England are inferior to France, but better than Sweden. Can they get it done against Ukraine? The good news for England is that they've done alright up front without Wayne Rooney, and their 4-4-2 is working. The bad news is they defended badly against a fairly average (by the standards of the tournament) team.

England stand a good chance of going through, and Hodgson has so far been vindicated in terms of his lineup and tactics. Perhaps the best news for England is that young players like Ox, Carroll, Welbeck and Walcott are playing well overall.

Worthwhile I feel showing the front page of Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, who today predicted tomorrow's English newspaper's headlines after tonight's match. If you follow.

Admittedly a tad amusing but I am looking forward to seeing tomorrow's front page, Aftonbladet. :p

England have defended poorly here. But Hodgson's tactics and subs have been good. Great, if just slightly lucky, strike by Walcott.

Subs - 65 to 70 minutes - needs to look at replacing Parker as a given; Sweden were strolling through the middle. Maybe save Milner for that?

Defence; not Ashley Young's best game - needs to be stronger defending the ball - but he didn't know whether to stick or twist today because of Ashley Cole. On the right, I gave him a chance, but sadly Johnson is pointless ;) :(. Things will improve when England realise the opposition move at set pieces.

Fine Liverpool goal for the first, and good strike and improvisation for the others.

And the band is back :D.

Edit - Jaffa Cake - did Hart speak with Ibrahimovic after the game? :)

Cheers,
OW

Johnson was crap today. Against Germany or Spain he's likely to be eaten alive. He played well against France though.

Hang on – you mean to say that wasn't you and his Lordship on the comb and saucepans?

Not me. I sent Baldrick down but he's been siezed as contraband due to some obscure animal trafficking law.

was a really entertaining game but to be honest both sides showed terrible defending and capital mistakes at times: what the h... was the swedish goal keeper doing at Walcott's shot ?
on the other side: Englands midfield: it seems as england is best when they don't bother with it all

the game against the ukraine will be a real nail biter ... the ukrainian wingers are incredibly fast and dangerous and opposed to to france they aren't favoring a short passing game with dominating possession but rather like direct play and they are incredibly motivated ... apart of Portugal vs. Netherlands it's the game i'm looking forward to the most

Well done England, it was certainly an entertaining game, seen as an outsider.

Andy Carrolls goal was just fantastic.

Roy Hodgson substitutions were just what England needed, the youth is finally beginning to break out. He is not afraid to change, when he sees that it is not working out on the pitch.(unlike our manager Bert v Marwijk)

Walcott and Welbeck are certainly players for the future.

What impressed me so far about England is no mention of the WAGS.

the thing i noticed about the ukarinians was that they couldn't string together any good balls once they got within 25 yards of the goal. every attack died there abouts. the keeper made some stupid decisions on goal kicks. he had several that were won by or played back to the keeper the french.

Johnson was crap today.

Can't agree with this, I thought he had a good game and recall him making at least 2 critical challenges on Ibrahimovic when his pace came in useful.

Sadly, the sight of EBJT wading through treacle when tracking him back must have had Shevchenko drooling in anticipation (even with his loss of pace)

Ashley Young should have been taken off - don't think he contributed a great deal and carelessly gave the ball away in the dying seconds.

Still, great result and my knees are only slightly raw after leaping off the couch when the winner went in :D

woolyback,

Johnson - he has to make those tackles because his positioning is garbage. He also goes to sleep like Rafael. How was he for the first goal?

Ashley Young - thought he was below par, but Ashley Cole didn't do him any favours. At times Young didn't know who to close down because Cole was AWOL. WTH was the Chelsea defender doing playing that ball to a marked Young with seconds to go!

Cheers,
OW

not only the ukrainians, but a whole bunch of teams did this, which drives me absolutely crazy. I hope that this will change in the quarter finals, someone needs to take a chance from out of the box.

Poland have simply exploded out of the gate here. They are completely overrunning the Czechs, and Petr Cech looks dodgy once again. But Poland must make this pressure count with a goal.

Johnson played well for most of the match, and he did make a few great plays. But he made a couple big mistakes that nearly cost England the match. He's a good player but a flawed one. I'm not sure England really have better options at right back though.

As for England's choice of strikers - I think Roy should play all three options - start with Welbeck for sure. If Rooney is fit, start him, but sub in Carroll in the second half to stretch the tired Ukrainians.

EDIT: Greece are up 1-0 against Russia...as it stands both of those teams are through. Poland are being pinned back by the Czechs now. Greece are trying to bunker down and cling on for the final half hour. What a story that would be if the Greeks went through.
