Can anyone offer up any explanation as to why Italy have abandoned their first choice white shorts and are wearing blue in this match, and Brazil have eschewed their blue shorts in favour of white?

Is this some bizarre new 'Fair Play' directive from FIFA? As well as swapping shirts after the match, do players now have to swap shorts pre-match?

The Fire have seemed to turn it around dropping Columbus 2-1

That was just humiliating. Killed off by Dilly Duka - though, for the record, I would not trade Oruro back for ten dilly Dukas.

Every game we have lost to Chicago has been winnable and I think a very good Columbus squad is being squandered by the manager.

From some message boards and facebook posts Crew fans don't seem to pleased with what's going on at Crew stadium. Anger at the coach and I thought I saw one of them post something about weak local media not willing to uncover scandal inside the organization. What kind of scandal he's talking about I have no clue. But it seems like the fans are getting upset with the lack of progress in Columbus.

Hmm. Half time between Spain and Nigeria, and when we go back to the studio the BBC bring us the news that Brighton have just dismissed Gus Poyet. For thoughts on this, we turn to the pundit on the sofa - none other than Gus Poyet.

A tad awkward, to say the least. Apparently Poyet only learned he'd been dismissed when the BBC production team told him Brighton had put a statement out.

The manager needs to go, and I think the stadium is due for a revamp. We don't have the money to build a flashy stadium like the big clubs do, nor have we been able to bring in a sponsor.

MLS giveth and taketh away. If we cant keep pace with the flashy big-dollar teams we could be in trouble. Columbus fans really have to worry about something that big-market fans like those in Chicago never have to even think of - we might lose our team. :(

Is this a worst case scenario, or are there rumblings that the MLS may do a relocation type thing?

San Jose lost their team for a couple years ( the league moved the players and staff to Houston) due to the failure of the team to build a stadium. They brought the team back as an expansion team. Two teams have started and then folded in Florida. There have been plenty of rumors about teams getting moved but apart from San Jose this hasn't happened...yet. However, up to this pout there have still been plans and space in the league for new expansion teams. Soon all those places will be filled and the only way to bring in a new market will be to move a struggling team.

There is absolutely no guarantee that the league could not simply drop the axe on Columbus if another Man City/NYCFC type deal shows up with loads of money looking to build a new stadium in a bigger city. It could definitely happen. MLS would trot out a million BS excuses but the bottom line is money and bums in seats. Unlike in Europe, the leagues in the US can and do move teams (as a Clevelander I've seen this firsthand).

I'm not sure how likely a move really is at this point but it is a definite possibility that smaller-market teams need to be concerned about.

I know quite little about these franchise stuff tbh (followed NBA for several years during Jordan's time = Raptors and Timberwolves joined the game. I guess the system is the same at MLS.)

What I never understood is the take away idea. Closed sytem - take the seat away, definitely not cool but ok, I could live with that. But the whole team/club? Sounds truly nightmarish. Even if I'd root for one of the big corporations, that still would take away so much atmosphere and charm - you may call it illusion I guess.

So fingers crossing for Columbus that means!

Just to be sure: you have some sort of lower leagues, right?

Without the franchising system, I doubt the sport would have been able to gain a foothold in the US sports landscape...but it definitely has it downsides. Some things about MLS are much fairer than Europe, so we have to take the good with the bad at this point.

A lot also has to do with the owners - if they want to get out of the business they may be willing to sell to anyone - not just someone who will keep the team in Columbus.

Yes, Division II is NASL and Division III is USL Pro...But were Columbus to lose our MLS franchise, we'd have to apply to join those leagues and it's not a guarantee that we'd be allowed in, especially if we are seen as financially unhealthy (which is not a problem at the moment).

Wilmington has a USL team, 3rd Division, and we actually lost our franchise a couple of years ago. Luckily, one of the former owners stepped forward to right the financial mess created by an ownership group that drove one of the leagues best attended teams into the ground. It sucked. No football for a whole summer. The team averaged over 2,000 attendees per game. For such a small city as Wilmington, it was a huge crowd.

Last year the team rejoined the league and made it to the Championship game, losing to the Charleston Battery. US Soccer is still in a fragile state. There is never a guarantee for next season. Unfortunately our society just hasn't fully bought in to the game. What's going to make all the difference are these kids I see at the games playing around behind the stands. As they go, we go. The US needs a signature game to really get the population at large to embrace it, like the 1980 Men's Hockey gold medal. In a way it's sad that's what it'll take, but if I'm being realistic, it's true. No pressure Klinsman. ;)

(Concerning Yesterday's Bayern press conference) I wonder, if Guardiola is just wise, not wanting to change anything or a bit lazy :D (just kidding). I am surprised, what a nice person he is, does not really fit with Bayern :)

twietee - :D good luck with the visa.

No idea, but to show how it's done:

It was worth rushing home from school for that one.

Good to see the England U20s are respecting tradition; after a 2-0 lead they managed to draw 2-2 with Iraq, and they are currently losing 1-0 to Chile.

Edit - Rene Meulensteen leaves Manchester United. :(

And England equalise.

Cheers,
OW

Anybody noticed Scolari's a Gene Hackman look-alike? Just kiddin'.

Not sure who I should root for...vamos, Uruguay?! :D

Meanwhile, Jürgen Klopp is the spitting image of our work's copywriter.

You don't know our work's copywriter obviously, but if you can picture a guy who looks just like Jürgen Klopp you'll get the idea.

Klopp before or after his hair extension? I once had a co-worker looking exactly like Jack Pallance. Ok, that isn't funny...well, actually it is. watching some Shane scene on youtube gives me a good chuckle.

Btw Brazil beat Uruguay 2:1, intense game but not really classy.

Edit: what's a copywriter anyway?

Tevez completes switch to Juve for £12m. Good bit of business that...if they can manage his ego that is. A 29yr old that can still do a job for any big team in Europe when he's not busy acting out.

Meanwhile City now down to two strikers with no new imports in sight.

He does it on the field (should he want to play) and makes Andy Carroll look expensive (again)

So, in Sheffield, they decided to play by the 1858 rules...

the Sheffield Rules allowed players to catch the ball, push players and score goals outside the goalposts.

Sounds like any other season in the PL!
