Apparently we’ve signed Dagny Brynjarsdottir. Had to copy and paste that one!
Also agreed to the loan signing of Lingard. Hope he’s fit. I suspect he won’t be match fit.

Liverpool was outstanding today. Spurs set back deep and they still cut through them like a hot knife through butter. Makes the FA Cup victory at the weekend feel even better. Have to brush aside the Sheffield result and move on.

Does Lingard have much chance of breaking into West Ham's starting XI? He's no world class talent, but he's a good lad who can make some things happen on the pitch, and he's not as bad as his 2019-2020 form was. This season he's been unlucky with being forced to quarantine for COVID-19 exposure a couple of times, and the presence of Fernandes and Van de Beek in the squad means zero opportunities for him to play.

I think he’ll need to prove his fitness and mostly be cover for Antonio. Can’t see them playing together too often.

I thought this was funny:

Jose Mourinho, Mike Arteta, Jurgen Kopp and Steve Bruce went into a pub. Jose bought them all a drink. Once they had finished, Arteta got a round in. Then Kopp put his hand in his pocket, then Bruce got the beers in.
Once they'd all consumed 4 beers, Jose went to the bar and bought a drink for himself only. Then sat back at the table. They all looked at him before Arteta said "Excuse me Jose, what about us?"
Jose looked at them and said " Sorry lads. This is the fifth round and none of you are in it."

The game of musical chairs at the top of the league continues. Man Utd slip up, Liverpool rediscover a bit of form, but West Ham are breathing down their necks....Man City are looking increasingly robust, even without KDB. Let's not forget they're the richest team with the deepest squad.

Klopp remains committed to an unaltered pressing game, in a year where even Guardiola has made stylistic concessions and pretty much the entire campaign will have to be played with an ersatz central defense. It was a disastrous choice against Man Utd, as I predicted, but it also worked brilliantly against Spurs. Liverpool can't win a title without their first choice defenders, but if the forwards find and maintain form, and the back line is "good enough," a top four finish is still a reasonable target - especially with the clubs around them being equally inconsistent.

As for Tuchel, probably not a bad appointment. As mentioned here already, Tuchel is not a good long-term choice, but Chelsea don't work that way anyway. It is reasonable to expect him to improve on Lampard's performance in the short term and that's all that matters.

Spurs are toast without Kane.

Well I think we can all agree it’s a better year than last years bore feast. I enjoy an open league where anyone of 4-5 teams can still win it at the halfway stage.

I think it’s funny you mention that Man City are the richest team when you are probably the third richest? It’s not about money (look at Leicester). It’s about playing together as a team.

One word...Yuck! I don't like ties!

You mean a draw?

It is part of the world of soccer, and somtimes, a tactical draw can almost count as a victory.

In fact, surprisingly often, there is a team which (psychologically) "won" the draw, - claiming a point when they could (or should) have been defeated, or, defended superbly in testing circumstances, or clawed a point by scoring an improbable - but well-struck - goal, seizing opportunity, to snatch a (perhaps, belated) point - and, sometimes, there is another team which feels as though it "lost" the draw, or tie, (by - perhaps - failing to secure victory in a game in which they should have done so.)

However, tonight's game - hard fought - will not (really) have either team feeling that they should have won (or lost); a draw sounds about right.

Cagey match between Arsenal and Man Utd. Not unlike the draw at Anfield.

Oh, Liverpool aren't exactly starving, you're absolutely correct. And yes, playing as a team is really important. Wolves do that as well as any team in the league I'd argue - and they just don't have the money to buy the talent needed to win the league. Leeds are a more cohesive unit than Man Utd or Chelsea (for example), but they have no chance of winning the title either. With a half a billion pounds worth of talent maybe they could. You need a team to win the league - but a very expensive team.

So it is about money. Sure, in theory (and, rarely, in actual fact) any team could win the league. But if you look at the numbers over the long term, the money table and the league table align reasonably well. Richer teams place higher and win more trophies. Man City's success (and Man Utd's, and Chelsea's, and yes, Liverpool's recent success too) is built on wealth more than any other single factor.

So with that in mind, the most open league campaigns occur when 1) the rich teams all underperform for some reason, letting in a dark horse (true in 2016 and possibly this season) OR 2) there are enough similarly rich teams that there is some form of genuine title race.

Well, good luck AFB. 'Pool are missing Mané today and once again Matip is not available. Firmino drops to the bench, so you're only facing Salah, Shaq, and Origi up front. If you can put pressure on our central defense it will crack. The midfield looks reasonably solid though. We shall see what happens.

Apparently Salah is enough so far.

Salah looked more like his old self, his second goal was excellent. He needed to be good today, with Mané out and Firmino only on the bench. Origi is declining and while I am a big fan of Shaqiri he does not offer the same dynamism as Bobby Firmino. He can pick out a heck of a pass though.

West Ham looked threatening in the first half in particular, and will probably think they should have had more joy with their set pieces, which were dangerous. Liverpool rode their luck on a couple West Ham counters and looked toothless again in the first half. But they woke up in the second half and played the kind of football that won them the title last season.

Villa and Leicester losing softens the blow for the Hammers somewhat. The top ten is still pretty tight, though Man City are in the drivers' seat. Liverpool need to take points off them at their next meeting or they could really start pulling away.

We didn’t push hard enough today when we had the opportunity. Salah was the big difference. But he probably would cost the same as half of our team!
I was surprised to read he’s the first Liverpool player to score 20+ goal four seasons in a row since Ian Rush though!

Liverpool has had many great attacking players during that period, but the likes of Torres and Suarez suffered their share of injuries and inconsistency.

And all of a sudden, Salah looks back to his best.

Re Arsenal vs United: it was a funny match, both clubs can be both satisfied and dissatisfied with the result. I thought United edged it overall, but weren't quite sharp enough in front of goal to beat some excellent keeping and defending on Arsenal's part. Leno's stop on Fred's curler in particular was a fantastic save. Rashford had one great chance where Leno left his line and closed him off perfectly. Still, none of United's attackers look threatening at the moment, which is a big worry.

Maybe Ole should pull on his boots!

It took some pretty skillful goals to beat West Ham today, so it was hardly a walkover. Had West Ham converted one of their set pieces earlier in the match things might have gone differently.

Re; Salah with three 20+ goal seasons, Robbie Fowler came pretty close to doing it in the 90s. As Silencio said, Liverpool's best strikers during the 2000s and 2010s were world-class a times were never as consistent. Salah also benefits from having the best Liverpool team around him since Rush's day. Suarez in his prime would bag a lot of goals with this group around him.

OGS aways takes a cautious approach to big matches. But in this match it seems both clubs struggled with finishing. Arteta will probably be the happier manager, but this season is so open that it's harder than usual to draw conclusions from any single game.

Spurs currently losing to Brighton, that would give the Hammers some extra breathing space. Bale started, did very little, and just got yanked. Looks like his return to Spurs is not going to pan out.

Arsenal's defence (finally, not before time) seems to be improving, and Arsenal also had a one great shot which struck the crossbar (while aother good chance was spurned).

I'm okay with the draw, as enither side could claim they were robbed.

Liverpool back to their imperious best earlier today, while Manchester City grind out a victory, and Leicester (lackig Vardy) fall to Leeds.
