what else should he do? it was pretty clear.

a lot of pressure on france to win against mexico now. South africa is not mathematically out yet and they'll want to give it all against france next week

I haven't seen another replay, but it looked like the pass was quite offsides and the the play should've been stopped.

If that was red card worthy why the hell didn't Casillas get a red card earlier today?

nobody knows but .. neither anybdoy knows why the swiss - spain game got 5 extra minutes ... and then played 6 extra minutes

that said for the world cup fantasy league .. it was a nice day to have Forlan in your squad and to transfer in a defender as well ... yay for 16 points already

Because it is a minimum of 5 extra minutes.

as far as Casillas, i tend to agree (have not seen a good replay of that one, but it semes evident he took him down), but it wasn't the same ref and the same game so it's kind of moot.

the SA goalie clearly took down suarez and so the foul was there, but -again- i have not seen a replay of the play leading to that foul.
If indeed there was an offside, than you are right and it was a mistake and the penalty (and the red card) shouldn't have been given (maybe a yellow for dangerous play).
It would be a mistake of the linesman, though.

in any case uruguay totally deserved the win, even if it was 1-0 wouldn't have changed much

i want to add that this games continues the series of questionable goals:
key deflection for the first
controversial penalty for the second
ugliest header in the history of football for the third.

Well, I'm happy that Spain lost. They were too much arrogant. It will teach them about humility. All those spanish medias were already saying "La Roja campion del mundo". Pero no amigos. But I think (and I hope for them) that they'll get through to the next round, along with Chile (or Swizterland, who can tell at this point.)

I hope we will finally see some nice goals in the upcoming matches, because that all the teams have played their 1st match, they should play a bit more now, and stop being afraid of losing. I personnally hope that France will make everybody quiet by winning comfortably against Mexico and finishing the tasks versus the Bafanas Bafanas. But with Domenech, it might be hard this year. Why does he keep putting Govou. This guy is useeeeeeeeeless.

the point was that even 5 minutes was a way too much ... it already smelled of "playing until the equalizer happens"

edit: and the new low of this world cup: south african fans leaving after the 2:0 ... that's what a call shameful for a host

I have to agree with both points...interesting that FIFA president is Swiss though and was seen smiling after the game...but that was a travesty...even 3 min would've been too much...

Doesn't seem to me the South Africans are football fans...even if my team was losing I'd still be at the stadium till they kick me out...

The Argentina - Korea game is quite good...Higuain just got me some more points...

Exactly what I thought, there was hardly any stoppages at all to even warrant a minute of added time. For a moment there I thought I was watching a Man U match when he held the sign up.

It looks like the officiating favours the favourites in this WC as it has in all the others. From a personal perspective, the failure to award a penalty to Australia for the German handball would have made it 2-1 and a game of it at least. But no penalty and a sending off for Australia for a tackle a German wouldn't have even gotten a yellow for guaranteed a German rout. I really don't know why they think the stronger teams actually need their help.

I guess it's the same thing as a good player needing to milk the ref like Sweinsteiger did to get Cahill sent off. They really don't need to cheat if they're better players anyway. The classic was Rivaldo pretending to be hit in the face. I just think why??

And wasn't it fantastic when Forlan scored? A brief but wonderful moment of those infernal horns being silenced. I hope South Africa gets knocked out asap.

1 more goal and it'll be the highest scoring game of the tournament. Unfortunately I had it at 2-1 so there goes my £20 winnings :(

Was Higuain offside not once, but three times in that movement? Another competitve game killed off by biased officiating in favour of the favourites.

wait the australian complain about a bad referee ? .. seriously rewatch that game ...
and yeah schweinsteiger totally "Milked the referee" when he forced the australian to slide into him from behind with no chance for the ball...
and also a clear hands with both hands in front of the body pulled in close ...

seriously if germany puts in the sitters in the first half it's 5:0 at the break... the expierenced australian defense simply was too slow on their feet and in thinking forward (and way too much upfield.. which was a tactical mistake by the coach)

I don't think we are watching the same games...the officiating has been better than expected...also the last thing we need in this sub-par World Cup is goals disallowed...

Cheer up Cahill will be back for the Serbia game...:)

referees have been very good so far.
no obvious mistakes, some might have been done of course, but would have been close calls anyways.
what's most important, no game was significantly impacted by wrong ref decision yet.

hopefully it will last.

so far the only "blame the referee" calls that I have seen have been from
- the spanish press (who claimed an inexistent penalty at the beginning, a missed red card on iniesta's dive in the first half, curiously no mention of casillas' tsunami on the swiss goal),
- the SA coach (on the correct goalie red card decision)
- and now our own awmazz (like australia lost because of the ref, come on).

edit: another red card in the nigeria game, but another proper decision by the ref

looks like greece finally remembered they are a football team (being one man up and on the verge of elimination helps, i guess)

and yet another ugly goal. not only there are few of them, but the vast majority are off defensive blunders, deflections or lucky bounces

I missed the first two games this morning. Yesterday FIFA announced they will be doubling their efforts to drown out the Vuvuzela's for the international feed. Did anyone notice a difference?

^^^ I watched the Greece/Nigeria match, and while you can still hear them, it really wasn't all that bad, at least to me.

I never said we lost because of the ref. Australia was already being outplayed by a better team so why the need to give Germany even more help by denying Australia a clear handball penalty? And giving an Aussie player a straight red for a tackle that I've seen other players not even get a yellow for just killed the game outright so what would have been 2-1 turned into 4-0 instead... and then having to listen to all the post-match crowing about how brilliant Germany are...

Doesn't even bother me losing against Germany as it was never the plan to win that game anyway. Like the last WC being in Brasil's group, not beating the big team was always part of the calculations. A win/draw or win/win in the other two games will see Australia progress because both will also lose against Germany too just like with Brasil last time. The only difference this time around was we played the big team first up.

Whoever won between Ghana/Serbia first up is the team Australia always needed to beat, so it's Ghana. My prediction, a win against Ghana and a draw against Serbia sends Australia through with 4 points (to face England hopefully :) ) to Ghana's 3.

Yes, the Nigerian straight red was the correct decision. And the grass is green too. You don't have to even be a good referee to call that one correctly. What the hell was that guy thinking? He wants to go home as Nigeria's Beckham. :D

yeah 'other' players ... other _australian_ players
who were on multiple situations simply demanded offsides.. even when wrong.. simply because they were that far behind in speed

as said before: your "clear handball penalty" wasn't one ... not even close ... it would require the hand going to the ball and intent .... having the hands close in front of your body to protect your body from a shot simply isn't a penalty

and if australia plays against ghana like they did against germany ... good luck with that ... the aussie team simply is beyond their prime

I've noticed that the fan in the Titanium PowerBook I'm using drowns out the vuvuzelas.:) Didn't think of them during the games; become accustomed or reduced level?

Cheers,
