Why is this surprising? This model will likely start at $869

The question is other than making more money - what makes this special? Just about any Android phone is OLED, has edge to edge screen and features wireless charging
Android, Apple and outliers compete. If Apple/Droid even slip, Windows and Blackberry are right there waiting. Some people can only see style. Some people can only see 3 numbers: GHz, Mem, Pixels - As if that really defines an entire highly integrated system.

But, since you asked, here are some things that make Apple competitive. Privacy. Filtering of malware. Premium Aesthetics. Direct manufacturer, walk-in, live-human support. System wide integration.

Remember when high end droid phones were selling you plastic bodies printed with faux carbon fiber or option 2 the Hello Kitty limited edition? Thank Apple. Remember when Apple was sure the 5 was the only form factor you wanted? Thank Samsung. They are all in very fierce competition of every tiny detail. And we the consumers benefit. I don't condemn the competition. I want Windows and Blackberry to push their competition and succeed.

Its fine if you prefer Android. Be aware. They are FORCED to excel.

Um, everyone, study your history:

http://time.com/3398919/apple-first-portable-macintosh/

$6500 price tag for the first Apple portable in 1989.

This is not new for Apple. They have ALWAYS charged a premium.

And (historically) because of their prices I have not always bought Apple. If I think that the total package- ease of use, features, reliability, and realistic length of usable life justify the cost then I will buy it. But even then there's an upper limit. As much as I would like to buy a Tesla I cannot really afford to. There's a price point I shouldn't go over and I'm not sure exactly where it is concerning a phone but, for me, a $1000 plus cost iPhone definitely exceeds it.

Apple are fast becoming a luxury brand for rich dbs.

Apple can prove me wrong by releasing an iPhone 8 with a camera that is at least as good as the competition from Samsung and Google.

The iPhone 7 and 7+ have two of the best cameras out there. The 7+ and Pixel are pretty much neck-and-neck. Some say the Pixel is a tiny bit better for low light shots but after this last Apple nighttime shot ad campaign, I'm not sure.

In the real world one is reading The Cat in the Hat the other War and Peace

There is a reason why the iPad Pro is running a garbage mobile OS with Mickey Mouse Apps
Hmm, I rather continue the conversation with facts and numbers instead of allegories.
Good day.

Good. Premium price means they can put more great tech in there. If you want a less powerful device, buy a cheaper model.

Problem? All the so called great tech in there are pretty much old tech anyway.

It is not like OLED screens aren't in market or edge to edge display is some rarity.

Does any of this really matter? If Apple is making a bad move my charging so much for a phone, people won't buy it. If people buy it, then they know what they'r doing. Talking about how bad this will be is useless, not giving them your money is an actionable result.
It's the same trend whenever there's a new iPhone rumor.
Before release, people will be complaining and whining.
After release, suddenly everybody is wondering about their pre-order status.
It's an interesting behavior.

If this comes with 4GB of ram, I could possibly consider it. Would last me probably 2 years before it gets "sluggish." However, if it's just going to be a 7S with a better screen... definitely no.

Imagine if it was made in the good 'ol USA though. It would cost as much as a 15" Macbook Pro.
I would pay significantly more for a made in USA variant

Are you kidding me? The Pixel destroys the iPhone on image quality due to it's larger sensor with larger light collecting pixels. It's not even close.

If it is something truly amazing, I may consider changing my iPhone 5S.

If it is just for a better camera, better screen and faster cpu it is not worth it to update...

Well see, for myself and many others, our jobs require high end computing power, so there will never be a day when a phone or tablet can replace our computers.

Last I checked, iOS doesn't even have a file browser in place, so its pretty far away from being a replacement for a traditional computer. At least Android trust its users enough to let them use the filesystem. I could see Android phones being more competition to computers.

Still, on the original argument, I've got a couple ARM powered Raspberry Pi computers, and though its made massive strides in performance, the ARM architecture is still underpowered for a desktop computer environment.
As I said "It starts at the bottom. Don't compare your high end computer and be deceived." But I respectfully suggest you are doing exactly that, and can not see past a few years.

Never is a really long time. Look into what is going on with nano-tech and quantum computing. Molecular level, multistate "transistors" have been built in laboratories. Its no longer science fiction. Its just choosing a model and developing the manufacturing tech. Computers that are smaller and use less power than your phone, yet are orders of magnitude more powerful than current NSA super computers are about 20 years out. But one breakthrough could put these or an intermediate technology in your phone in ~10 years.

What do you think Intel is doing in their labs with ARM chips creeping up on them? Where do you think DoD research budget goes? With white papers being published there might already be working prototypes for the intelligence community.

The customers don't have to pay it. Yet they do - many stand in line for hours to do so.

I am guessing you're not a shareholder. :)

And yet Apple has done just that. And other companies are now trying to follow. *cough* HP Spectre *cough*

Heck, Apple wasn't even an innovator in this area. Bang and Olufsun have merged fashion and electronics for decades.

Only a matter of time before Gucci starts making cases for MacBooks, iPhones and iPads and bands for Apple Watches.
Nope, I'm not a shareholder. If I was one I would push apple to regularly update their product cycles and invest in the future to not fall behind like they do now (long term investment). If I had enough shares to have a pressuring vote I would even demand they keep investing in their volatile ecosystem and products that properly don't make that much of profits in for the ecosystem to be complete. With no screens and routers and out of date desktops it's a shame they mention the mantra: you'll see this only coming from Apple.

Ok, now I'm curious. A better screen, camera and CPU, maybe along with more memory, are pretty much the improvements any smart phone, from any manufacturer, makes from year to year.

What would you consider a truly amazing feature? I've already commented that for me, personally, a plus $1000 phone is too expensive, but I do like what I'm hearing about the iPhone.

Good day.

Not sure who considers synthetic benchmark as a "fact" when it comes to real world task performance. But sure, Have a good one... If you in The NorthEast - enjoy the snow day ;)

because this is a "rumor" website so why not? you must be looking for a website call, "MacFactsOnly.com"

The issue is that people are responding to them as if they are facts, not rumors. If the response was "If this is ends up being true, I would not pay that much", then fine. But when I made the comment, a lot of the responses were as if Apple had issued a pricing chart for a device due out tomorrow.

We have GOT to stop rewarding this company for new colors and updated cameras. It's not enough. Where is that world-class innovation? I know, how about at the next Apple event instead of cheering and blowing our brains out, let's all get up at leave mid-way. Expect more from a company who thinks you're nothing more than a sheep

There's no chance that the ($1,000) iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance

This phone won't be about market share. That's what the 7s will be for.

Sorry my sarcasm was overlooked. My statement was Balmers quote regarding the $500 iPhone in 2007. I just changed the price.

Maybe one day, but not in the immediate future. In my sig, 7 is wife's phone that just replaced her broken 5S. She wanted to keep the 5S, but it died. My 6S+ replaced my iphone 5S, I skipped a gen. The SE is my kid's phone, a present by the grandparents for Christmas, I didn't buy it. Laptops are old, the iPP is actually a product I am happy to have as I love it.
Right now I am thinking about giving my wife an Apple watch for her b-day, and I am not in the market for anything else. Of course a lot will depend on the iPhone 7S/8 and its pricing, as I am in the Apple Upgrade program (I wounder how it works with such an increase in price).
So, in conclusion, you'll pay what Apple ask. If you aren't interested in the completion, Apple has the monopoly.

You're not alone, my wife is the same. She hates her iPhone 7 but when she broke it recently, she went out and spent another £799 on a new one (the broken one is still in the car).

Apple have created an incredibly loyal customer base that go so far as to actively hate the competition. They'd be foolish to not raise prices and capitalise.

On iPhone, yeah. I might not give it up. As for Macs, I am already thinking about going for a Surface, but again I am not in the market for it yet. I am 100% sure that I won't buy a new MPB (unless I get a serious raise lol). Time will tell.

What I am curious to know is if apple thinks/noticed that people are moving from a 2-yr refresh to a 3-yr refresh timeframe. This would explain the price increase, and it would justify it for most people.

if this iphone will not be a revolution with totally new ios UI and new iphone design, with the best screen, edge to edge and some great features i will change to samsung s8 for sure. over 1000€ for a phone that is like the same as the samsung s7/s8? maybe?
we'll see.
