We shouldn't forget though that only played Napoli. Strong team but not all that. They better hope for Apoel or Marseille next round.

If they face Bayern, Real or Barca its all over. Spine-Trio or not.
True, but this is a team that couldn't beat West Brom, at least under AVB, and they looked more than up for it last night. You certainly have to wonder about the rumours of AVB not having the dressing room being true...

yeah. they seemed a bit resurgent. which, imho, really sucks.

i was hoping napoli could find the winner. oh well.

Frank Lampard smiled in the post-match interview last night. I could barely believe it.

What shocked me most about last night's match was when Ashley Cole got a (debatable) yellow card...and didn't even argue about it! What's going on!?

This was a Champions League match, and the players were amped up. Let's see if they maintain that attitude for more prosaic league matches.

i agree that it's barcelona's cup to lose but a lot depends on health of Messi, without him they are half the squad

Bayern would be playing "at home" in the final which looking at their home statistics could be quite a factor if they manage to get through

Milan are a notorious tournament squad and has lots of experience and will no matter what be tactically superb

Real has the best depth of all the squads but a lot depends if their defense can hold together and they don't get hit early with an opposite goal

IMHO those are the 4 most likely teams in the final ...

Bloody hell, Bilbao are embarrassing United all over the pitch.

I don't think I've seen a team press so hard for so long.

(Obligatory, "that's what she said")

to make this season even more absurd:
Hannover 96 just hammered Standard Lüttich with a much deserved 4:0 (6:2 total) ... the very, very average '96 still in the contest and manchester united already kicked out of both CL _and_ EL ?

to be honest i thought they wouldn't get past any other team at all, and now they are in the quarter final in their very first euro league stint

last year was their best Bundesliga result in their history with the 4th place beating their former best result (5.) from 1965(!)

This Bielsa fellow really knows his business. His Chile team were exciting and brave at the WC in 2010, and Bilbao are a very exciting team to watch. They executed daring tactics with total fearlessness.

One wonders if this kind of football is really impossible for the English top teams to adopt, because it require that players subordinate their egos to a clearly laid out and carefully crafted tactical plan. It requires extreme committment and total discipline alloyed with a dose of controlled creativity.

Now that United are out, will Mancini content himself with putting out reserve squads for the remaining Europa League fixtures (assuming they go through)? they'll be in the CL next season for sure so they don't need to push hard for a trophy in the Europa League, especially with the league title battle so close.

They don't have any really big stars either, though they are captained by stalwart USA defender Steve Cherundolo. He's also been a one-club-man for them since his college playing days, with over 300 appearances.

By being the least worst clubs in England.

I'd like to clarify something - I am a Yorkshireman and I am quite broad and if I say something it can be taken out of a little bit of context. I was asked about the heritage of the game, I would never want to offend FIFA or UEFA. I used a word which was, looking back, probably inappropriate but it is the way I am.

Link.

Apparently Dave Richards' defense of yesterday's outburst involves labelling himself 'inappropriate' and insulting everyone in Yorkshire. The man is on a roll.

The plus side is the EPL is more competitive. The down is that Real, Barca and maybe even Dortmund would win the EPL title comfortably.

I wouldn't be surprised if Huntelaar strike up some interest from the big english clubs again. He really is in top form this season. Hopefully he doesn't keep that up during the summer ;)

In CONCACAF Champions League news, Mexican clubs continue to have their way with MLS clubs as league leaders Santos Laguna mauled visiting Seattle 6-1 to dump them out of the competition.

More surprisingly, Toronto FC (showing an unexpected amount of fight for Canadians) went to the Home Depot center and knocked out the Galaxy. Toronto stank last season, so to beat the defending champs away from home is some achievement. Though, all they've won for their troubles is the chance to get wiped out by some Mexican side in the next round.

Columbus have a bye week this weekend, and will spend it facing off against three college teams in an attempt to prepare to host league newbies Montreal the following week. After losing our first match, supporters want to see the Crew put a few past what should be inferior opposition.

EDIT: ... A rather clean match for a Merseyside derby as well. No goals from our strikers yet again, though Suarez was influential.

...

Curse Suarez and all his little wizards. Next season I shall return and week my rewenge. Congratulations Mister B. Baaaaaa!;)

Manchester United; look at the midfield and tell me the joke hasn't reached Wenger/Arsenal level. If a bunch of wingers turn up in the summer:mad:

At least ACB were good to watch and there were two good goals. Also, no last minute hope;):)

Cheers,
OW

I feel I must point out that he's from South Yorkshire – we behave with far more decorum here in the East Riding, they're very uncouth around Sheffield way. Fizzy and pachyderm will back me up on this. ;)

At this rate, winning the BPL is going to be like winning the NIT college basketball tournament: sure, you get a trophy, but it only means you're the 65th best team in all of Europe.

I've no idea what you're talking about, but this might help!

Stay away if easily offended (Dave Richards should probably have that disclaimer too!)

Well there are 16,000,000 people here, that hope RvP, Huntelaar, and co. strike some form this summer.
