Like most, I don't like having a game for 3rd place. I understand all the extra ca$h involved but it's like putting the two semi-final losers of Wimbledon against each other...

OTOH, if the game does mean a lot to the players, then because of the fact that the pressure is almost off, the match tends to be more open and fun.

But I do recall our WC 3rd place match in 1998 against Croatia.... it was hell watching it. The players weren't particularly interested and nor was I.

EDIT.. man, it's raining pretty heavily, eh?

EDIT 2.. what a goal!!
Stands to reason.... Germany on paper the far better side. Also regarding these WC performances. But, on the day.... that's why we love sports.

Man, have you seen that goal by Forlán? Definitely one of the best players of the World Cup for me. Looks like Paul did not choose the right box. :D

Edit: awmazz, you beat me to it.
Edit: Seems that Muller beat me too. :)

Goalkeeper should not have come, and now it's back at 2-2!

Yep.. Forlan is one of the most impressive.

Must admit... makes our win over Uruguay the more impressive too. ;)

Goalkeeping really letting the team down. Put a Schmeichel or a Kahn there instead and none of those three would have gone in I reckon.

Germans third.
And, rightfully so. Germany have played so well throughout the tournament.

And... Paul is right again... "uh oh" for us....

Germany played "okay". The only really solid team (that imho played excellent football) that they met in this tournament, they lost against them. And that was Spain.

Also, LOL @ Mueller. People that think he is a great player should probably give up watching football.

opposed to those other great players which outscored him at this world cup.. really loved watching those .. didn't we ? ;)

going from 3. league amateur football to having a shot at winning the golden boot at the world cup within a single year ? _that_ is a story why people watch football

Spain heavy favorites according to Vegas Hilton

On the eve of the big game, Saturday night, 9:16 PM EST and Las Vegas Hilton Superbook has Spain as heavy favorites (-185) over Holland.

According to Hilton, Spain will play their ball control defensive game against Holland the way they did against Germany shutting down arguably the most aggressive scoring powerhouse of this World Cup tourney. Spain has great goal keeping and they have the media star of this tournament, Villa, with five goals looking to get more.

Holland will have to change up their game they have used successfully to this point and stay away from a midfield battle and shut down Spain's attack to win. Could Holland do it?

Vegas says three basic things can happen from what I gather.

1) Spain wins by playing the same game they did against Germany
2) Spain attacks with Villa and protects with great, unprecedented goalkeeping
3) Holland stops Spain's attack and somehow scores a goal or two

I would like to see the underdog, Holland, win this one 1-0 using a Villa stopping plan, and change up their game so much Spain cannot figure them out and somehow eek out a goal tomorrow. Spain would also have to believe the press and come in overconfident.

Personally, I am not on the same page with Vegas Hilton and I think these two teams are very closely matched and nobody is a heavy favorite.

Thoughts?

You've got to remember that a casino isn't setting the line based on what they think is going to happen, they're just moving it around such that there's an equal number of bets on both sides. So it's the people betting that are heavily in favor of Spain. The Hilton doesn't give a crap who wins the match.

FWIW, I agree with you, although I also thought Germany would be in the final. ;)

The bookies are right to a point.

here’s my own view of Holland.

1) They have not played anywhere near to their full potential by a long shot. Robin Van Persie has been poor, Robben has played well but only to about 60% of what he can do.

2) They are very well organised and are hard to break down. This is the hardest team that Spain will have to have played.

I could go on for ages but that is it in a nut shell. I personally think that Holland will win in 90 minutes.

Spain are the best team we have seen so far. They have not played particularly attractive football like the Germans have, but they do their homework for every team they play and change the team so they can beat them.

The World cup final has been poor for the last few WC’s and i think tonights game will be poor too because both teams will naturally be very nervous and cagey. BUT, it could be the exact opposite and be a classic, i don’t see anything in between.

I can’t wait for it, but i have fears it will be a 1-0 win and a very boring game.

Afternoon all, haven't posted in this topic for a bit, what with submitting thesis and packing most of my worldly belongings to move to a completely different city. What did I miss? Anyone like to give me a run down? ;)

So for the final time this tournament...

Today's prediction:

Netherlands 0 - 1 Spain (after extra time)
