New York Red Bulls defender Tim Ream has completed his signing with Bolton Wanderers. I heard that his work permit has been opproved and the move is finished.

Jurgen Klinsmann has really stepped up the program to push American players to play in Europe. It was encouraged before, but now it's being made almost a condition of national team selection for many players. Klinsmann's long term goal seems to be the building of strong youth academies here that funnel young players into MLS to gain professional experience, after which they will go to Europe to develop their full potential. How this will dovetail with our college system is yet to be seen.

Ream has the physical tools, but his mental game is not there yet and he needs to build confidence. So Bolton is the worst possible place for him to be. :D

Poor McDermott with his shiny egg head!
On another note, apparently Jason Roberts has signed along with some Polish player from Derby. Cywka I think. Hopefully has the potential to be a good player, plus he's an attacking midfielder which is what we're lacking at the moment.

For some reason, every time anyone talks about Reading all I can think about is Dave Kitson. It must be the hair.

I think of Cilla Black (she was knocking off John Madejksi a few years back), Waitrose (a hell of a lot better than Cash Converters where sponsors are concerned, thank you very much ) and biscuits.

Reading (along with FC Zwolle) are also the acceptable face of blue and white hoops, as opposed to QPR.

Waitrose...free delivery on orders over 50 quid?...(does quick currency conversion) that would work perfectly for me, assuming their prices are competitive. Still, I actually enjoy cooking and gorcery shopping, so I'm not sure I want that.

And, bringing something in you posted in the thread on ghosts:

To be fair, this probably explains why the beer I've sampled at football grounds is so bloody awful. Cripes.

Crew Stadium sells horrible Budweiser but also Modelo Especial, which is decent. At one point IIRC they actually sold a local microbrew at the stadium, and it was good. But it all costs $7-8 a glass. Fortunately, match tickets are cheap enough that it doesn't hurt too much. For me, the 300 miles worth of gas to get to and from is what really damaged the wallet. :( And, compared to your average American, I live close to an MLS team!!

I tend to stay well clear of beer at grounds, if I fancy a pre-match pint I'll pop to the pub instead. Forest away was an exception, they had nice bottled beer on offer rather than over-chilled smoothflow stuff you usually get – no salt and vinegar flavour crisps though so they lose points for that. :p

Mind, this is an instance where I tend to find things are better at non-League level – the smaller grounds I've visited tend to have club houses where you can get a proper pint.

Meanwhile, it's FA Cup day today and I've got my ticket for our match against creepy Crawley. A rather unpopular outfit, our League Two foes have managed the remarkable feat of gaining promotion into the Football League without making any friends or generating any goodwill along the way, so I feel we have a responsibility to give them a good cuffing and send them back down south in humiliation to think about what they've done.

1-0 to Crawley, then.

Only an Englishman would complain about Budweiser! lol. Last time I was there they had Amber Bock on tap... that was pretty good.

And you lot aren't allowed to have a pint in the stands, right? You have to run out at the half and get 'em? Sad state of affairs that...

Best of luck to the Amber Army!

The Wednesday put the smack down on blackpool today.

UP THE OWLS!!

That's true, by design you are not able to see the pitch from the bar. You can't even drink at the front of the executive boxes at my club (Birmingham).

Go to Rugby or Cricket matches in the UK however and you are free to drink where you want.

Indeed. The thing is, I can come to the KC to see City and not be allowed a drink in the stands. But I could be in this exact same seat watching a rugby league match with a pint in my hand.

Not that I would be watching a rugby league match, mind. Just so we're clear on that.

Liverpool doing a number on the Manchester clubs. Might win two trophies this season whilst one of the Manchester clubs look set to win nothing.

What a month! -- watching all my teams hand victory to their opponents through stupid mistakes: Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl, the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, and now United in the FA Cup.

Creepy Crawley. I like it. :D

First off, I'm glad there were no major non-footballing incidents at the match (or at QPR for that matter). Skipping the handshake was probably wise given that there is a pending criminal case between Terry and Ferdinand.

Though the domestic cups aren't what they used to be, victory over both Manchester clubs is a huge morale booster for Liverpool, and it gives us some momentum going forward.

The match was on live at 3:30am for me, so I won't get to see it until the rebroadcast in another 7 hours.

You can also show up absolutely wasted though, which seems to be when trouble happens.

What is it about Kuyt? The guy's a phenomenon in derby games.

Dirk Kuyt is one of those players who can be very frustrating at times but you wouldn't dream of getting rid of him. He's not much of a finisher, though he does seem to have a real knack for poaching goals in big matches.

If your strategy requires high tempo/work rate on the wings, Kuyt is your man. He's good at stretching defenses and he always pops up at opportune moments. He's just not much of a goal threat on his own, and I question the use of him as a striker in the Premier League (Both Benitez and Dalglish have indulged in this), even though that's where he made his reputation in the Dutch league.

If reports are to be believed, on Thursday Liverpool offered a straight swap of Andy Carroll for Carlos Tevez. I really, really hope this is not true. Tevez might be a great striker, but I do not want him at my club. He is a a very expensive cancer, and his agent is even worse. Andy Carroll might be a flop, but Tevez....ugh. This reflects badly on the ownership and Dalglish as well if they were really contemplating this.

Possibly on course for our 4th successive defeat. Why do we only start playing after we're a goal or two down which in a lot of cases is likely too little too late.

EDIT: Thank heavens they woke up...at least for now. Geez.

More like, thank heavens Villa woke up... and realized they are still Villa. :D

Bans for Cabaye - stamp/kick - and Van Persie - elbow?

Manchester United's decision making in attack was poor, the cherry being late on when Welbeck chose to shoot instead of playing a simple pass to Evra - in the box and ahead of his marker. The substitutions and their timing  Strange, as a child I'd be 'gutted' about them losing in the FA Cup, now, as a big child, it's the league.

Good to see Campbell score and Barcelona draw.

Cheers,
OW

Even if Real win the league, Madrid is really beginning to turn on Mourinho. And Real is a club where you can win everything as a manager and still get the boot.

Both Henry and Keane returned to England with a bang, but then failed to find the net the second time out. Donovan has been MLS's best export this January so far, though he hasn't scored himself.

It still wasn't a surefire chance, but Welbeck probably should have passed rather than shot. But it just goes to show how, in a big derby, both teams are so amped up that cool, technical play often falls by the wayside. Man U's goal came after a nice exchange of passes. Liverpool's defense made few mistakes but United had a couple good chances.

The winning goal was longball 101, executed with lightning speed and taking advantage of Evra being on walkabout. Kuyt hammered it in nicely - he probably heard me complaining about his wayward finishing before the match. ;)

they would but for THE WEDNESDAY winning the FA Cup mind.... ;)

Doesn't help that we gave away a penalty in the 92nd minute to hand Blackpool a lifeline though :(

Although, by the sounds of things, they did have the most chances...

Everton away in the next round if we get through. I was hoping for Crawley away so I could go watch it.

Sadly, he's cup tied!

Bostock has made one appearance for Tottenham this season in the club's 3-0 win over Cheltenham in the FA Cup and is eligible to feature for the Owls on Tuesday against MK Dons.

Two Dutch players save Two English teams from defeat.:D

Both Dirk Kuijt, and Robin van Persie proved their worth again. I just hope they prove to be as good in June this year.

Before anyone remarks that is how Kuijt's name is written.

It looks like the Andy Carroll will be staying at Liverpool.
