Whoever said that football folks haven't got their heads to think straight....was actually right! This thread just proves the point as an exception to the rule.

Milan, Madrid, I don't care as long as it's in Italy.

Funnily enough, all my American and Canadian friends who have mentioned the name change all think it's a bloody stupid idea.

Meanwhile, Cardiff's owner Vincent Tan has piped up...

Since Hull City changed their name to Hull City Tigers last week, fears have again surfaced that the Bluebirds will be the subject of a name change.

Philosophical Tan said: “I read a bit about Hull City's name change. They are back in the Premier League and I admire their owner Assem Allam for what he has done.

“One thing that I read that I liked is he says there are so many teams with the name city.

“There is Hull City, Leicester City, Cardiff City, Bristol City – everyone is called City.

“Who doesn't know Cardiff is a city? Who doesn't know Hull is a city?

Christ on a bike.

The irony of course being that it isn't.

Liverpool win and Mignolet saves a penalty. A good start to the season, especially against Stoke, who have stymied us so often inrecent years. the defense did not exactly inspire a great deal of confidence (apart from Mignolet), but cautious optimism is the order of the day for Reds fans.

Christ on a bike.

That just illustrates how owners like Tan (and Allam) obviously look at the team from a totally different perspective from the fans. It's a very business-oriented outlook first and foremost. :(

Arsenal are going to really feel the pressure from Spurs this season. Tough match for them, but they created their own problems today it seems.

Man Utd are in cruise control already...perhaps the start of another unconvincing yet seemingly inevitable title procession? I'd like to think not, with Mou and Pellegrini involved.

Indeed, kind of like Newcastle-upon-Tyne - although we don't have Tyne United of course. ;)

That said, our city is always referred to as Hull and it's quite rare to hear it referred by its full name.

and yer football team is: Kingston-upon-Hull City Tigers... ? :p

@ tweetie:
Hertha - Frankfurt = 6:1
Bayern - Frankfurt = 1:0 (only 1, hehe)
---> I like that! :D

(I know, it's just the beginning, but the Bundesliga seems more equalized for now, than last year. Good to know, Bayern will be the first, but there are some that will at least keep their points low. ;) )

I saw a summary of Wolfsburg - Schalke (4:0) and I like that Wolfsburg got Gustavo. Poor Schalke, it's a pity seeing were they came from and they are now, since the second half of the last season (While I was very interested in Draxler's play at the beginning of last year, I more and more get the impression, he has lost something along the way. Not sure what...)

-----
I know Mainz is not more than just keeping their head just above the water line at the moment, but I found it funny, that they really had the guts to not move and pass back the ball to their goalkeeper all the time, while the people were booing. It was really Tuchel's strategy to save energy on that hot day by not moving for the first half. Of course this is boring, but there is something to it, that makes one smile, that they really do it. (wonder, if that can not be seen as stalling time, "Zeitspiel").
Well it payed off, sort of (2:1).

Swansea played well at times. Take away Van Persie and who do they have? Nobody. Average team. So much of their success was because of Fergie. Not to mention Ferdinand, Vidic, and Carrick are aging.

what i really find hilarious is how bremen has now already managed to win both games 1:0 while playing absolute rubbish ...

is it karma for all the fantastic games of the past which they lost ?

also the impression from the first hoffenheim game is carrying over: they really upped their game after being close to relegation. Going back to their offensive attacking style is suiting their squad way better.

In Dutch football it is becoming clear that the whipping boy this season is NEC. They have negative goal deference of 10 after 3 games.

Last night PEC Zwolle put 5 goals through their net.

PEC are second in the Eredivisie as of this moment, games are still to be played today.

PEC first real test will come in week 5 as they then face Ajax.

Here in the Netherlands we only have one major club owned totally by a foreigner. Vitesse so far no calls for a name/colour of shirt/ or badge change.

Actually, we nearly became Kingston-upon Hull AFC after the war.

As we emerged from wartime hibernation, the then owner preferred the new name and also wanted us to play in orange shirts with blue trim. Luckily such madness never came to pass and we stuck with our traditional name and colours - after a season of playing in blue though, as amber dye was too pricey due to rationing.

Indeed, the mighty Blauwvingers have got off to a fine start.

We were in Zwolle on the opening day of the season, unfortunately though we arrived too late to make it down to the ground to witness the humbling of Feyenoord. I did manage to pop to the ground later in the week to pick up a shirt for my collection, though. :)

So, I think the title is a 3 horse race between Man U, Man City, and Chelsea, and then there will be another close competition for 4th.

Spurs did not look hugely convincing but they got the result. This will be a good year for Tottenham to pressure Arsenal for that CL spot.

What about the term "Humberside"? When did the newspapers start using that? Does anyone in Hull actually use that expression? It seems (via Wikipedia) that the phrase is fairly recent in origin...

Today in the early kick off Ajax beat Feyenoord, by two goals to one. These used to be one of the classic big matches of the season, but in the last few years they have not lived up to expectations; this one was no different. :(
Feyenoord have lost their first three matches, and there are already voices in Rotterdam calling for the head of Ronald Koeman.

I stated earlier that NEC have a goal difference of -10 in fact it was even worse they really have -12.

FC Twente finally found some form and beat Utrecht by six goals, giving the home fans a real cause to celebrate.

Thought this was a bit harsh, Jaffa!

Some Person Texting BBC Sport said:
Cue the yearly hysterical over reaction to how good Chelsea are. Hull look serious relegated by Xmas candidates.

I'll be rooting for Kingston-upon-Hull City Tigers Association Football Club, don't you worry ;)

(Do you think KUHCTAFC could fit on the socks?)

Silly Person Texting BBC Sport - criticising others for hysterical over reactions to one match before swiftly following it with one of their own. Heh.

A bit of history...

Hull has historically been part of the East Riding of Yorkshire - Yorkshire boundaries have essentially been in place since Viking times. However, back in 1974 the Government did one of its boundary change things, and East Yorkshire was merged with a chunk of north Lincolnshire to form a new county - Humberside.

Suffice to say, it was an extremely unpopular move on both banks of the Humber. We Yorkshire folk are very proud of our identity (as are Lincolnshire types) and campaigns were in place from the start to have the old county boundaries restored.

Humberside was finally abolished in 1996, the area north of the Humber reinstated as the East Riding of Yorkshire and those south of the river returned to Lincolnshire. The name now only lives on in a handful of organisations - Humberside Police and our local BBC radio station Radio Humberside, for example. Locals certainly don't use it to describe the area but the media don't seem to be aware of the fact that Humberside was abolished the best part of two decades ago and still regularly use it - much to our irritation. Indeed, Martin Tyler used it a couple of times in commentary today. Bad Martin Tyler.

This thread is just descending into me complaining about how things are named, isn't it? :D

Happybunny - @OptaJohan (Opta's Dutch Twitter feed) tells me that this is Feyenoord's worst ever start to an Eredivisie season. Blimey.

That is absolutely correct.
But what is more worrying for Feyenoord fans is that the team have just been played off the field. It is like they all have a collective death wish, it is like watching a slapstick movie sometimes.

Sunday 25 August is going to be very important match against NAC. If they lose then I do think that Ronald Koeman will get the sack.

Swansea played well at times. Take away Van Persie and who do they have?

Take away Van Persie and United still wins 1-2 on the back of two Welbeck goals.

They definitely did not field their strongest possible XI yesterday, with no Rafael, no Nani, and no Kagawa available. Central midfield still looks dodgy; is Cleverley not United quality, or not cut out to play United's style of football? Even a "meh" signing like Fellaini would improve the central midfield quite a bit, probably enough to make the difference in the title race IMO.

^ Probably true, but RVP makes a big difference even on his off-days...nobody fears Danny Welbeck the way they fear van Persie, and he draws defenders easily, which creates chances for others.

Nothing's really changed in terms of who's in line to win the league, of course - it's going to be one of Chelsea or the Manchester duo. But Chelsea are arguably stronger (not just counting Mou) and Man Utd are weaker. The big story of the season will be fourth place. One of my Arsenal-supporting friends just texted me to say that he's already resigned to Europa League football next season.

Interesting bit of history...leave it to the London-based media to continue referring to a place with a name that is not only locally unpopular but no longer official anyway.

Chelsea looked strong today. But why was Koren on the bench? I thought he was a starter.

Nani can be brilliant but can also be quite poor at times. I don't think Kagawa has played his best yet. They do need a midfielder. But it isn't good that they still need Giggs. He'll be 40 in a few months.

If they struggle at any point which they very well could then we'll see what Moyes can do. I doubt that he will motivate them like Fergie could.

He started, and was captain. ;)

Serves me right for trusting the Guardian's match facts. In my defense, I was out sailing today so the transmission my have gotten garbled as it found me out in Lake Erie.

The match report wasn't helpful either, it was all Mourinho this and Special One that....on the upside, you don't have to go to Stamford Bridge again this season. Nobody likes going there.
