I imagine the masterminds at Apple look at the spreadsheet and study how they can squeeze the most profit out of the iphone, ignore the rest of the lineup or give them marginal attention. A shame they can't see the bigger picture.

Meh. I just bought the 6s plus 128gb contract free from apple for $750. Works great, no issues, screen fantastic, has a headphone jack and has more cases to choose from. Sticking with that until iphone 10.

Apple are fast becoming a luxury brand for rich dbs.

Jobs believed in premium products that, while expensive, were actually a good value for the entire package. The further Apple stray from his philosophy the less interesting I find them.

Edit: This is the sort of BS I believe Jony Ive wants to compete with: Vertu Signature Touch.
All about bling and status.

Apple can prove me wrong by releasing an iPhone 8 with a camera that is at least as good as the competition from Samsung and Google.
It hasn't stopped me from being an apple customer for the last 20 years, but this is how I always perceived Apple as a company.

This IS a departure from the Jobs Apple.

When the iPhone 4 came out that had a retina screen, all glass new design, FaceTime camera, etc...the price of the phone was the same. The same phone for everyone.

Not really thrilled with Apple releasing a 7s/plus and then another special model on top of that. More fragmentation like with the iPad line. Horrible.

Apple of all companies realizes that the iPhone has killed a lot their mac sales. In a sense, the iPhone has replaced the mac for lots & lots of people. The original plan of SJ to entice people to buy a mac + iPhone + iPad isn't working anymore. Lots of people live in the iPhone Plus world only now.

That being said.... The future iPhone is going to only get more & more expensive as Apple tries to squeeze more & more out of their customers.

But my question is:
What is Jony Ive going to do when the iPhone finally becomes a slab of glass? There will be no more room for refinement. Only thinner (break) and faster.
He may very well design himself out of a job.

So Samsung can put an OLED display into their flagship phones and still compete with Apple on price, but when Apple puts an OLED display into their phones, prices go up? Or is this some silly ploy to differentiate their lineup just like the $100 difference between a 16Gb and 32GB iPhone?

It won't be $1,000. It will be $40 per month. To many consumers they won't even look at the actual cost, just the monthly payment.

This isn't to say it's worth $1000, just that few are actually paying that in one lump sum. Also that is the high end of the price spectrum. Most people are good with the 32 and 128GB models.

Not to mention once the phone is halfway paid off, you can turn it in and upgrade again to a new phone.

Apple's 2017 iPhone, which is expected to feature premium parts and radical design changes, could cost "north of $1,000," reports Fast Company, citing a source with "knowledge of Apple's plans."

Rumors suggest the upcoming iPhone, which may be called the iPhone 8, will feature an OLED display that's more expensive than traditional LED displays. Other improvements, such as an increase in memory and wireless charging functionality may also drive up the price. It's not hard to imagine the iPhone hitting that price point when the 256GB iPhone 7 Plus is already at $969 in the United States, and previous rumors have also suggested it will be a "premium" device.

Fast Company's source also confirms some iPhone 8 design rumors, describing the device as "something like a smooth black monolith, with few visual interruptions to its sleek design." That jibes with rumors indicating Apple design chief Jony Ive has been aiming for an iPhone that looks like a single sheet of glass with the Home button and Touch ID fingerprint sensor located under the display.

The Home button technology is still "evolving" according to Fast Company's source, but Apple's goal is to get it done in time for inclusion in the iPhone 8. Physical buttons, such as the volume button, power button, and mute switch could also be eliminated, a rumor we haven't heard before, and the iPhone 8 is said to include a "far bigger battery."

The source also claims Apple is working with Lumentum to develop 3D sensing technology that will be used in the device, but did not provide details on how the feature will be used. The iPhone 8 is expected to include a glass body with a stainless steel frame for durability, and while Fast Company suggests the display will measure in at 5.8 inches, rumors disagree on this point. We've heard everything from 5 inches to 5.8-inches and don't yet have a clear picture on sizing.

With Apple likely planning to position the new OLED iPhone as a high-end premium device with a premium price tag, the company is also rumored to be planning to introduce two more affordable devices with LCD displays that are closer in design to the existing iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, measuring in at 4.7 and 5.5-inches.

These two devices may feature similar design changes, such as a glass body, but will have pared down features like an LCD display to keep the price down.

With such major changes expected for the 2017 iPhone, which marks the 10th anniversary of the device, rumors have been running rampant for months, making it hard to suss out some of the exact specifications of the device, including display design, screen size, and wireless charging functionality.

As we creep closer to September and start to see the first part leaks, we can expect to have a much clearer picture of what to expect from the first significant iPhone redesign since 2014.

Exactly. With the iPhone upgrade program and carrier incentives for trade in's with their own upgrade programs, the perception of paying a $1,000 in full is highly unlikely for most.

Carriers are smart enough to allow the consumer to utilize the payment system to Upgrade to the device of their choice. They want you to upgrade to sell you the latest device. And by offering affordable payments, most see this as an advantage, but it does have its short sides as well.

If Apple does do this, there probably isn't enough OLED displays to go around. Hence the need to "fragment" their lineup rather than launch with insufficient quantities and give up sales for nothing.

It's just business at the end of the day.

For as many here that are saying that they won't pay extra for an iPhone 8 "Premium", you can bet your bottom dollar that 3 months after it goes on sale, there will be a front page article here touting that Apple reports the new iPhone breaking all records of previous iPhone sales...who needs a crystal ball anyways? ;)

I highly doubt this is true honestly.

Either way I wouldn't pay out $1000 for a phone, not worth.

Here it comes guys. The iPhone Pro.

They're going add another tier to the vertical. iPhone Pro Plus > iPhone Pro > iPhone Plus > iPhone > Old iPhone (SE/C/whatever they call it next).
I think that his year it will be referred to as Apple edition phone. Next year same design and better specs iPhone 8.

I'm fine with the top spec 5.8" 256GB or 512GB priced over $1000. I hope they also offer a 5" version with the smaller bezels.

I've always said I would be fine with a $100-200 more iPhone Pro where Apple throws all of their amazing, bleeding edge technology into. Wouldn't mind if it was a tad thicker like the MBP vs MB so that it has a bigger battery. To scale up this new tech, if it is a new kind of OLED or mLED display, true wireless charging, extra RAM, dual cameras on the smaller model, longer battery (maybe that new battery tech that lasts twice as long?), then they can't scale up as much, meaning a higher per unit price.

And Apple's customer base for the iPhone keeps getting even more narrow...
Why? They will most likely offer updated versions of the 7 for people not willing to buy the most expensive model. Everyone doesn't buy the ceramic watch. Some get the sports version.

It will hopefully cost considerably more. I can't stand to see all those peasants having the exact phone as me.
I think it will. Well north of a grand

This is a trial rumor. The pricing will come in at $950 and Apple will say its a revolution to bring the new iPhone in at that price and under everyones expectations.
This will happen in 2018

I have no problem with that pricing for a premium phone.

For those that do, there are a lot of other phones out there. Pick one that makes you happy and meets your requirements.

I'm glad I got an iPhone 7. By the time I'm ready to upgrade (probably about 3 years), OLED will have hopefully matured and gotten a little cheaper to make. Plus I don't like buying the first generation of a new technology. It inevitably gets improved upon rather quickly at the beginning.

EDIT: predicting OLED-gate when the iPhone 8 is released

A $1k dollar price point. They need less courage. I'd like a cowardly lion price point, its JUST A PHONE!

I'm not defending any drastic price increase (in fact I am very much against it), but it really isn't just a phone at all! It's a small computerised comms device that is capable of doing 100's of different things.

I'd wager that in most civilised countries, the smart phone (no other term for it) is the most important and vital possession to most people. I want Apple and their rivals to make them better, more powerful and to include new advanced features. But we must understand it comes at a very premium cost!
