Liverpool have the pedigree, the history, the tradition, at CL level - they reached the final as recently as last year; this is something that they can draw upon.

Yes, the second round will be a tough match, but there is no reason that they cannot win.

Spurs did very well, and that was an impressive win.
But you’d not bet against Man City getting a goal at home.

Man City will score, and without Kane Spurs are likely sunk, regardless of Son's undoubted brilliance. Still, Spurs have the home shutout and away goal advantage (should they score in the second leg). So even if I am giving them little chance of progressing, I think we could see a very tight finish.

Then again, City could blow them away and I would not be surprised. It is hard or overemphasize just how much of an advantage Man City have over just about everyone else at the moment in terms of money and talent. Even in a one-off match it makes a massive difference.

Agreed.
I don’t fancy Manchester United’s chances tonight. Their form hasn’t been as good of late and I don’t think they are in the same league as Barcelona.

Manchester City have yet to deliver at CL level; granted, if Kane is indeed injured, Spurs have a serious challenge on their hands.

Nevertheless, for all of their undoubted talent, City have underachieved so far in Europe.

Agreed.

I'm inclined to agree with you.

Barca are having a strong season, and have beaten better versions of Man Utd in the past. Man Utd's best chance at progressing is to not concede a goal today, and then hope for a lucky break in the second leg. Speaking of which, I'm beginning to get tired of the away goals rule. it's really beginning to dominate proceedings to an unfortunate degree. I am not sure it is a good idea anymore.

Luke Shaw vs Messi and Suarez....

The away goal is supposed to make the away teams chase the game. But all it does is makes the home team want to defend!

...speaking of Luke Shaw, he just deflected a Suarez header into his own net, though it looks as though Suarez is getting credit for the goal. Slightly unlucky but Barca are already looking really lethal and halftime is a long way off yet.

Hard to not see them as favorites for the CL this season, unless something drastic changes...

They gave the OG to Shaw in the end.

Other than that bit of horribleness from Shaw, United have been playing them very even. McTominay in particular has been excellent.

Barca seemed to take their foot off the gas after their goal, and Man United started upping their game at about the same time. Since then it has gotten kind of sloppy. Messi has had the snot kicked out of him, he looks like he's been in a bar fight.

At the moment, (contradicting my earlier post) neither team look like Champions of Europe, though there is plenty of football left to play. Man Utd won't like the result if it ends 1-0 but their performance was close enough to Barca's today that the second leg is still very much up for grabs.

Barcelona will be a different team at the Nourishments Camp I think. United have had some sloppy play. Giving away silly balls. But I think they are doing better in this half.

'Spurs look lively today... Hah.
[doublepost=1555155671][/doublepost]And I spoke too soon. That was a close one.
[doublepost=1555156548][/doublepost]Shall be known as "Flight of the Wanyama" from now on.
[doublepost=1555156667][/doublepost]Aggressive attack and goal by Moura. Really nice. I'm more awake now than I was 10 minutes ago. Wish I'd grabbed some cornichons for a pre-breakfast snack.

Status quo maintained...It was never going to be an easy match, and Liverpool benefitted from some woeful finishing by Chelsea, but overall they deserved the win. Salah's goal was a worldie.

Meanwhile, in MLS...Over the weekend Minnesota United played their first match in their brand new stadium, Allianz Arena. I had a chance to travel with a season ticket-holding friend to watch the match against NYCFC, which ended 3-3. Lots of sloppy defending on both sides, which made for an exciting contest! Lovely venue, MNUTD fans are lucky. I can't wait till Columbus start work their own new stadium project.
