I'm really excited about the US team now after that second half. Their leader, Donovan, emerged. He put the team on his shoulders and showed them how to play. Michael Bradley's also stepped up. After a so-so first game, he's realizing he belongs on this team and what he needs to do to contribute. A few minutes before he scored, he created an opportunity for a shot. It was a pretty weak attempt overall, but it really changed his play for the rest of the game. He's a firecracker and now the fuse has been lit. I'll be looking to see him getting very aggressive against Algeria.

The team will also benefit from Findley missing this next game due to his second yellow card. His performance to date has been awful. I love his speed and potential, but for now, he's an 80th minute sub who needs time to mature. And of course the play of Howard. We'd be 0-1-1 without him...

I think we're going to see a completely different squad from here on out in this tourney. This team's got a chip on their shoulder now after that nullified goal and their "us against the world mentality" should benefit their style of play. They've missed lots of chances but I feel they're starting to find that killer instinct that's been absent thru the first game and a half.

Let's go Yanks! Shock the world!

i hope we do. i want the squad that doesn't give up the 5th minute goal. it's bad enough the refs are crap we don't need our defense giving any extra help. buddle and altidore should be given free reign up top to go out and create.

as angry as i am about our match i feel worse for the germans, who i wanted to lose but not that way. that ref nearly carded someone during the banner exchange! the whole tourney is beginning to feel tainted to me now....

though i suppose everybody could expect a lot of cards from that referee from spain
since his satistics for the spanish league are around 170 matches and more than 850 yellow cards which is an average of more than 5... ..which is pretty much the same as the average la liga ..comapred to the much lower card counts in the EPL or bundesliga

LEAGUE Yellow Cards Red Cards
Primera Liga (Spain) 5.04 0.37
Serie A (Italy) 4.24 0.31
Bundesliga 1 (Germany) 3.85 0.20
Major League Soccer (U.S.)* 3.62 0.27
Ligue 1 (France) 3.60 0.22
Premier League (England) 3.05 0.17

I read somewhere he had 11 red cards in 17 La Liga matches...that ref is a complete ***hole...

imagine a game with the english team of yesterday and todays holland team in the knockout stage ... it would very likely end 0:0 _after_ penalty kicks

Holland has had close to 80% possession and 0 chances?!? :(

People are accusing the B and C level teams of "parking the bus" in their half of the pitch...but the big nations aren't exactly attacking with any real determination (other than Spain and Germany)...

How much of the Dutch possession was in their half? Continue with van der Vaart in Robben's absence, team has no pace, big surprise.

Edit:

Quote by Jaffa Cake - Get your World Cup squad number trivia in now folks, there's never been a better chance. Anyone who mentions Cruyff's famous number 14 shirt has to do a forfeit, mind.

The Times today:

Argentina didn't use No.1 for the keeper in 1978, 1982 and 1986, allotting numbers alphabetically instead; Norberto Alonso in 1978, Osvaldo Ardiles in 1982 and Sergio Almiron in 1986

Cheers,
OW

Except Maradona was allowed to keep number 10.

I read yesterday that England have recorded more 0-0 draws than any other team in the history of the tournament. Make of that what you will...

I'm putting my money on either Argentina (in spite of Maradona's antics), Brazil or Italy to win it all. England has just too many egos on the team and Capello can't seem to control them....

looks like australia finally got their much demanded hands penalty

So where are your claims of it not being a penalty? Germans do it against Australia, nothing. Australia does it, it's not just a penalty but a red card too.

Like I said, this is a joke of a competiton.

He-he... just found this one:

It was a handball in the box. It is a red card.

Edit: ugh the Australian half time commentary whinging is the worst.

Not according to those here who claimed the German handball wasn't a penalty.

And Addy's studs-up tackle from behind was worse than Cahill's straight red card as well. It's clearly a red card under FIFA's rules... yet it wasn't. Why? My gripe is the selective inconsistency, not the rules.

because this _was_ a penalty ... the australian stood on the line and moved his hand towards the ball to block a shot which otherwise would have clearly got in

in the other game it was a cross .. mertesacker jumping in the ball somewhere on the side, with his hands close & in front of his body

to you obviously identical situations

edit: and i agree on the tackle of ayou deserving also a straight red card

and believe i or not there where another scene before where australia was already close to receiving a penalty and Ghana didn't get it

Maybe Australia forgot to send a sufficiently large brown paper bag filled with cash to FIFA before the World Cup, so they are now paying the price.

Reports are coming in that Anelka has been sent home due to a tirade he delivered at half-time against Mexico insulting his coach.

Edit: Further reports that other players may leave the French team today too.
