Shades of the Champions League...Greece are the international version of Chelsea. :D

Once Greece bunkered down Russia looked totally out of ideas and almost halfhearted in their attacks. They became confused and frustrated.

A Greece-Germany quarterfinal looks likely. I have to think Germany will batter them.

Well well well...didn't see that one coming.

Me neither. After Poland missed all those chances in the first 30 minutes I was wondering if it would come back and haunt them. They were crap in the second half.

I didn't see the Russian match, but to go out after a win and a draw... that's the Scottish way to fail.
(apologies that's a re-hash of a joke I did on Twitter)

I'd say chelsea are the club version of 2004 Greece, the masters of scoring one goal however and hanging on by all means necessary.

Who would've thought that Russia after beating the Czechs 4-1 would be out and the czechs still in.

Greece is very lucky that the first tie-breaker is head to head game and not goal difference like in the world cup

If the Netherlands wins against Portugal they could go to the quarter finals with two losses and one win.
Some times there's just no justice. :(

not only the ukrainians, but a whole bunch of teams did this, which drives me absolutely crazy. I hope that this will change in the quarter finals, someone needs to take a chance from out of the box.

me too. kick in it right to the defenders shins.

That's only if they win by two or more and Denmark doesn't tie or win.

A denmark 1-0 win and Portugal 1-0 win would be sweet :p

a denmark tie could happen but a win would be a massive upset .. especially as if there is a team which never takes a game lightly it's Germany (i suspect they will give some of the younger fast attacking players a chance to shine)... also they want to win because "they could stay at their current camp in Danzig without traveling so much" :)roll eyes:)

edit: a germany - denmark tie and the netherlands winning against portugal would leave both NED and POR out

Looking at their previous games i wouldn't say it's a massive upset, then again how many times have the germans failed to advance from a tournament? i think Portugal has always advanced (most of the times just to lose the next round though XD)

New England Revolution 0-0 Columbus Crew

A pretty unremarkable game, but an away point is always an acceptable result.

In this case the rules favored the Greeks. Even though I never expected them to beat Russia, that is still a more likely outcome than Greece ever beating anyone on goal difference.

I suspect no changes in the line-up except either Höwedes or Bender in the starting lineup for Boateng. Podolski making his hundreth match in the national dress at age 27(youngest european player to play that many games), I still see a chance for Schürrle or Reus being subbed in though.

initially i have thought he would sub out Podolski since his last 2 games haven't been that remarkable but then i read that it would be his 100th game and that was out of the question

For me personally it would be an injustice if the Netherlands goes through to the next round.
Going through on goal difference and luck, we have to be better than that. :(

it would. funny that there is a chance. but won't they have to score like 5 or 6 goals to make it happen?

they are @ -2 GD.

i would't be surprised if they won. but getting through is going to take a miracle.

theoretically AFAIK a 2:0 would be enough because after all portugal get's -2 too as well ;)
but they are dependent on the germans winning, which by all means is a big humiliation for some

the good news for the dutch is that the germans haven't lost a non-friendly game in quite a while

If the Netherlands beat Portugal by more than one goal and Germany beat Denmark, the Dutch go through. All three teams save Germany will be level on points, with a win and a loss against the other two. In this situation, goal difference in the matches among the teams in question is used and that would give the Dutch the advantage.

I think.

Sounds right to me. I think the Dutch really have a decent chance of going though. But their defense is a major weak point, so they need to show a big improvement on the pitch. And needing help from Germany is definitely a humiliation for the Dutch.

I predict they will concede at least one and will need to score three or more to build the requisite goal difference to go through.

hopefully .. because it means that the game will be a more offensive oriented game up and down the pitch... i wouldn't be surprised if we see at least one red card today... Pepe is long overdue ;)

The Portugal-Netherlands match is really living up to expectations. Very open, very end-to-end.

The Dutch defense is atrocious, but the Portuguese have failed to take advantage, and the Dutch are getting a lot of chances themselves. There may be a lot of goals in this one.

EDIT: If the Dutch had Greece's back four they would go through. But with their defense....even if they score three or four they will probably let in nearly as many.

How bad can this Dutch defending get. Ronaldo just walks past the back line there and slots in.
