What would Honecker have said?

Speechless - fortunately. :)

Doesn't really belong here, but I see most people look at the colourful murals/graffitis and forget that people got shot there. Lots of people and not long ago. The whole thing is a bit of a lost case since the wall got translocated, demolished wherever it stood in the way of development except this shortish area which was a wasteland (very welcomed at that - Bar25 anyone?) until some years ago. Now it faces the grandezza known as O2 World. Mostly a tourist attraction - but unquestionable one to be preserved.

Anyway, haven't seen yesterdays matches but heard Leverkusen shot (no pun intended) some innocent bystanders during penalty shoot out!? :D

Vague about todays match - Juve lacks important players, but never underestimate an Italian squad is what life taught me, so...

Sahin still injured :(
It really shows.

Looking at Google Maps, the isolated stretch of wall looks as though it was moved to create the great approach to O2 World.

My biggest 'East/West jolt' in Berlin was coming out of the U-Bahn at Samariterstraße on Frankfurter Allee. It was like time travel.

There were some horrible, horrible penalties in that shoot out. Most unTeutonic.

I don't think Arsenal did a thing wrong yesterday - the mistakes all come in the disaster at the Emirates. All they had to do was not give up 3 away goals and they would surely have progressed.

Nah, you're totally right of course. In this case it's a) not even proven he touched anything - let alone hammering out big chunks (10cm deep!) of concrete for a TV-show (wasn't shown). Which brings me to b) I'd blame the TV guys (public broadcaster!) for setting this up in the first place. c) It is my understanding that this part of "The Wall" isn't even part of the original - which you can see in the background.

Not going to argue about this since it is 100% stupid, I just found it somewhat entertaining (and the way he hammers looks funny imo :)).

Btw. I have the highest regards for your profession!!! As an architect I tend to destroy stuff before I play around but other than that nothing but deep affection! :D Jk, I have to work with you guys a lot and they are about the most relaxed and mostly really knowledgeable sp?) folks. Nice profession! :)

No worries, I wasn't criticizing you - and I'll bet you're right, the TV people who set this all up are largely to blame. His hammering technique was pretty funny as well.

BTW, I specialize in industrial heritage and Germans are really ahead of the game in that area. The US is way behind in preserving our industrial past. I'd love to tour some of your old coal mines and the big sites in the Ruhr. One of my colleagues is an architect and I've always been fascinated with the ways they envision space and the adaptive reuse of old buildings. Way cool! (now I'm getting nerdy, I'll stop before people get bored :D)

This brings up interesting questions - how much of the Berlin wall is left, and how much do Berliners actually want to preserve?

Do visit! The Ruhr area is indeed amazing regarding conversions. Some pretty interesting new buildings too. But as usual, I'd say it's still not nearly enough done, and it's not even a question about money in the first place but about doing the smart thing (as usual)..it's a shame how truly amazing 70s/80s buildings gets demolished no matter what..the usual blind spot. Lots of different interests as usual. But you'll be used to that. Big business, much money to be made..

Ehhrrr..yep. Dortmund plays football in the Ruhrgebiet!

I of course have no way of really knowing how Berliners think about their wall.

But up until last year they used sell these postcards with a piece of the wall in plastic.
IMG_1092_zpsmnu919np.jpg

I had friends who were there in Berlin in 1990, and they took pieces of the wall as large as laptops.

Arsenal played a good game, but just couldn't make up for the mistakes in London.

I see from the news that Dick Advocaat is going to try to keep Sunderland up.

RE: Leverkusen (another Ruhrpott team ;) ).

It's a shame. Would have felt so lucky for them. I felt even more pitty for Kießling, having been on the bench and then this (I don't blame him), you could see how deeply affected he was himself.

Challanoglu is the new Özil. Someone they have to take care of his psyche, he seems to be a very sensitive guy. Also a cultural thing of shame, when failing (and self-pressure in return) seems to play a role there. I didn't expect him to be that bound to that sort of things until I saw him in "Das aktuelle Sportstudio" on ZDF. The journalist (Kathrin Müller-Hohenstein) was concerned about him, getting injured or killed in an insident at a hotel in turkey. He was at the room of a friend of his. Then a fromer close friend of his friend came in and pointed a gun on them. While the interviewer was asking, because sche was scared he could have lost his life. He felt ashamed, that he had not done anything against the person with the gun and excused "I know, everybody will laugh at me now, but I was somehow laying on the floor and couldn't do anything". (The interviewer also had to try hard to get him talking about it, anyway. She was all over the "they could have killed you, how terrible" and he was all about "shame" not realizing that the average person would have thought, that it is wiser to not try anything, if someone points a gun at you, and would have been totally on his side.)

Well, you could also blame Müller-Hohenstein for not being sentient enough for having a feeling for a cultural background (and the selfportrayal of the role of a man). The reason that he ended his former deal with an attestation saying he has depressions and can't play and then making the fans angry by making a contract with Leverkusen and suddenly being able to play again. Well, perhaps the doctor wasn't that wrong...

PS: I have a close link to the Ruhrgebiet per my mother. It is incredible how green it has become (well, but so have a lot areas in Germany. Same as how clean the air has become). And you totally have to love the people there.

The wolves are back in some areas as well :D

Well, I'm a (West-) Berliner so the wall as it stands now does little for me compared to what happened back then and how I experienced it as a young'un. :) How old is Kalou btw. - was he even alive back then? Probably had different problems while growing up.

Wish I could see both games today. Everybody cross fingers for Dortmund though, will take a while till you see them playing CL again.. :D

Who would Ramsey have started ahead of?

Ozil. Then play Cazorla who completed more passes in the middle and isn't as afraid to shoot. Ramsey can make those runs no one else makes for Giroud which is why he scored.

Koscielny didn't give Berbatove or Moutinho a kick, Monreal (and sometimes Bellerin) provided the only width to Arsena'ls play. Everyone else was cutting in and trying to walk it in through a screen of bodies. Ramsey came on and helped Giroud.

I think The Big Ö had a better game than Santi, although that's not to say that Ramsey *might* have proved a more effective starter than either of them.

Özil's pre-pre-(pre?)-assist to Monreal for Ramsey's goal was bleedin' majestic.

Can't help it but Dortmund fans singing 'you'll never walk alone' always feels so corny.

Go go go!

I thought he gave the ball away one time too many times.

On another note. Seems City are going out too. Depressing week for English football.

The 2014-2015 Football Thread

He, and Arsenal, certainly had a sloppy first 15-20 minutes. I'm listening to the Citeh match and it sounds like a 1-0 drubbing.

Despite being a Liverpool fan I bear Everton no ill-will - but I am relieved they just got knocked out of the Europa League. Now there is zero chance they will win it and steal a CL spot from the fourth placed Premier League finisher.

the 22 Colombian players for the friendly games this month have been assigned, James is out but Falcao is in

Man City get a freebie after a second minute (bungled) sending off against West Brom. They'll get a win for sure, though they're still remarkably useless for such an astoundingly wealthy team.

EDIT: Terrible defending from Spurs but Harry Kane remains on fire. Giroud is banging them in at the moment too, and Arsenal look set to push Man City fairly hard for second place.

EDIT2: Today's West Ham v Sunderland match is one of those games that need to be mentioned every time someone describes the Premier League as the best in the world. Utter. Crap. West Ham will be happy after winning it with a late goal, but anyone who bothered to watch it just lost 90 minutes (plus stoppage) of their life that they'll never get back.

Figured it'd be a dull affair. One team ravaged by injuries and the other can't buy a goal. Opted to spend the time getting a new car stereo for myself instead. And lo and behold i was right.

Can Kane do it in the big games though, disappeared against United...similar argument for Giroud.

Massive game tomorrow. Neither can afford to lose.

tomorow is 'el clasico' (the classic) cant wait, it will get intresting. will have my real madrid hat and jersey on... too bad James is out for this one

What is there to say? :(

Goodbye fourth place, goodbye Stevie G. What a **** end to the season. No Crew game this weekend either, so it's pure misery for me.

Gerrard seems to have develop a knack for messing up in key games.

United were really good to be fair but 'Pool just didn't turn up and then Stevie G made things worse.

Top 4 chase isn't over yet. United have tough fixtures coming as do Arsenal.

Liverpool have arsenal next

Not just Gerrard's petulant stamp, but Skrtel got away with one on De Gea at the final whistle. He needs a retroactive ban for that. Liverpool really lost the plot emotionally today. [Edit: can't forget about Balo. His own fans saved him from a second yellow.]

Guess I picked the right time to complain about LvG, right before the penny finally dropped. Hope it continues. Just keep playing Fellaini and Mata together.

That second goal by Mata, simply breathtaking.
