I carry my 17 around with me. I'm lucky that Im not a 4.5' dwarf with spaghetti thin arm, and have no issues carrying mine with me. :D

Greytmom... what a well thought out screen name you've come up with.

Hee! The meaning is probably a bit different than you'd expect... I run a greyhound rescue group.

I do have a daughter, but she says I like the dogs better. I pretend not to hear her when she asks about it.

The 17" MBP is very compact for what it is, it is almost as large as regular 15" notebooks and the bezel is much thinner so it looks nicer and I'm guessing is no bigger than it needs to be. The 13" on the other hand, is quite unremarkable. Having said that, the 17" MBP uses components that everyone else puts in their 15s.

I kind of think that a laptop needs to be as small as possible. I mean its ment to carry around isn't it.

I kind of think it should be what the individual buying it wants it to be.

It's no skin off my nose if someone else wants to purchase a machine that I think is too small for me (the 13"), and I truly don't care if someone else purchases a machine that is a bit big for me (17").

Those of you paying attention have probably deduced that I have a 15" MBP.

It's not that much bigger when they are closed.

I agree that 15" is perfect balance :p . When it's open, it's big enough that you don't have to ruin your posture and lean forward to read text, and when closed small enough to carry easily.

Interesting photos. I'm deciding between a 13" and 15". These pictures really show the size of the 17". Not knocking on anyone who purchased one, but why get a laptop of that size? To each his own, I guess.

My wife just got the 17" (to replace her old 15" MBP). She does a lot of document work (she telecommutes), and puts two documents up side by side. I offered to hook up an external monitor so she could use a smaller MBP - but no, she wanted the 17" and she loves it. It's basically a desktop replacement, though. She will move it around the house - but when she leaves the house she takes her 1st generation Air.

My MBP is only 15".... so yes, her computer is bigger than mine. But I've got a Mac Pro at my desk, so I guess that evens it out.

That 17" is nice though. When I've had a chance to get my mitts on it, it's been a really nice experience.

I traveled for 2 years with a 17" laptop everyday, it really was no problem. And my old laptop is heavier then a 17" MBP.

+1
the 17" really isn't very big. in comparison it is the same size as most 15" PCs, only thinner.

Macrumors... only place you'll find a bunch of men claiming that fewer inches are better.

most of the girly girl men probably haven't even held the 17" for fear they might break a nail and sweat enough to mess up their makeup.

Luckily the MBA exists.

Are we pulling an Arnold Schwarzenegger here? ;)

In any case, I think the 17' is too big. But that's just me. This entire thread is sort of stupid, considering everyone needs different sizes for different reasons. Some things in life really are entirely subjective, and this is one of those. I will stick with the 15' or 13'.

the 17 isn't that big! it weighs less and is thinner then my 15" pc laptop and is only an inch and a half longer. it amazes me the number of people that complain about is massive size. i can more then handle the 6.6lbs to carry around as can my 7 year old daughter. IMO I don't see why anyone would want a 13" screen.

Look up the dictionary definition of 'big'. Size and weight are not the same things.

Some of us have back issues, so have to have the smaller ones (I have a 15" PBG4, 13" MacBook and just moved down to an 11" Air, and am considering getting a 17" MBP just to use as a portable desktop - it would be carried from home to car, car to desk, desk to car and car to home again). Also, I recommend you try and use a 15" or larger laptop on a plane, from experience, the only place its possible in any form of dignity is First Class, in Economy/Business I prefer my 12" Tablet PC or 11" Air over even my 13" MacBook (It still wont fit comfortably, despite being small).

i have used a 15" laptop on a plane, regular seats. also in my vehicle all day long as it sat on my lap or on the center console. no doubt a 13" MBP is much easier to carry. my point is that people make the 17" out to be some heavy 15lb awkward thing to lug around. compared to my 15" HP the 17" MBP would be a dream to carry around( maybe not so great on a plane seat)

Looking at these comparison pics.... my choice has been made. Selling the 13" and picking up the 17" MBP. The jump in screen size, max RAM and the extra port will be very helpful. Pro Tools on a 13" MBP is doable, but frustrating.

no kidding! but most complain about the size and weight of the 17".
And "big" can be used to describe differences in size and weight.

I don't know, I see most people complaining about the size and then those whom like the 17' bringing weight into the subject. But in any case, for me personally it has to do with being able to use my laptop in planes, in the car, and while sitting on the couch. I almost never use my laptop sitting down at a desk or table, so the 17' vs. a 13' or 15' is indeed a big difference for me. I suppose if I wanted to use the 17 inch in an office environment then it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Also, no, it can't. Perhaps informally, in that you can use it that way if you want, but if we're going to use it in the correct way it is not in any way related to or interchangeable with weight.

–adjective
1. large, as in size, height, width, or amount: a big house; a big quantity.

I don't want to be that person who nags about every spelling mistake, I just didn't like the way you criticized others for saying it was too big and then launched into points about weight without separating them. :p

The 17 inch does not have any increased ability to run more ram or even a bigger HDD than the 13 inch.

I'm getting the 17" next (after refresh). I have had numerous 13" apple laptops including my current 13" MBA.

The 17" screen is a beauty and I use my laptop increasingly for watching movies, I very rarely take it out of the house but like to have the portability to use it in whichever room I like, which is a little difficult with my iMac.;)

Oh, BTW, the 15" isn't the sweet spot, it's just for people who can't decide which size they want and go for the middle one :p

Disclaimer: This will be my last comment along these lines, I swear.

15" seems pretty sweet to me.

Carry on.

Captain Obvious is on deck. *facepalm

LOL.

I've owned all the unibody models, 11-17" and I still think the 17" was my 2nd favorite.

Compared to most PC 17" laptops it is tiny, and it can fit in most bags that say up to 15" laptops.

Basically a portable powerhouse, and definitely a desktop replacement.

I love my current 11" Air, but not being able to have my whole iTunes library on it kinda ruins the charm a bit.
