Doesn't matter. Seattle re signed their old back-up Josh Portis.

Portis was signed in Seattle's search for a backup quarterback to starter Russell Wilson after Matt Flynn was traded to Oakland. Expect Seattle to look to add another quarterback.

well there ya go...

ESPN is reporting that Gronk may need surgery on his left forearm which may endanger his availability for the start of the season.

ESPN.com said:
New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski "very likely" will require a fourth surgery on his left forearm, this one to remove the plate inserted in the arm in order to ensure an infection has been eradicated, two sources told ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

If another surgery is required, the estimate for a recovery would be about 10 weeks. Depending on when the surgery can be performed, which would be determined by whether the infection is completely eradicated, Gronkowski's availability for the start of the 2013 season could be affected.

I know I was surprised by pretty much all the top picks. I was googling a lot of these guys when the name was announced.

Tebow. Eh. It was bound to happen, I am actually surprised they didn't do it sooner.

The real question is, who if anybody will pick him up!

Believe it or not the Patriots are interested in him.

Never gonna happen.

Never say never.....

Just a reminder of how awesome and supportive I was when you went through this crisis. :( :p

This really stinks on ice. I don't even know what to say, but this makes for a very unhappy Queen. If he's not cut by August 2nd, I'm not spending any money on Patriots gear this year.

I also wish sometimes Belichick would resist trying to troll the league/outsmart everyone else. But I fully admit I am not exactly unbiased about this move.

You're right, I'm sorry. :(

As you know, we feel the same about him, so I do feel your pain today.

The most annoying aspect about all of this (as a non Patriots fan) is hearing how this is such a great move for Tebow and the Patriots. Perfect situation and all that. If he couldn't get a whiff of playing time on an awful team, with awful players, what can he really do to make any kind of impact?

I agree with Queen you that this reeks of Billy B trying to outstmart everyone else. I know Josh McDaniel has a hard on for Tebow, but even when he was on the Broncos he wasn't very good.

I heard he wanted to play on the same team as god. That's why he signed here. :D:p

Seriously though, I bet he gets cut before Sept 1st. Bill's just trolling the league and media.

And that's Mallet's number :p

Though I do think it would be hilarious if he did make the team and then shredded the Jets as a TE/FB with the occasional trick pass play. More likely though he'd be the guy handing gatorade to Brady when Brady gets back to the sideline after throwing a TD pass.

It's a perfect situation because he signed with a team that has a legit HOF franchise quarterback. Everyone knows Brady is the QB. There's not gonna be any QB controversy with Brady like there was when he was playing behind Sanchez. If he makes the team, it will be where he basically makes his own position as a sort of TE/FB hybrid that could throw a few trick plays. Remember when Kevin Faulk threw a TD pass to Brady? McDaniels loves his crazy ideas on offense.

Let's be honest. What team wouldn't be able to shred the Jets?? It wouldn't exactly be a huge accomplishment. ;)

That doesn't mean it's not enjoyable to watch. :D

I mean that butt fumble clip has gotta be one of the best highlights (or lowlights depending on who you root for) of the past few years.

I think what the Patriots are going to do with Tebow is what Denver should have done with Tebow. Let him sit and learn from one of the best in the game. In New England he will be mentored by Brady and will definitely improve if he focuses on preparing for the future. In Denver he could have done the same thing behind Manning. To me, the situation has the potential of being just like Favre and Rodgers in Green Bay. The Packers were patient with Rodgers and let him develop behind Favre. Now he's one of the best in the game. Another good example is Steve Young who sat behind Montana for several years. The Patriots have a great chance to do the same thing with either Tebow or Mallet. Having both on the roster doubles there chances of success that one of them will turn out to be a good QB when it's time for Brady to move on.

The pressure to "win now" is overwhelming in the NFL and that's why we are seeing a lot of young QB talent be put to the test immediately... Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, RGIII, Andrew Luck, etc.. Some of these players do well while others don't. However, I think there is still something to be said for letting a player develop under the direction of a veteran. When that veteran is a Hall of Famer it's even better.

It's okay, I was just teasing you. ;) I can handle the trash talk!

I think that would probably drive me up a wall if I wasn't a Patriots fan as well. Although it's a side effect of winning more often than losing in the last decade+. People tend to give the benefit of the doubt and just assume Belichick always knows what he's doing, although yeah, I'm sick of hearing about Tebow already and I still think he sucks.

See this I could not care less about. I just want to win, preferably without Tim Tebow. Sure, I want to beat the Jets, but their fans being suicidal doesn't really add anything for me. Beating them is enough. And having Tim Tebow on our team is not worth that kind of trade off for me. Not even a little.

The problem is that Tebow isn't just rough, he's a disaster as a QB. His mechanics are probably the worst I've ever seen in an NFL starter. He takes forever to throw the football, his throwing motion is horrific, he is not a good decision maker, and he's not accurate (on top of holding really asshatted views).

I can see maybe trying him at fullback or TE. And even then, I wouldn't want to make the gamble. The Patriots don't need this guy (do we need every TE in the league on our team?), or the million distractions he brings. You can't be a diamond in the rough if you've been on display in the 99 cent store for a year - and no one bought you!

You really do keep your humor about things.

Not as great as Welker not catching that pass or the Manningham catch. ;)

Ha, he deserved that one, not even going to hate.

Great analogy!

I hear what you are saying, but I think the fact that Tebow was cut by the Jets and subsequently not picked up for some time by another team is going to minimize the media circus and the fan mania that we are familiar with. I think people understand that this is most likely his last chance for a NFL career and the Pats are not bringing him in to be a starter. Belichick sees him as a project and will treat him accordingly. No fan in their right mind is going to argue for Tebow to compete with Brady for the starting job. He was signed for his potential and to see how he develops. Of course, if Brady goes down with an injury everything changes, but I don't think that's why he was signed.

You're spot on with your analysis of his QB play. He's awful. Terrible mechanics. Low football IQ. But he was a Heisman trophy winner so he definitely has some athletic ability and he's 6'3' 240. Bill loves his guys who are versatile, and he could probably be decent as a FB/TE. Defenses would have to account not just for his ability running the ball but the fact that he can throw it (not well, but better than almost anyone who's playing FB/RB/TE in the league) regardless if he actually has any pass attempts or not. Bill loves the chess side of football, and if he has to make opposing defenses prepare for the possibility of Tebow & Brady running options, trick plays, etc. when they already have to prepare for Brady, Gronk, Hernandez, Amendola, Edelman, Ridley, Vereen, etc. then it's worth it.

I can already see the play now where Tebow is lined up at FB/HB behind Brady, Brady takes the snap, pitches it over to Tebow who bootlegs out then hits Gronk/Hernandez on a cross route for a 20 yard gain. ;)

As for distractions, I've never liked Tebow but the distractions aren't his fault, it's because the media is infatuated with him. Tebow (as much as I dislike him) is a good character guy. Bill has never been someone to let the media control his team. He'll give them monotone 3 word answers, they'll call him an arrogant douchebag, and everyone will get on with their day like normal.

But hey, who knows what will happen? Belichick knows more about football than almost everyone on the planet, so he gets the benefit of the doubt. The more I have time to think about this move the less I hate it. If he sucks, he's cut before week 1. If not, maybe he contributes.

edit- Oh, and for Moyank24, he's wearing #5. ;)

Circus act. Yep, that's what Tebow was when the Jets got him, a circus act. You said that. :D

Not Tebow, the Jets whole team is a circus act. Still is. It comes from the circus ringleader Rex Ryan. That guy can't control his locker room.

Rex should take some notes from the master on how to avoid the circus:

FOXBOROUGH – Bill Belichick, in his usual demure tone, deflected question after question about the use of his new quarterback, Tim Tebow, in his first press conference in more than a month and a half.

Standing in front of a throng of media members from all across the East Coast, Belichick said the popular quarterback – who will wear No. 5 – will do whatever is best for the team.

"He's a talented player, who's smart and who works hard," Belichick said.

He repeated some variation of that over eight minutes before leaving for the first practice of Patriots minicamp.
