I don't know, I see most people complaining about the size and then those whom like the 17' bringing weight into the subject. But in any case, for me personally it has to do with being able to use my laptop in planes, in the car, and while sitting on the couch. I almost never use my laptop sitting down at a desk or table, so the 17' vs. a 13' or 15' is indeed a big difference for me. I suppose if I wanted to use the 17 inch in an office environment then it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Also, no, it can't. Perhaps informally, in that you can use it that way if you want, but if we're going to use it in the correct way it is not in any way related to or interchangeable with weight.

I don't want to be that person who nags about every spelling mistake, I just didn't like the way you criticized others for saying it was too big and then launched into points about weight without separating them. :p

i don't use a laptop at a desk, i use a desktop. i have carried laptops around in the field for years, and use my laptop on my lap. most complaints seem to be about size and weight, too big and heavy is the most common complaint. i use a 15" HP laptop, my wife has a 17" HP which dwarfs the MBP.
in Apples world the 17" MBP is their largest and heaviest laptop, in the real world it is amazing that it can be the size it is and only weigh 6.6lbs.

i wasn't criticizing and i did separate....i said "is thinner then my 15" pc laptop and is only an inch and a half longer" to me that looks like a size comparison.

Keyboards are the same but look very different in size in the second pic.

I carry my 17 around with me. I'm lucky that Im not a 4.5' dwarf with spaghetti thin arm, and have no issues carrying mine with me. :D

i'm what you describe but 5'10 and have no issues at all with my 17". I'm on my couch right now typing away while waiting for fedex with my iphone :)

My Ideal set up would be my 13"inch MBP with an i5 hooked to a cinema display at home and just disconnect when on the go...

Clearly you are lying. We all know that the 17" is simply immobile; too massive to even pretend to utilize it on anything other than a stable well grounded fixture with redundant supports. ;) :D

Looking at these comparison pics.... my choice has been made. Selling the 13" and picking up the 17" MBP. The jump in screen size, max RAM and the extra port will be very helpful. Pro Tools on a 13" MBP is doable, but frustrating.

Not only that, getting a 17" MBP means you stand to gain the very useful ExpressCard/34 slot that some of us appreciate having. :)

i have used a 15" laptop on a plane, regular seats. also in my vehicle all day long as it sat on my lap or on the center console. no doubt a 13" MBP is much easier to carry. my point is that people make the 17" out to be some heavy 15lb awkward thing to lug around. compared to my 15" HP the 17" MBP would be a dream to carry around( maybe not so great on a plane seat)

If youve managed to use a 15" Laptop on a plane, in coach, then you mustve had nearly no room to move around at all/ put anything else on the tray table. My 13" Gives me just enough room for a Water on the tray table, and the 11" makes flying transatlantic, even in coach, easy enough, as the 11" is no bigger than a decent book/Airplane meal - I couldnt live with anything bigger/heavier (back issues + regular trans-atlantic flights + constantly needing a laptop with me = anything larger than 13" is ridiculous).

Try lugging my 17 inch Monster around ;)
Sure beats my old 13 inch Toshiba Satellite Laptop.

The looks of disgust from the people shopping, when I got it out the bag in Birmingham Bullring Apple Store at the Genius Bar, to diagnose a problem with how iTunes was behaving with my iPhone.

It was like I'd pulled a dead puppy out of my bag and dropped it at the Genius Bar.

really? that's the issue? what i did or did not have on my tray...okkkk
it may be ridiculous for you......that's your choice, my choice is to have a slightly larger screen and the extra 1 pound i can handle.

Those pictures make me want a 17" all the much more! I'm currently using a 15" and it's just too small for me. Of course, I don't take it with me anywhere and use it as a desktop replacement. I am very much looking forward to the increase in screen size when I get my new 17" beast at the next refresh. This mid-2006 first-gen macbook pro is certainly getting long in tooth! I've got a 9" netbook running OSX with a 14 hr battery for portability.

Agreed. Those pics just make me want it more

Eh, as long as you carry a bag, 17" is no big deal.
I used to have an HP HDX "Notebook PC" with a 21.5" screen.
I carried it to school a few times. For 21.5," it only had a 1650x1050 resolution. All I can say is, after owning a 12" 1.5GHz PowerBook G4, 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook G4, 13" 2.53GHz MacBook Pro, and my current 15" i5 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, i'd have to say this is the ultimate compromise between the 13" and the 17".

Seriously? You people are calling me too scrawny to be able to hold a laptop? I can hold and carry the 17", but my 13" is just so much easier to lug around and take everywhere. I use my 13" as a portable computer to take everywhere with me (school, home, traveling, etc...), not as a computer to use on the couch. That is why the 13" is so much better for me. The 17" or even the 15" may be better for you. Great. Just don't criticize people's abilities to carry a laptop without reason. Kthxbai.

The screen size must be nice, but I think it's kind of ugly below that. The keyboard just looks comically unproportional. All that aluminum surrounding it

No one really mentionned resolutions

The 13" would be perfect if it had a high res screen in it. The form factor is my favorite but the resolution is too impractical to work with. As it is I have a 15" high-res which isn't that high-res but would much prefer a 13" with a better screen. Well see what the refresh brings.

No they don't. Off center keyboards are the pitts, and as a current 17" uMBP owner I believe the current arrangement is more than suitable.

I guess if that comes form a 17" MBP owner, then it is true. I don't have one, nor do I use one. I guess you are right, but there are plenty of people who disagree with you...

I love my 13" unibody (late 2010 model), and despite a long overdue upgrade from my 15" PowerBook G4, my MBP feels a bit "cramped" but I love the larger glass trackpad.

There is a notebook out there for everyone be it a Mac or a PC and screen size. Since I'm pretty much a casual user but still enjoy a good game and still use Photoshop on occasion, my MBP is a good fit for me. :apple:

I just love my 17. The full HD Screen estate is just awesome.

And come on! it is only 6.6 lbs. I've carried it to school many times. Never had a problem with it.
