Sadly, thats all you need to neuter our fangs these days. Pocket RVP and all you're left with is a bunch of players dancing around the box 18 like headless chickens for 93 or so mins.

I have to assume that Sunderland approached the game this way to a certain extent. RVP is by far Arsenal's most dangerous player - if you can man-mark him out of the match you take a lot of pressure off your defense. Lots of midfield possession but not much penetration.

It's a shame Oxlade-Chamberlain had the own goal, he's one of Arsenal's bright spots. It wasn't his fault, just bad luck.

I doubt anyone blames The Ox, in fact it was commendable that he raced hard in order to get back and provide cover...something that can't be said for the actual rearguards.

In Uruguay, I hear that homophobia is permissible in polite conversation, so I don't see any problem. ;)

One a more serious note, I just watched Stewart Downing actually produce a cross that Andy Carroll converted for a goal! Shocking.

Brighton are giving the ball away much too easily and their defense is porous, but they have mounted a few very dangerous attacks and Liverpool are a little lucky not to have conceded a second goal. Not sure about Dalglish's decision to put Suarez in the wing but he is still influential, and not looking rusty at all.

EDIT: three own goals for Brighton, and that last one was painful to watch. Liverpool are cruising.

EDIT2: Dreadful penalty from Suarez. Zero power behind the shot, should have smashed it rather than going for the tricky run-up.

EDIT3: Job done, could have been 10-1. Hosting Stoke in the QFs...they have stymied us in the league before, I still feel we have a score to settle with them.

A £55M goal that was. Will be quite amazing if Liverpool end up doing the double.

Stevenage the story of the day tho...

Spurs somewhat lethargic today but credit to Stevenage for producing cup magic.

Dalglish called for Suarez to take the penalty, he should have let Gerrard take it.

A real upset. I'd love to see them grind out the replay.

Liverpool still need to win some tough matches to get to the FA Cup final, starting with Stoke, and I expect Cardiff to offer a tough test in the Carling Cup Final. We're nowhere near that 'double' yet.

Also, Dalglish needs to find ways to keep Liverpool's campaign for a CL spot on track. If we finish fourth and win two cups I would have to call it a quite successful season. If we win both cups (or just one of them) and finish 5th - 6th I'll be OK with it but not jumping for joy. If we fail to win cups or finish 4th there will be trouble at t' mill.

edit: meanwhile in Germany: Noveski from Main 05 equalized a Bundesliga record: yesterday he scored his 6th own goal in the Bundesliga
to make it even more comical: he scored it "against" Hoffenheim, just like in the last meeting of the two teams

Brighton and Hove Albion may be interested.:)

Lord Blackadder - agree re Roman supporting AVB over the oldies.

The Ox - did anyone put an arm around him after the own goal?

Cheers,
OW

Welcome! I'm a LFC supporter myself, though being American and living in Alaska it's hard to see matches.
It's just occurred to me that you should try and find yourself a local team to follow while you're exiled to the tundra, your Lordship – these fellows seem to be the closest. ;)

And hello bobbyjames! The lad's new and a bit raw, but I hear the academy coaches speak highly of him. :)

Oof, that's gotta be a chilly stadium to watch matches in. Cyrillic is such an intimidating script...it makes all Russian clubs seem like a bunch of hardasses.

I could always support Vancouver in MLS...they are a mere 2,000ish miles away - just a hop, skip and a jump really. :D

We win two cups and you think it will just be an "OK" season? are you mad? it would be an amazing season regardless of if we got a CL spot or not.

I would be thrilled just winning the carling cup to be honest, we are here to win trophies, but get 4th place.

Welcome! I'm a LFC supporter myself, though being American and living in Alaska it's hard to see matches. Are you a Suffolk native or a transplant from the Liverpool area?

I'm a Suffolk boy through and through, I was introduced to the ways of Liverpool FC by an Uncle who grew up in Liverpool and was a Red (he was the only football influence I had growing up so he moulded me into a Liverpool fan!). He took me and my cousins (his kids) to quite a few games when I was growing up and the love for Liverpool started from there.

And thanks for the welcome guys!

I get what you're saying. To be honest, I'll be thrilled if we win both cups as well. But finishing fourth is more important going forward. We need to get ourselves into the Champions League, and we need to be challenging for titles. The cup competitions jeopardize these goals, and while I want to win them, and think we can, we cannot afford to take our eye off those other goals. At the risk of sounding like an overdog, bandwagon-jumping big-club fan, Liverpool is a club that expects to be challenging for the top accolades, and given the money being poured into the club it would be unambitious to expect any less.

If we win both cups but miss out on the CL, it will cast a shadow on the cup successes, as great as they are. And I personally don't think we will make it into the top four.

Still, cup wins represent clear improvement over the recent past, and the side is arguably playing as well now as they have been all season. Suarez, Gerrard and Big Andy finallystarted a game together. So there is much to be optimistic about at the moment.

Great story! I only began supporting Liverpool in 2006ish, one of my brothers is an Arsenal fan and thus neither of us have watched our clubs win anything. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio though so I'm used to sporting disappointment. ;) I'm a country over club man so my top team is USA, and I am also a dedicated fan of my 'local' MLS team, Columbus Crew.

The last English hope in the CL (Chelski) is already playing itself out of the competition.

On another note. Cavani looks a player. Is it a pipe dream to want him in an Arsenal shirt?...yeah i thought so too.

*sigh*

Cavani is hardly a big surprise ...
the big surprise is that chelsea simply couldn't get their defense in order for 90 minutes ... and to be honest with the additional chances napoli wasted chelsea can be considered lucky

Ashley Cole single-footed kept Chelsea in the tournament because with a 4:1 it would have been _over_

a 2:0 at home is difficult against a counter attacking italian side but not impossible

Tie is all but over as far as i'm concerned. Although i hope i'm wrong. Chelsea actually played well today and still lost.

Their defence is far too leaky. Luiz forgets he is a defender and thinks he is Messi, Cahill was out of his depth and choked on the big day. Ivanovic is low on confidence etc.

There's simply no guarantee that Napoli won't score at the Bridge, in fact it's quite likely. Lets not forget they scored at a ground with arguably the best defence in the league. (City's Etihad). All they need is 1 goal...

I put a couple of quid on Napoli before the match. I think some of the Chelsea players have as well.

Indeed. The papers will now be creating an 'AVB in crisis' atmosphere, but as I said before Abramovich ought to stick by his manager. Chelsea's defense is creaky: Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Bosingwa does not sound like a Champions League-quality defense roster. Adding EBJT to the mix does not improve things either. As takao said, Ashley Cole was the lone bright spot in a bad Chelsea defensive performance.

True. Chelsea will have to put together a very good performance to win this tie. Keeping a clean sheet, even at home, will be very difficult.
