If Apple does do this, there probably isn't enough OLED displays to go around. Hence the need to "fragment" their lineup rather than launch with insufficient quantities and give up sales for nothing.

It's just business at the end of the day.
This is exactly what I think is happening. Apple cannot procure enough oled panels for a flagship phone this year. The cost has nothing to do with the price of materials. It will cost more because it will be perceived as sexier and it will be in very short supply.

I don't mid supporting a company that can deliver superior products and awesome innovation. What I do mind, is supporting the worlds wealthiest company that doesn't seem to innovate anymore.
Bye Apple, Hello Samsung!

So you choose to buy into a brand that copies and rips off the innovations that company that in your opinion doesn't innovate any more? Ok.

$1,000 US = $1,300 CAN

Plus 12% tax = $1,456

For a phone. That's getting to ridiculous territory.

Looks like I'll go to Craigslist and buy a second hand 7 plus this year.

Phones should cost $800 off contract with a usable storage amount.

don't worry they will release a cheaper version without all the fancy features that is more like an iPhone 7S. Then if you want to newest it will be more expensive but of course supplies will be constrained due to poor yields on displays
Here it comes guys. The iPhone Pro.

They're going add another tier to the vertical. iPhone Pro Plus > iPhone Pro > iPhone Plus > iPhone > Old iPhone (SE/C/whatever they call it next).
I wonder if we could see a lineup like this (excluding lower-end devices), using what happened to the iPad lineup with the introduction of the iPad Pro as a guide:

2016:
iPhone 7 Plus — 5.5" LCD — 16 nm A10 SoC — $769 base
iPhone 7 — 4.7" LCD — 16 nm A10 SoC — $649 base

2017:
iPhone Pro — 5.8"? OLED — 10 nm A11 SoC — $849-$999 base?
iPhone 7s Plus — 5.5" LCD — 16 nm A10 SoC — ≤ $769 base
iPhone 7s — 4.7" LCD — 16 nm A10 SoC — ≤ $649 base

I held out and didn't get the iPhone7...but at that proposed price, I'm considering just picking up an iPhone 7 and calling it a day. That is going to be crazy expensive here in Canada

Better things to do with my money.

It is a miniature computer so I'm not surprised. I'm going to just upgrade to the 7 plus from my 6s plus. Starting to see that the newest model always has bugs and accessories(and iPhone supply) take months to catch up.

A $1k dollar price point. They need less courage. I'd like a cowardly lion price point, its JUST A PHONE!

Not saying I want a price hike (or believe this rumor), but... it is definitely not "just a phone".
I think you know that. Depending your age- you may remember the days all notebook computers were in the $2,000 range? It is on par with the power of a typical laptop, with the added benefits of GPS, a top-notch mobile video/still cam, biometric security, etc.
When I look at all that it makes the (current) price of $650 seem more palpable! =)

I'm not defending any drastic price increase (in fact I am very much against it), but it really isn't just a phone at all! It's a small computerised comms device that is capable of doing 100's of different things.

I'd wager that in most civilised countries, the smart phone (no other term for it) is the most important and vital possession to most people. I want Apple and their rivals to make them better, more powerful and to include new advanced features. But we must understand it comes at a very premium cost!

Yes, because what would they do without their snapchat and angry birds. Smartphones promised so much and really don't live up to the hype. All I see now is people having their frick'n face buried in it. Whether it's walking down the street, at their kids practice/game/performance, at the restaurant when they're THERE WITH SOMEONE, while driving, etc.

Freak'n bunch of zombies is what "smart" phones have made. And lets be honest, probably less than 5% of smartphone users are actually being productive on their phone.

Somebody mentioned it's a mini computer. If I wanted to spend $1000 on a computer I could get a pretty decent one and have full screen capacity, keyboard and a proper processor.

If I want a phone(!) on the other hand I dont want to lay out $1k
To a lot of people it is not a phone or a computer. It is a fashion accessory.
