Apparently Bolton have scuppered plans for a shirt sponsorship deal with loan shark company QuickQuid after opposition from fans (and presumably those individuals inside the club with a modicum of common sense).

A lucky escape for the Bolton fans.

...

Don't see the point of companies like QuickQuid when there are places that'll convert people's stuff into cash. What's that name again?:p

Wearing glasses means never-nude, right?

Ned-Ger, red cards? De Jong's playing..hmmm...might pick up a couple of those...

But seriously, Happybunny, I see de Jong and Blind. They are affiliated with whom I think they are? 20:30, can see the second half, maybe.

This is the Netherlands Under 21 team.

I think that you might be mistaking de Jong.;)

I see in another FIFA ranking that both the Netherlands and Belgium have moved up.

Confession: I was joking about Nigel and Luuk, but Daley and Danny aren't related? I'll never forget (the hair of) Danny Blind. David Luiz pays tribute.

So, U21 - anyone's seen it? Me not, but from what I've read a deservedly, although bit lucky, win in the end for NED. Strange coaching decisions (roster in general and matchday in particular) by Adrion, Leno had a bad day and NED was playing with 12 A-players compared to 1 for Germany (Holtby).

If Adrion continues like that, he's got to see the boot! Buddy of Löw or not. Such a pity Hrubesch had to leave.

Oh, and Daley Blind is indeed the son of Danny.

Oh, and Daley Blind is indeed the son of Danny.

I did see the match off and on as I was Bar-B-Q ing.

The game was really of two halves like in the cliché. The first 45 minutes the Dutch were masters of the pitch. Jeroen Zoet had very little to do in the Dutch goal, with two goals from Adam Maher and Georginio Wijnaldrums. It looked plain sailing from then on.

Right from the start of the second half the German team was sharp as knives, something that had been missing in the first half.
Stefen de Vrij was caught in possession, and Jeroen Zoet gave away a penalty by bring down Lewis Holtby, Rudy scored from the spot. But the writting was on the wall the Dutch were now on the back foot firmly. The German team played by far the better football, and it was only a matter of time before they scored again. Kevin Volland scored a truly great shot, that left Jeroen Zoet helpless. It was now one way traffic as the Germans closed in for the win.
But totally against all the run of play a quick break, and Germany conceed a corner, Leroy Fer powered through a gaggle of players to head in, in the 90th minute.

This the first win for the Netherlands against Germany in U21 since September 8th 1992. It wasn't pretty but it was a win.

Oh I see that you answered your own question, Daley is the son of Danny.

Thanks, Hb. How is it going on in general youth wise in the Netherlands? Can we already build up high expectations re Totaalvoetbal? :)

Think we are playing now against Russia, quite doable, and then Spain, which I suppose are fav's to win the title. Hope I can watch a game or two someday.

Villa have slapped a £40m price tag on Benteke. Clearly want to hold a hard line and put off everyone.

Also, it seems Wenger is set to splurge £22m for Feilaini. Hmm...

Gazidis also says paying for Rooney would be no problem. Great, but spend it on someone better.

Happybunny - Strootman - is he a player along the lines of Carrick?

Cheers,
OW

Kevin Strootman is a product of the Youth team of Sparta Rotterdam.

Played for Utrecht, but never was happy, then moved to PSV in 2011 and on to International duty also in 2011.

He has been very good with PSV, but misses really big match experience because Dutch club teams no longer preform well enough.

He has scored 7 goals since joining PSV, for a central mid fielder it's not bad.

This from a Dutch Newspaper earlier this year (De Telegraaf)

When interest was shown by clubs from the Premiere League.

And although PSV coach Dick Advocaat would like to keep hold of Strootman, he admits a move away from the Eredivisie this summer should happen if he is to progress his career.

"For PSV it would be good if he stays, but for Strootman himself it's better to leave," Advocaat told De Telegraaf.

"He's the reserve captain of the Dutch national squad and PSV will make another step next season.

"This guy fits everywhere. He's a fantastic player because he knows exactly what his qualities are."

He added: "[He would be good for] Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but I think he's also good enough for Manchester City and Manchester United.

"Strootman is nothing less than Gareth Barry. He's a very useful player for every team. Especially when he's surrounded by better players."

He has a useful pass but needs a little to much time on the ball, he will get better. He is still only 23, he is definitely not a finished product, some work is still required.

I do hope that this goes some way to answering your question.

Yes, the Gareth Barry comparison sounds like damning with faint praise, but United could use a guy like that in central midfield. Don't see him becoming a superstar, but has a reasonable chance to outdo Barry at least.

Just watched Belgium beat Serbia by 2 to 1. It was closer in the end as Serbia staged a late come back.
This win put Belgium in the driving seat to win a place for Brazil 2014

Jamaica 1-2 USA

A big win for the USA in a meaningful match, though not quite a comfortable one as the winner came in stoppage time. On the plus side, since the loss against Bengium that I was subjected to in person, the national team's performances have been good. Also good was seeing another Altidore goal. If he can become a consistent goalscorer in this campaign it will be a huge boost for us.

On the downside, more sloppy mistakes leading to goals that could be avoided. The defense is still a bit shaky, though I have hopes it will come together over time.

Well, the Premier League had a big meeting a day or two ago and our membership for 2013-14 was ratified. Their website has been updated accordingly in preparation for next season...

Yep, it's the parent site the fantasy one's attached to...

Sitey-woo

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb.html

do they have the lower divisions as well?

wait, all the divisions have their own site i guess? again, espnsoccernet.com has all the leagues.

funny, but they kept listing dundee in spl div 1 with no matches played and a 0-0-0 record for the entire 2012/2013 season. foreshadowing..?

aahhh answering my own questions...

Yeah, the Premier League is separate from the Football League so two different sites. Reading our profile on the Premier League one, the section discussing our history doesn't cover anything from our 104 years prior to 2008, what with football not existing outside of the Premier League...

i was just looking at THE MASSIVE SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY program that you sent me. Thanks again!

Just watched Young Netherlands U21 win

Netherlands 5 Russia 1

The match started very slowly because the Russians were very defensive, and had at moments 10 men behind the ball. Georginio Wijnaldum scored with a long distance shot. The Russians lost a player to a red card (That was the game changer). Luuk de Jong scored from a header, and it looked plain sailing.
The Russians then really came out of their hiding and dominated play, they were dangerous and from a shot against the upright, Tsjerysjev scored. For a few minutes the Dutch were stunned, by soon set things right. Ola John and Danny Hoesen scored with a beautiful lobs, Leroy Fer scored with a measured shot.

It wasn't so much the amount by which this team won, as to the real team spirit that it showed.

After the terrible mess of 2010, that's what is so important.
