The one narrative that makes me laugh as an air user is the poor battery life

If ur head is so buried into “tech” or ur phone all day then ur probably no longer living in the physical reality.

But not everyone has the same scenario. Some people are not close to a charger all day and work long hours, or ride public transit. Some people don’t live or work in great reception areas that hurt battery life. Some people just use there phone more than others but aren’t glued to them.

I see a lot of hand wringing over the battery life of the Air. Obviously, a phone this thin is not going to have the same battery life as a heavier phone with a larger battery. There are always trade-offs.

As with most things in life, everyone has different needs. As you can see by my battery data, the Air’s battery is far beyond sufficient for my needs. For those who need more capacity, there’s always the battery pack or the Pro Max. Pick the tool that fits the job you need it to do…

I get near 2 days out of my 16 pro, guess the air would be similar for my usage.

There are just as much "hate" as "copes" like the "Air's speaker is in fact so good it's better than my home theater system". Yes I remember actually reading that. I have no hate towards any of that that's just how online forums go.

For me I had to return the Air because the usb port is way too lacking to be useful in my workflow. The design can't overcome all the little things that are lacking. Doesn't mean I hate the phone.

But do consider this: the majority of those who have ever owned an iPhone should have been okay with battery life in iPhone X and Xs some years ago.

Air factually lasts like twice as long as iPhone X/Xs.

But suddenly it is no longer enough battery life for "most people"?

I think that's the more realistic question to ask, rather than the hypothetical scenarios you are thinking of. How did people even work with these past iPhones?

Mind, we used to have phones that would last weeks... back before the first iPhone came out. Why did we not complain about the loss of 80% of battery life back then when everyone started switching over to "smart" phones? Why complain now?

My personal opinion is... the "compromises" are not actual compromises. Air is basically a "super" version of the iPhone 6 from a decade ago. Back when we used to have thinner and lighter phones. We have actually "compromised" on thickness all in the name of more battery life and more cameras. Sort of like going backward too far into the early 2000s when we had bricks for cell phones.

I guess some are okay with that but I've always thought for decades that as technology progresses, we should get thinner, lighter and more capable devices. But we've hit a plateau. We can either go backward with thickness and weight to try and have more capabilities or we can have thin and light with less capabilities. Looks like the "thicker and more cameras" camp is winning in reality.

That is fine, but I think a lot of younger folks forget Apple's golden years were with thinner, lighter and smaller phones that barely lasted through just one day. The cameras were just workable back then. Now people get a single 48MP sensor and they're thinking "it's not enough", which is comical to me.
for me, the iPhone Air is the true successor to the iPhone XS Max

Absolutely loved the XS Max. both have a beautiful design. both have a 1x and 2x cameras. and i bet the Air gets better battery life than the XS Max ever did.

So excited to get my Air

Apparently they all need to shoot 4K ProRes RAW then edit it on the phone and upload it on mmWave 5G data, but also not run out of battery after doing that for 12 hours straight or something.

That is what people are doing with their Pros right?

Yes, fun fact: I am looking at a XS Max now. Air does in fact last 2x longer on battery for me than XS Max back when XS Max first came out. I remember the phone lasting barely until the end of the day. But Air is handily 2 days for me.

And of course Air's speaker is also better/louder and the camera at 2x is actually sharper than XS Max too, despite both having 12MP at 2x.

How do you know this? I am curious to see where you got the sales numbers. Few years back you would have though on macrumors iPhone mini was best selling iPhone.
The Apple and Verizon stores I have been to, and I have been many times, there is no one looking at the Air. Every time I see a box open for set up or people walking around asking about stock it's pretty much the Pro Max over everything else. I talked to a sales rep at a carrier and they said they really hadn't sold any Airs and MKBHD cited Dbrands sales figures for the 17 series accessories. The air was around 5% of total sales if I remember correctly. It's odd because I think think the form factor is really cool, but go to any Apple Store and people are clamoring around the Pro models and no one is paying attention to the Air. It's a sales failure IMO.

Yeah, this sounds increasingly like what the other side is saying. They basically "need" all of these features now. Features that were missing in phones from some years ago. It really makes me wonder how people got by with iPhone 12/13/14. Air is about the same battery life as 14 Pro Max give or take but it's seemingly "not enough" now...

This is not surprising. We have been well trained to think we need more than we actually need (FOMO is real).

Yes, and since people keep bringing up sales for some reason, there’s a simple explanation for the numbers.

Most people just want the “Biggest and Best” iPhone. The one that has the most stuff. The Biggest screen. The Biggest battery. So if they can afford it, obviously they will get that one.

I am pretty sure the Pro Max is the bestseller because it’s literally the highest tier on the price ladder. It’s the one that doesn’t have any model above it. Because people who are upgrading to Pro phones probably already have Pro phones and they have to have the new top of the line one. That’s all the logic most people need when buying the new phone every year.

Remember, the mini and Plus models faced the same low sales. No average iPhone buyer cares about the model that doesn’t already ring a bell to them, especially when it’s vaguely priced in the middle of the lineup, and it’s again, not the “Biggest and Best One.”

If Apple releases an “iPhone Ultra” for $2,000, even if it’s not a foldable, you can bet the sales for that phone will also be the highest of the lineup. It’s really that simple.

For me it’s crazy that people are trying to dismiss any concerns people might have with things like the battery. I have an IPad Pro from 2021 and I can take it off the charger at 100% and literally watch the life drain out of it in a few hours, even though Apple says my battery capacity is above 80%. My coworker is upgrading to an 17 Pro this year from an IPhone 11 Plus. He keeps his phone for 6 to 7 years. Would you personally recommend an Air to someone in this same scenario knowing that batteries degrade over years time.

No but it is nice to be able to take ultrawide or high quality 4x photos every now and then, or connect my phone to a big screen through display port when I work out. We don't full send our cars 120mph all day long then why don't we all buy cars that cap at 45mph?

Yeah man, it was a joke. I had to exaggerate a bit. Obviously there’s benefits on the Pros missing from the Air.

And there’s benefits on Air missing from the Pros. I hold my phone all day. I’ll never feel it anymore, compared to on my 16 Pro. Yes the ounce makes a difference.

It’s same story every year a different model and all these anecdotes fall flat when Apple releases the actual numbers. Last year 16Pro max wasn’t selling because it was available and perception was no one was buying because you could walk in and buy.

Not sure if you were here last year, Pro max was in the dog house for supposedly poor sales. This year it’s air and suddenly pro max is in pent house and is best selling phone.

His scenario is niche. Most people I know upgrade yearly or every other year.
