What a shame! Here we are all waiting for the new ios 4.2 release and excited about new features and we get an announcement like this??

To all the faithful Apple folks... there is no need to defend this marketing strategy. They should have been a bit more subtle about this announcement. By defending this joke of an announcement, you are making yourself look like you will follow Apple off a cliff.

This was a joke! I can't believe Apple used everyone's attention and focus on the company's new product launch and threw out this big hype. I feel like I was taken advantage of...lol

Like I said before...this would have been big news in the 60's.

Good Lord! You know who are freaking out about this? People WAY to invested in what Apple's going to announce. I like Apple, but I didn't expect anything they announced today to change the world. Now, who is the one following Apple a bit too closely, me or you?

Really?

Is there on person who loves the Beatles that doesn't have the CD ripped to his Ipod by now? I mean even President G W Bush had them on his Ipod. I'm starting to believe that if Jobs had a baby he would announce every diaper change.

What's wrong with The Beatles being on iTunes? I think it's a huge step forward, as it shows that now there are no disadvantages of iTunes over CDs. If you can get everything on iTunes that you can get on CDs, than why bother with CDs? Of course there will always be exceptions, but The Beatles was a big one missing from the iTunes store. Even if you don't like them, this is good for everyone.
The major problem with itunes is that not every album has a special insert pdf. Cds have special inserts on the covers that give you messages from the artists, art, and lyrics. Not every album and song on itunes has these. None of the stuff I've bought from itunes has these. Get those and I'm on board. This announcement is no different than any other band being on itunes. Yes, the beatles are better than any of the others but that doesn't mean apple needed to hype it.

You realize that The Beatles have sold over twice as many albums in the US as AC/DC?

The Beatles record sales to date: Over 1.3 billion albums.

Michael Jackson's estimated sales to date: Over 750 million albums.

yay! Beatles had 50 yrs time to achieve this... they are about 20 yrs ahead of ac/dc.

I swear, I've never understood why people liked the Beatles so much. They weren't especially good instrumentalists, they weren't good volcalists, they didn't harmonize well, and their tunes weren't especially catchy, and their lyrics weren't especially interesting or deep. Why the hell were they so popular?

Of course, my favorite band is They Might Be Giants, so there's no accounting for taste. :) At least their songs are catchy, they have good instrumentals (even if some of them are electronic), they harmonize well, and their lyrics have meaning below the surface.

It's pop music--good instrumentalists, vocalists, and harmonization have almost never been evident by anybody, including Giants, if you want to be critical. Doesn't matter...it's pop music, not opera.

"Their tunes weren't especially catchy"? Let's just say you're not supposed to like the music of your parents--or even your older siblings. Back then you could travel to the most remote regions of the world for decades and people were singing, humming, whistling, or listening to ten thousand covers of Beatle songs. They were bigger than anything your young mind could possibly imagine. Even bigger than whatever groups or acts you just thought of in rebuttal, combined.

That was then, this is now, and this event is a 10-15 years too late, and I doubt that anyone will remember past next week.

You're smoking something if you think that Michael Jackson was bigger and more popular than The Beatles. Serious reality check. I listen to his stuff more than theirs, but they were still bigger 7 days a week and twice on Sunday (or Tuesday).

Are you sure about that not gonna fight but Michael owned them literally he purchased the hole song book as well as his own!

This forum never fails to amuse me:

1) "The Beatles are crap!" Yes, Junior and Little Suzy. Go back to your Justin Bieber and leave the grown-ups alone, please. Any one with any sense of Rock and Roll history knows how big the Beatles were and how much of an influence they continue to be.

2) "Boring! Apple really blew it!" You guys DO know how advertising works, right? I mean, no one in the world is really "in love" with McDonald's McRib . . . are they? No one actually thinks the iPad is "magical" . . . do they? It's hype, people. This is what companies are supposed to create! Besides, this is an event that has been a long time coming . . . since Apple first opened iTunes we've all been speculating, here and elsewhere, when the Beatles will finally be on iTunes. It's a big event in the history of iTunes, whether you care or not and it will have a big impact, not just on sales, but on the availability of other hold-out artists.

3) "I already have the Beatles on CD, this is meaningless to me." Oh, I didn't realize you represented the entire population of the world! There are plenty of people who still don't have their stuff, including a whole generation of younger listeners who have never bought a CD.

4) "No lossless! Boo!" Please. Chances are you don't have the equipment or the ears to tell the difference between a 256kbps AAC and a lossless file.

Bottom line: If you are disappointed, you only have your fervid imagination to blame. Apple has every right to be excited by this announcement and it's not like they set up a huge event or even huge expectations for this. Just a brilliant ad campaign that stole the thunder from Facebook and captured all our interest. Kudos to Apple and it's brilliant PR department.

Well said

Jobs loves The Beatles. He has done so much work in trying to create and perfect incredible products for us all. Can't the man have ONE day for himself?

I guess the tagline yesterday should've read: "Tomorrow is just another day. . .I'll never forget. -Steve"

Disappointed

I just sampled the box set (re-mastered) and it sounds horrible! Most of the songs are soOoo over polished as they sound nothing like the originals. Sounds very tight, tinney and lacks the warmth that made the songs famous. A true discredit to the most influential band of the 20th century.:(

You gotta be kidding me...

Since according to macswitcha2, I fall into the "self-absorbed" category, what the heck...

.... this is about as exciting as me announcing to my wife that I finally fixed (whatever) around the house. Useful, perhaps mildly important in that long-term-good-to-know-maybe-we-can-do-something-with-it-someday sort of way.

I mean, yeah, the Beatles were (are?) great... but I think this whole event ranks far, far, far more in the "self-absorbed" category than the rest of us whining about it!

4) "No lossless! Boo!" Please. Chances are you don't have the equipment or the ears to tell the difference between a 256kbps AAC and a lossless file.

I'm not quite sure why you'd assert that.

And even if were true, which in my case it isn't, purchasing an entire collection of recorded works in anything but an archival format seems nutty to me.

Right. When Apple called today "a day you'll never forget", we were in the wrong to expect a lot more than just a band being feature on iTunes.
Then stop speculating and getting your hopes up with uneducated guesses.
Any Beatles fan knew it was going to be a Beatles related announcement. Even I did, and I am not a fan. Not that I have anything against them either.

I was at ease and he has broken me asunder - he has crushed me.

A day to remember. Oh foolish one where does your help come from ...

Who would have thought so many people's day would be ruined by this. Seriously, if this is the only thing you have to complain about- you are either a loser or you have a very cushy life. It's not like they announced that the iPhone line is going to be discontinued....relax!

Geeze, very tough crowd here this morning. Lots of "Beatles suck" venom being spewed.
I guess we can all listen to the biggest act of today "Lady Gaga" and really appreciate good music!

Yay. The overrated Beatles. Who cares.

I consistently hear from people that the The Beatles are overrated. However, if you ever actually read the history of music. The Beatles were a defining moment in the development of Rock music. It is really incredible, they were around 40 years ago, and they are still relevant.

As for the announcement, people always build up what they want, so they will be disappointed. People don't really think about these things, if it was anything like cloud-based storage, don't you think that Steve would hold a conference about that? That's a pretty big development. But then again people don't really think about it, they just want it.

To all you lame complainers here with no life, if this news upsets you so much, why don't you post some links to some awesome announcements in the PC world? Enlighten us on something exciting about I.E 9.

IE9 would actually be more exciting, no seriously!
