbean in a few weeks and needed to know if my iphone 1.1.4 will work there once unlocked. i've done a little research a found out that the local networks there do support gsm phones.
You probably covered this in the post i'm responding to but i may have missed it. Is there easy answer to this and a reasonably easy way to do it?

Here's another one I'd love your help with... do you have any experience with the error that BSD Subsystem cannot be installed? My phone successfully jailbreaked, unlocked, and activated. It syncs with iTunes, and it can access the T-Mobile GSM and EDGE networks. Installer was installed, and I was able to successfully install something to it, sort of (Send Song, it installed fine but it crashes immediately). But BSD Subsystem refuses to install; there's a download error. I tried re-installing Installer and rebooting, but this didn't fix it. Some threads suggest doing Jailbreak again.

Any recommendations?

Uninstall everything you installed with Installer. Then try BSD again, then all sources, then SummerBoard and finally go back to Springboard to restart it. Reboot the entire iPhone and then try to install applications. This was my same mistake when I first jailbroke my 1.1.1 back in September.

As long as you follow the localization instructions, then yes. If you unlock and don't localize then the SMS and phone app will crash continuously.

Well, did you change your APN settings? EDGE settings for T-Mobile are different. I don't know which are the settings... Let me check and I'll repost.

Here you go, I found it:

T-Mobile (USA)
APN: wap.voicestream.com

1. Activate it using ZiPhone as I pointed out in the Activation post.

2. Yes, it means its 2007 iPhone from week 30. Which firmware is visible by going to Settings > General > About, after that check software and firmware version and compare to the one posted in this guide.

3. Last reset means nothing, only that the old settings are gone [old contacts, Wi-Fi passwords or Safari cookies & cache]

Important: I wrote up a Windows based Guide. Reason is my MBP will not run ZiPhone and I have tried everything [I don't want to call Apple to report issues with ZiPhone, imagine what they say...] so I am forced to use my old HP dv1000 for iPhone unlocking related issues.

Unlocking, jailbreaking or BOTH??

Hi,
I live in Norway, and from your guide I understand I'll have to jailbreak my iPhone since my country is not supported.

I've just taken my iPhone out of the box, have downloaded ZiPhone, but am still a little confused... do I unlock my Iphone first and THEN jailbreak it afterwards? Or does jailbreaking also unlock it so there's no need?

Thanks for any help. Your guide is excellent, but I got confused once I realized I have to do multiple tasks in one (unlocking, jailbreaking AND localizing...)

When you use the unlocking section of this guide you will notice that there are to Case Specific Steps. One are for bootloader downgrade and another for keeping the bootloader. Taking aside Bootloader issues, both methods Unlock, Jailbreak and Activate. [All these things are done at the same time by ZiPhone]

Once you do all those three things, then you continue with Localizing.

Thanks... that actually did not work for me, even when nothing was installed besides Installer.app. I read through several more threads and was directed to this:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/460381/

And ultimately this:

http://www.hackthatphone.com/114/iphone_cydia.html

It's a bit silly, in that now I have *two* package managers on my iPhone (although, lol, I guess my Eee has apt-get, dpkg, gdebi, aptitude, synaptic, and Ubuntu's add/remove tool!). But with Cydia and Fake BSD installed, the application that was giving me trouble worked just fine. :)

But this seems to be a better route because it seems to work consistently on 1.1.4 phones, and a number of people seem to be unable to get past the BSD installation error.

It's good to stand on the shoulders of giants. In between meetings and a doctor's appointment, I just got my iPhone in the late morning, and yet, it is already jailbroken, unlocked & activated on T-Mobile, has custom ringtones, Flickr integration, and Blockbuster queue management. :)

Thanks so much. Just have one more question... From what I understand, the "do all" button downgrades the bootloader, while if you do each task separately, you get to "keep" the current bootloader. Fine... but which method should I choose? Is there large differences between the two bootloaders? The OP doesn't list pro's and con's or everything, so a little help here would be much appreciated!

And sorry for asking my (possible) stupid questions. I just want to do it right, cause I know if problems occur later, I'll have difficulties dealing with them...

I'm the OP, and there is a full section detailing Bootloaders in this guide. It is found in the FAQs section (See Table of Contents in Post 1).

I know bootloader topics have been pretty much beat to death in this thread, but I still have a question that I haven't found an answer to. (I have read every post on this thread).

I had a 1.1.3 otb upgraded to 1.1.4 phone I got for Christmas so I am assuming it came with 4.6 bootloader.

When ZiPhone came out I decided to jailbreak only. I did it and I wasn't able to get yahoo mail or youtube to work. I restored and have stayed that way.

My questions are:

1. can I assume that my bootloader was changed to 3.9? Is the bootloader only changed if you unlock or does it happen with jailbreaking as well?

2. If my phone has some problem and I have to take it back to an Apple store are they going to know I jailbroke my phone, thus voiding my warranty?

Thanks for any answers.

1. Bootloader only changes to 3.9 from 4.6 if and only if you press the "Do it All" button which unlocks, activates and jailbreaks or if you use the Advance Features to downgrade. Jailbreaking does not alter your bootloader.

2. Apple has no way (next to impossible) of telling whether an iPhone was jailbroken and then wiped clean by the Restore function.

Quick Question for the Experts!!

So, I finally figure all I need to know. I have an iphone with version 1.11 and with bootloader 3.9. I also know that I just need to activate since I am a cingular customer. The question is that I bought this phone for my GF. She is acting up right now and I don't think that she will get it. I was wondering if I can use it on my SIM card and when I'm ready to get it to her just to do a restore and activate again with her SIM card. Will I see any trouble if I switch SIM. I also notice that when I received the phone I was able to play with all the button, now the only things it say that I need to activate the phone and scroll for emergency call? does mean that I need to restore it? also I have version 1.11, If I decide to upgrade to 1.14, can i downgrade the firmware? I know that the bootloader you cant? I was thinking on staying on 1.11 instead upgrading to 1.14 because I'm not sure if i can go back to 1.11. Thank for the all the help.

iPlus is just another tool like ZiPhone.

ZiPhone was however the first tool in its kind. Others copied it. Also people blast it because it downgrades the bootloader if you are not careful. However, smart people know not to do things straight away with out searching how it works.

People who complain about ZiPhone are just plain lazy.

iPlus' only advantage is the 3.9FB, but that can be corrupted by iTunes and be replaced by BL 3.8 or 3.1.

See FAQs about these Bootloaders.

ZiPhone was not the first tool of this kind. It was the first publicly released tool of this kind. The code that ZiPhone uses was invented by other members of the iphone dev team and released without permission. The author of ZiPhone did not invent the exploits, he simply took them and commercialised the application. THAT is why it is criticized, and it has nothing to do with laziness. Get your facts straight next time.

To avoid 'corruption' of the bootloader, you simply need to make sure you don't install firmware 1.1.1 on your iPhone as the process is known to overwrite 3.9FB with 3.8 (not 3.1). This is a pretty simple thing to avoid - don't install 1.1.1. This does not happen with 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4 so it is a moot concern and a small price to pay for the ability to reverse the downgrade or update to a more advanced/pre-exploited bootloader if one chooses later. Using ZiPhone is a one-way street with respect to bootloader downgrades in comparison.

In addition to this, the comments regarding 3.8 need to be further clarified. Users who are running 3.8 (due to the fact that they have downgraded to 1.1.1 and inadvertently had the 3.9fb overwritten) have shown no ill effects of running this baseband. ie. all exploits known to work under 3.9 indeed work under 3.8. So right now there is also no cause for concern to be running this (you voided your warranty with apple the moment you didn't sign up the phone plan anyway, and if you did sign up for the phone plan you don't need to unlock the baseband and thus have no concern for what bl you are running).

When I mean first tool of its kind is that ZiPhone was the first tool put out there that does all the things it does. The rest just followed along AFTER ZiPhone came out including using code from Zibri he freely posted. Now you get your facts straight.

Now as for Zibri's findings, I never posted saying otherwise, likewise I never posted saying he didn't do wrong. So don't go at me for that. I know my facts, its you that have a picky attitude towards me.

As for Bootloaders itself, I have clearly BOLDED every since I posted about them that the culprits were 1.1.1 and 1.0.0. I think you should read more and don't skim. As for FB, don't get me wrong, it is a good thing to have it, but risky if you are a newbie [As you may read this guide is for newbies, not experts]

As for Bootloader 3.8, there is need to clarify even more. That bootloader is wrong to have and once you have, there is no way up. Period. True it has 3.9 exploits, but that was also posted (unless you didn't read).

As per the warranty, I did make it clear that you need to sign up with AT&T or whatever legit carrier out there so that Apple can consider the warranty. Once again, it seems you skim, not read. I also posted that it depends on the Genius or Apple Care rep, there are some cases of people not signed up getting the warranty.

So, if you feel like blasting me go ahead, I don't mind. I just want you to know that blasting others for helping just so you can have a moment of fun is wrong. Basically I think you are the kind of person who doesn't like other to do things, but doesn't do them themselves, hence are bitter all their life.

Ok.

first off, since your bootloader is 3.9, then yes you can downgrade your firmware and your baseband. As for activating it just to use it with an old AT&T [Cingular] SIM, yes you can just activate it and go ahead and use it [be sure its not already activated before you go on and doing so]. As for firmware 1.1.4, yes you can go ahead and update or restore to that version, which ever you prefer, ZiPhone will activate, unlock and jailbreak or which ever task you need. If you decide to give it to her, and she wants the contract, just Restore and set up as new iPhone through iTunes. If she decides to keep her current plan then, just swap SIMs and that is it.

Any more questions? feel free to ask.

I can't say enough how great this little device is. I feel like I can't never be out touch. I finally decide to activate and jailbreak it. I did not unlock since I am a cingular customer. The next big thing is to play with adding software with jailbreak. Thank a lot for your help JAV6454. Oh I did not upgrade my firmware, I left it at 1.11. I hope nothing happen by leaving it default.
