This afternoon was ace.
We played struggling Watford, who naturally enough took the lead. The time wasting began with the celebration – all the outfield players had a big cuddle behind the goal, before strolling very,
very slowly back to their half for the restart. There then ensued general clock-chewing buffoonery from the Hornets every time they won a throw in or a goal kick, even after we got the equaliser. An away point? suits them fine.
Now, I've said before but generally I can take losing well enough – unless it's accompanied by the opposition time wasting and engaging in petty gamesmanship. Proper winds me up, so it does – the whole 'cheats prospering' thing. So needless to say I was a little miffed with these antics, and I wasn't alone.
Anyway, it carried on even as they took the lead again (with a similar 10 player huddle followed by a gentle and lengthy stroll back into their own half), and our equalising once more. The 90 minutes turned into added time, and the time wasting continued as they happily played things out for a point.
Then Robbie Koren smashed one in from range. Heh.
The place went mental, Koren did an odd little dance in front of us, several City players disappeared into the crowd and Watford were crestfallen. We certainly hadn't played well, but an afternoon's worth of frustration was wiped out in an instant.
This sort of thing is why football is ace, and don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. They probably like rugby or something.
