You English are awful damned negative. Look at this way, your goalie didn't give away anything ;)

:)
also the situation is not that bad, really.
like for the US and everyone else in the group, their future is in their hands.
they win against slovenia, they are through. if they can't do that, it's fair they go home.

remember, it's a long tourney, it's not essential to play well in the first round, just to go through.

honestly i still don't see exactly the reason for having heskey as an additional striker and thus sacrificing an additional central midfielder in a 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 formation

Had enough, now watching Gardners' World.

Just curious what all the Brits on the board think?
Depends which Brits you're asking. I suspect the Scots and the Welsh will have a different opinion from the English. :p

Not good enough. Simple as.

England's approach to the game, that is. Not Anthony Gardner, who is ace.

Did some kind of a football match just take place? I must've missed it.
And this coming from an Old Etonian.

skunk for England manager, I say.

Pretty uninspired, flat play from England eh? They honestly should have put both the US and Algeria away fairly easily.

Didn't your lot bring Fabio Capello in back in 2008 for some obscene amount of money like $9 Million a year to avoid just this scenario? Namely a bunch of big name players with little team chemistry not gelling together in the World Cup who really have not lived up to their billing yet?

Just curious what all the Brits on the board think?

I imagine the Scottish and Welsh members are fairly happy. Re Capello, the majority of the big decisions are off.

Edit - ^^^ too slow for Jaffa. Meanwhile, David Beckham has been approached by an England fan who got into the England dressing room.

Cheers,
OW

The thing is, the World Cup (and European Championships) often attract 'casual' fans who don't generally watch a lot of football the rest of the time.

Building up your hopes and then seeing them pathetically crushed provides them with a useful insight into the life of the regular football supporter. So, taking positives and all that. :)

second, basically you are advocating that because today's ref made a mistake, the ref in the germany-australia game should have also made the wrong calls in order to favor your team.

I'm now advocating that those who admonished me about a German handball not being a penalty should apologise for looking foolish now after Germany themselves accepted a penalty for exactly (unintentional handball by a Serb) what they've been trying to tell me wasn't a penalty, thus the German team itself totally agrees with my point that the German handball v Australia was indeed a penalty. That was *not* given. :D

No but trust me if I was I would be making my opinion heard. Besides, do I have to be in SA to understand the fans' disappointment or express my opinion?
I remember the BBC interviewing people leaving to SA and there was one guy that had to leave his job so that he could travel, honestly believing that it would be worth it.
Question his decision, doubt his sanity if you will but that sort of commitment doesn't deserve what the performance they got today. Realize it or not, that's what representing your country is.

Totally agree. Rooney might have said it in the heat of the moment, but I expect he'll have to apologize for it. It was very arrogant coming from a rich player who makes his money from these supporters.

Here's the problem: team managers tend to play REAL conservatively during the Group stages at the World Cup. As a result, we get way too many uninspired games. Of course, it didn't help that the refereeing today s***** like a vacuum cleaner, as I sometimes say.

Unfortunately crap referees are as part of the game these days as silly haircuts and dayglo football boots. You should come and watch an English League Two match if you think this lot are bad.

Indeed. For those who haven't experienced the delights, think of the referees who aren't of the standard to referee poorly at the highest level let loose. And then add in silly haircuts and day-glo football boots just for good measure.

Blimey, England were abject tonight.

Joe Cole, your country needs you! (If Mr. Capello picks you, that is.)

BTW, why is Heskey playing? I just can't believe such a mediocre player getting into the English World Cup squad.
The term "donkey" springs into mind.

Heskey always seems to be liked by England managers. Gerrard and Lampard cant play together

Heskey is to England what Kuyt is to Holland. Probably a very positive person in the dressing room, works and trains very hard.
But, hey.. come on... not good enough for the "first 11".

IMHO, Crouch should always start for England. I am sure every defender is scared of his height. Crouch is a target for anyone, and that probably can give Rooney some space.

Gerrard and Lampard should learn to play together.
They are not rivals playing a World Cup.
Right, to answer some of this...
No one other than the England manager (whoever it may be) can answer the question as to why Heskey gets in the England team. As much as his supposed 'support play' is revered by managers, why play a front man who simply can't score goals? In games where we may only get a couple of chances on goal, should they fall to Heskey, you can put your life savings on the fact he'll 'pass' it to the keeper. However, should he actually be aiming for the keeper, he's the most accurate striker England have :p
As for the Gerrard-Lampard debate, this has been going on for some time. Both great players, but somehow not in the same team. What England lacks is a creative midfielder.
And as for comparing Heskey with Kuyt, well that's just silly, and Dirk Kuyt has a right to be truly offended!! For example, I can remember Kuyt actually scoring for his country, and he didn't take out his countries captain either!!!

I'm really excited about the US team now after that second half. Their leader, Donovan, emerged. He put the team on his shoulders and showed them how to play. Michael Bradley's also stepped up. After a so-so first game, he's realizing he belongs on this team and what he needs to do to contribute. A few minutes before he scored, he created an opportunity for a shot. It was a pretty weak attempt overall, but it really changed his play for the rest of the game. He's a firecracker and now the fuse has been lit. I'll be looking to see him getting very aggressive against Algeria.

The team will also benefit from Findley missing this next game due to his second yellow card. His performance to date has been awful. I love his speed and potential, but for now, he's an 80th minute sub who needs time to mature. And of course the play of Howard. We'd be 0-1-1 without him...

I think we're going to see a completely different squad from here on out in this tourney. This team's got a chip on their shoulder now after that nullified goal and their "us against the world mentality" should benefit their style of play. They've missed lots of chances but I feel they're starting to find that killer instinct that's been absent thru the first game and a half.

Let's go Yanks! Shock the world!

England suffer from the worst trainer.

It is unbelievable that Heskey plays, Crouch is reserve and Walcott is left home.

I was thinking about Walcott after the match today. He was pretty poor during club play this last season, but honestly he doesn't seem any worse that the players out there. In fact, England might have been able to make use of his speed (his main asset) - we haven't seen much speed out of the team at all.

England badly need a playmaker. They need a Scholes…..

Don Fabio tried to get Paul Scholes to come out of international retirement, a la Carragher. Apparently he agreed then had a last minute change of heart decided not to return.

Today's predictions:

Netherlands 2-1 Japan
Ghana 2-0 Australia
Cameroon 1-2 Denmark
