Something tells me they wouldn't have released him so abruptly if he was only facing obstruction charges...

What a waste. All that talent and potential. So young with an almost limitless future and yet he can't shed the thug life. My condolences for the victim and if proven guilty Hernandez can rot in jail for decades.

Really sad. I am continually surprised by the utter stupidity of people to waste the gifts, talent, and good fortune they receive in life. I hope Odin Lloyd's family gets justice, however that may play out. And now the Patriots must move on.

I feel a little superficial talking about football when a guy died (so forgive me), but it's mind boggling to me how the Patriots went from having the two best TEs in the league to desperately needing depth at that position. We're going to have to find some talent before the season starts.

The Jake Ballard move is looking more and more like our saving grace.

Well, Hernandez is no longer a pro football player, so I don't see the problem with going back to talking about football in the football thread.

I hope Gronk going on the PUP to start the year will end up being a good thing and will help him stay healthy later on in the season. As long as Gronk and Brady are healthy for the playoffs, they'll be in good shape. Bill made some good moves on defense this year and I'd like to see them focus on trying to beat teams on both sides of the ball and not just having a high-scoring offense and trying to outscore their opponents. The Pats defense showed some flashes of this last year, hopefully they can build on it. I'd like to see a return to the defense-first teams that won us those three championships.

EDIT: Hernandez is being arraigned right now.

Charges: murder, carrying firearm without license, possession of a large capacity firearm x2, possession of a firearm without an FID card x2.

Hope they lock him up at MCI Norfolk so he can still hear the cheers from Gillette when Brady throws a TD to the Gronk.

My stomach dropped actually hearing those charges. This is horrible and surreal. I thought he'd be an integral part of our team for years to come. One of my favorite Patriots, easily. Really in disbelief, even though I kind of knew it was coming.

And I feel sad for those who looked to him as evidence they could escape their low beginnings and become successful, even if it was just through sports. Feeling a bit more jaded today, myself.

Wow, very sad to see. A young man who had just about everything in the world he could want, and then just throw it all away.

You think Gronk will be healthy enough to play this year?

He'll be on the PUP to start the year but he'll probably come off between weeks 6-8 and play the 2nd half of the year.

The infection in his arm was cleared up and apparently has healed up fine. The back surgery which is supposed to fix a problem he's had for a while is supposed to be 8-12 weeks recovery. Once he's healed up from that, he'll hopefully be good to go.

Agreed. Sadly, most of the time, it's once a thug, always a thug... And listening to this arraignment, he's just that. They didn't specify what degree the murder charge is but by hearing this testimony I have to imagine it's 1st degree.

Really crazy to hear them mentioning all these places that are 10 minutes from my house.

EDIT AGAIN: The prosecutor just mentioned it's first degree. Asking to be held without bail.

"@GlobeMetro 6m
Prosecutor: When he gets home, Hernandez walks through home with gun in hand -- and it's captured on video."

One more edit: Judge orders Hernandez held without bail.

Wow, if that is case this is going just a we bit farther than obstruction.

Just read he has been charged with Murder. Yikes.

I thought they said he destroyed his home surveillance equipment. How could they say they saw him walking into his home with gun in hand ?

He lives in an affluent neighborhood so his home definitely wasn't the only one with surveillance cameras.

From what I heard in the arraignment, they have a LOT of video surveillance proof from many different businesses and probably some homes along the route he took. It's literally only a couple of blocks from the murder scene to his home anyways.

From all the details at the arraignment, sounds like his buddies threw him under the bus.

Yup. The details given in the arraignment indicate they came from someone who was there. Additionally, there seems to be loads of video evidence, including at the industrial park where Odin Lloyd was shot.
