If Academics mattered at all to the NCAA, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama would be in a lot of trouble.

I appreciate the greatness of the SEC in football, but their academics outside of TAMU and Vandy leave a lot to be desired.

There. I said it.

You said it but almost everyone I talk to who went to such a school say exactly the same thing, including athletes themselves. Those schools want to win and at ANY cost. To be a Div I coach you have to pretty much be a second chance Jerry.

The Heisman Trophy finalists have been announced:

Amari Cooper - WR, Alabama

Melvin Gordon - RB, Wisconsin

Marcus Mariota - QB, Oregon

I think that it will go to Marcus Mariota. What say you?

I think it's neck and neck between Gordon and Mariota. If Gordon was on a team like OSU, going to the playoff, I think he would get it. But Mariota has been way more valuable to Oregon and he lead his team to the playoff. Mariota gets it, or it's the surprise of the year.

Gordon, while having some RIDICULOUS video game stats in certain games, also got shut out in a handful of others. Mr. Consistent Mariota, who is long overdue for a Heisman, edges it out on that alone.

Cooper is probably the biggest MVP for his team, but Mariota is the best player. Either way, the voters can't go wrong. After a few years of questionable on/off field character, there's no flags or smoke behind any of these three.

Couldn't agree more. These three are great Heisman candidates, though I'm sure that Mariota will win.

Not that it could happen, but I think that Blake Sims embodies the spirit of the award. He did everything asked of him for several years with no complaint, from playing running back to backup quarterback. Very few people gave him much of a chance before this season started, yet he's been instrumental in getting Alabama to the playoffs while setting and/or coming close to several school QB records. Al.com ran a nice article about him last week - worth a read.

Mariota hands down.

His reward will be being drafted by the dumpster fire known as the NY Jets.

I suppose he could go to the Titans too.....but I bet the Jets lose out. And the Raiders and Jags already have QBs. I think Winston goes to the Bucs.

Amari Cooper to the Raiders. Melvin Gordon goes toward the end of the first round. No one wants a RB high in the draft anymore.

How about Bryce Petty?

3rd Stringer behind Griffin. Backup to Nick Florence.

Two years as a starter: 7,505 yards; 58 TDs; 9 INTs; 62% comp; 160 RAT

And only the second QB in the history of the Big 12 to win back-to-back Conference championships.

I'm really hoping the Cowboys draft him in the second/third round. He's a project that will need time on the bench. Romo has two years left on his deal and Petty will be ready by then.

That would be a dream.

LMAO, probably so.

But Raiders could use Mariota. This may sound weird, but I think the Raiders will bust out a winning season next year. At the same time the 49ers will go less than 8-8.

The Bay Area seems to have one good football team at a time and probably why Raiders and 49ers will never meet in a Super Bowl. Our best bet still remains a final title in baseball with teams from the Bay Area or at least in same state.

I think the Raiders have their QB. Derek Carr just made Colin Kaepernick look like a high school QB. Give him some help and you've got something there.

I mean, does anyone know who Carr throws to? Or who he hands the ball off to?

They need a big time receiver. Cooper fits that bill perfectly.

Look for the Jags to go defense - maybe Shane Ray?

Kap is so hot and cold, but of late he's on the decline. I don't know if the 49ers will have him as starter next year.

I said it when it happened - they made the wrong choice giving up Alex Smith for Kap.

I've never been a fan.....thought they'd miss the playoffs this year and it looks like I'll be right.

Wonder who they'll go with? He certainly isn't the worst starting QB in the NFL. Even if he is in the 18-25 range.....are there going to be any available in FA or through the draft where they'll pick that are better?

I don't know.

And frankly, I don't care. Die hard Cowboys fan so it always warms my heart seeing the 49ers look like crap ;)

Just thought up an answer to my own question.....

Brian Hoyer.

This year the 49ers won't pose a threat to Dallas. But Dallas is still viable for this coming postseason and it's a fight between you and Philly for your division but possibly for control of NFC driver's seat.

It looks like a good (read: bad blood) rivalry you have there. I can see either you or Philly going all the way and it must be interesting in a Dallas-Philly game and probably as intense as a 49er-Seattle game. If my Niners were to go again to the NFC Championship Game, I would be far more scared of you or Philly than Green Bay or Detroit. I used to hate Dallas with a passion but these days I simply don't care as my energies are to cheer my team on, and with what little energy I have left, to then root against Seattle. Now that the Cardinals have snuck up as best in division, I find myself completely exhausted.

Lol - personally, I don't know Dallas has a realistic shot to go all the way. Defense isn't quite good enough.

I think the Packers look unbelievable. If they get a bye and home field, it could tough to unseat them. I don't think the Cardinals are a threat.

We'll see though. It could very well happen that the team that doesn't win the NFC East could finish with 10 or 11 wins and not make the playoffs. NFC is crazy that way. I do think Dallas wins this week though. And we have a good shot at 11-5, outside shot at 12-4.

The last few weeks will be interesting indeed. Just excited to not be 8-8!

If you like Sims, how about Boykin from TCU? ;) Not trying to rub it in, Baylor fan, but he's just like Sims. Switched positions, stepped in a moment of turmoil, and has bounced back to have an outstanding year this year. Maybe still a little rough around the edges - another year in the offense will help refine his game.

that's the major difference between sec and big10 schools. Sec little to no academics, big 10 has public ivy league institutions

No huge surprise that the Heisman goes to Marcus Mariota. Big night for the UofO and the states of Oregon and Hawaii.

Hmm I mean both schools are great, but I'm certainly under the impression that Texas A&M is a superior academic institution to Florida.

Are you referring to student academics in the football and other athletic programs or to academics in general?

I believe he is referring to overall academics, the B10 has quite a few AAU schools, whereas I don't think that is the case form some of the SEc schools.

I know that people tend to think that SEC schools aren't much academically. But Alabama at least is fairly highly rated. It will never match the top-tier private and public schools, but it's been ranked in the top 50 public universities for years, and its law school is rated #23 in the country by U.S. News and World report, just behind USC.

UAB, another school in the UA system, is also ranked highly, especially in health-related programs. (That's the one that had its football program terminated recently which could be the subject of its own thread!)
