And was defeated. Rangers appointed their own (and preferred) administrator, who are no doubt pally with the chairman. Shame the chairman wasn't pally with the HMRC like Vodafone were* when they got their £6bn tax bill reduced to £1.25bn. That's a saving of £4,750,000,000. Makes a mockery of the whole thing doesn't it?

So it's official, -10 points and that's us in second place.

*allegedly

If Rangers go into administration and still finish second, that's not going to be a great advert for the SPL...the clubs immediately below them must be furious at thta thought.

They won't finish 2nd now. 9 points between them and Motherwell after the deduction isn't much. Depends what players will go. If their training ground is going to be one of the key assets to be sold off, an upset in the thinned out squad's training regime won't help. The more the players become frustrated at the on-goings, the worse they'll play.

Celtic fans will be doing the conga right now, but deep down, they don't want their only competition to fade away. The SPL needs Rangers.

Hearts have just paid off their latest tax bill, but I worry that they're next. Dark days ahead of Scottish football.

But a club in administration is still barred from Europe, no? So at this point Motherwell would take that European spot.

Specifically, if Motherwell would get the Champions League spot (haha). 3rd and 4th get Europa league.

Edit: Forgot we now only have one champions league spot now, along with 3 Europa League ones.

I thought due to the coefficient drop we only get one entrant into the Champs League, no?. The SPL is on financial life-support, and bar the top two, doesn't offer much more in terms of quality than the Airtricity league, if Rangers are out of it, they can kiss any TV revenue goodbye, as well.

Celtic will never again be able to compete in Europe, even at Europa league level, they'll steamroller everything at home, and then get gubbed by some Romanian team no-one's ever heard of in the first round.

Any benefactors that stuck about will be off as they'll get less than nothing back for their investment other than grief about why the team's performing so poorly and can't keep a European place for more than 10 minutes.

Peter Lawell is somewhat in denial if he thinks Celtic will come through this unscathed.

It's really sad to see these widely-supported formerly proud teams staring ruin in the face. And Hearts. (wee joke there)

At the rate the SPL is going, soon those teams 'no-one's ever heard of' will be Celtic and Rangers.

UEFA's decision to expland the European calendar has made the competition too big I think - but it has brought in some interesting new teams. A byproduct of this is that old second-tier European football powers like Scotland, Belgium and even Portugal and the Netherlands are having to fight to maintain their presence in the Champions League.

There isn't a rule that bans a club in administration from European competition, however things need to be put in place such as guarantees and financial bonds, which a club in administration will find difficult to arrange, so it probably won't happen but they've got until the end of March to do it.

From what I read, Rangers would be banned from European competition next season if they don't sort out their problems.

I think read somewhere (and I can't remember where) that they'd have to have their administration wrapped up by March in order to avoid a ban from Europe. It sounds unlikely they'll be sorted out in time.

Well, nice to see Scotland's second biggest team progressing through the Scottish Cup. Extra time winner, but hope Hearts start to find form soon.

Scotland's second biggest team

Source? :p Certainly not by bank balance or league position!
It was nice to see Hearts pay the money they owe the HMRC so they are back from the brink.

Interesting to note that HMRC can't put Rangers into liquidation for the £49m, there is only one preferred creditor and that's Whyte. HMRC can only call in the administrators if it's unpaid Corporation Tax, PAYE or VAT (the £49m is neither), so yesterday's move was actually over £9m VAT & PAYE bill accrued since Whyte took over at Ibrox, which is concerning.

It seems the guy has a plan and he can't tell anybody what the plan is because it would show his hand, but jeez it's worrying.

Seems it was Craig Whyte's plan all along to get the club into this situation and get his money from being the creditor.

I heard Rangers have just secured a new TV deal. From next year, all their games will be shown on the History channel.

Wow, this story certainly proves no one's job is safe

Clearly a league record 43 games unbeaten doesn't count for much these days!

Although clearly the humiliation of being beaten by The Pigs was a major contributing factor ;)

Hmm. Didn't see that one coming at all.

After all, under Clark they made the play-offs for two seasons running, and are currently fourth in League One just outside the automatic spots. As Fizzy mentions he also guided them through a very long unbeaten streak which saw them go undefeated apart from the games they lost. :D

It seems more than a little odd to put it mildly – but I doubt he'll be out of work for long given that a number of higher-ranked teams have been sniffing around him lately. I wonder if that has anything to do with the decision...

I would like to say, Unfortunately, there's no time for sentiment because there's another Premier League relegation battle about to start in a few months t.ime

Best regards

i agree with the scottish having to face the same situation as other smaller second or third grade leagues

i think one of the factors which made it possible for celtic/rangers to stay up in the european championships was their series of either club winning the national championships

in austria for example with multiple different clubs winning the championships there never were such long streches and thus good financial situations
as soon as a club qualifies for higher levels of european football the double load on players ruins their league performance and thus next year no european leagues etc.

and clubs who have that single stand-out championship win are absolute chance less in the champions league (as seen by many german bundesliga winners)

Ugh. This is humiliatingly painful to watch.

Senior Citizens against boys.
