The '08-'09 NHL Season Thread

Hockey? The Islanders certainly don't know how to play that.

Nice. :D

Is that a picture of Michael Peca? That '01-'02 was the best team I ever got to see.

Doubtful. Carter and Niittymäki weren't on the Flyers back then.

Over/Under 2 weeks?

I'd say over... but barely. They have to keep this whole circus on the up and up. And maybe give Burke time to find a place in Toronto and move all his stuff.

Really? Does this thread really deserve to die?

There's so much going on in the NHL:

-Brian Burke situation- soon to be President and GM of the Leafs (?)
-Dustin Penner benching and tongue-lashing by Craig MacTavish. Great restricted free agent signing, Lowe.
-Doug Gilmour hired to head coach the Kingston Frontenacs
-Islanders win 2 in a row against the Sens. Now 3W in a row.
-Headshots crackdown
-Ovechkin and Semin are both +17
-Captain Luongo already has 5 shutouts
-Rangers in first place in the East, Sharks in the West
-The Avs signed Paul Stastny to a five-year contract extension worth $33 million

Where are all the NHL fans?

Where are all the NHL fans?

I'm right here. Actually I am a fan back from the 90's. I was glued to the TV in '94 with the Rangers. I stopped watching hockey around '98 and I have been trying to get back into the sport since Carolina won. I'm just not as excited as I used to be. Can't seem to choose a favorite team. My local ESPN gets BlueJackets but they don't impress me. Very few players are left over from the mid-90's (as expected).

Detroit kicked butt last season but I don't want to bandwagon a team and then change every few years. One thing that I have always loved and been impressed by was the goalies. I used to be the goalie as a teanager with my buds on the street and will always have a soft spot for that position (even if I had a soft spot in my armor ).

So who do you guys suggest I watch (outside of Islanders and Leafs LOL)?

n8mac, why aren't you still a Rangers fan? They're doing well this season- 1st place, and have shed a lot of the crap from the past few seasons.

Not the Rangers :D

You answered the question, it's the Rangers. Then again, my answer might be a bit biased.

Who told my Islanders they can win games all the sudden? My hopes are still pretty dismal so I don't get disappointed later on.

What's the news on Burke? Did he accept that position yet?

The Islanders seem to be holding their own without their 15-year-man.

No news on the Burke front yet. Things should start to heat up beginning tomorrow. The lawyers on each side haven't had a chance to begin negotiations yet- but they've been talking a little. Burke isn't even in Toronto yet- he's in Vancouver enjoying a hunting trip.

My friend and I are convinced he's trying to get out of his contract. Can't say that I blame him. McDonald is doing a really great job with nobody in really in front of him.

He's not hunting with Dick Cheney is he?

Hehe, nope. Canada wouldn't let Cheney into the country. And there are no guns in Canada.

Hmmm.... wouldn't that be interesting, if he got out of the contract. Pretty embarrassing for the Snow man.

The Bruins are fighting, and winning  Let's see how long it lasts..Maybe the Jacobs realized that with the other three teams in town each winning a championship in the last three years,it was time to take it up a level..

Man, I feel for B's fans. The Jacobs are awful owners.

Good to see the Bruins- and the Blackhawks- returning to respectability. The NHL needs all of the Original Six to be strong franchises.

We have felt the pains from the jacobs, Sinden and McConnell.
I have to say so far this season has been extremely exciting.

or julien is screaming his head off. Best move the B's made in a long time..why he wasn't coach of the year dazzles me to this day.

And the rangers are only playing the last 10 minutes of the game....They need to change this.
Anyone have the center ice package? I've had it over the last few years but this is my first year with my HDTV and the feeds look awful some to the point where i can't watch, anyone else think the feeds are awful?

1st place? Nice. Most of the games I have been watching in the last few years have been in the playoffs in which I am glued the closer it gets to the cup. I guess I will fire up VS more and see what they are up to. Was hoping to see Messier still in it but they don't last forever.

Nice win for the Bruins last night in Montreal. This team is real fun to watch this year..Are you watching all this Harry???

Am I the only one who thinks that the Stars are in major trouble and the ducks are now just a good team instead of a great team? I may be biased as I am a Sharks fan but if we lost Thornton or Naby for the season, we would be just as screwed as the stars and ducks are.

and come tomorrow, the Canucks may be even more screwed then the ducks and stars combined if Luongo is out for an extended period of time

You aren't the only one. I agree with that. Injuries are killing those teams- injuries are killing almost every team. What's going on this year? Everyone is hurt....

Luongo is listed as week-to-week with an abductor strain.

Leafs made a trade today- sent a couple of players that have been full of potential for the last 4 years to St. Louis for Lee Stempniak. St. Louis is taking a big gamble on Colaiacovo (addicted to injuries) and Steen (good defensive forward, just hasn't lived up to his potential). My guess is Colaiacovo was a throw in, and they probably think that Steen (who is Thomas Steen's son, of Winnipeg Jets fame) will break out with a new team. Good luck to both of them.....

Any Blues fans around that can comment on Stempniak? He looks like a solid 2nd or 3rd liner..... yes/no?

Thank you Ryan O'Byrne for putting the puck in your own net :D

Islanders manage to defeat the Habs 4-3 in a SO. I haven't seen the Isles beat the Habs in really long time.

Isles have won 5 of their last 6. What the hell is going on here?

Resident Blues fan here...Stemp is pretty inconsistent. He'll go stretches where he's better than a point/point-and-a-half a game, and then others where he'll go several games without a point. Last year was a disappointing year for him, especially after scoring 27 goals the year before.

He seems to thrive when given a lot of ice time on a top line. With the Blues decimated by injuries, he was getting that time again, and producing. However, when the Blues were healthy and he was on the 3rd line, he wasn't producing. He performs best when he's on the first line...sadly, he's not good enough to be on most teams first line.

Here in St. Louis, I feel like many people are more attached to the name "Stempniak," rather than being attached to what he actually brought to the ice- in short, I think most St. Louisans overvalued him.

Over/Under 2 weeks?

Looks like it was 'Over' by 3 days.

Bryan Burke has finally arrived in Toronto. I watched the press conference live on mapleleafs.com, and it looks like he's bringing instant class and respect to the organization.

My favorite part of his philosophy is that he expects his players to be very involved in the community, and if they're not, he'll trade them.

Here's a great article that talks all about his way of building a team.

It's going to be an interesting 5-10 years......

Go Leafs Go.
