The band is irrelevant to some of the previous generation, most of the current, and all future generations musical tastes.
That has gotta be the dumbest thing I've read in ages. Although not a fan of the Beatles in particular, I am a fan of many bands and musicians that were influenced by them. You'd realise the same, if your head wasn't so far up your arse.

This forum never fails to amuse me:

1) "The Beatles are crap!" Yes, Junior and Little Suzy. Go back to your Justin Bieber and leave the grown-ups alone, please. Any one with any sense of Rock and Roll history knows how big the Beatles were and how much of an influence they continue to be.

2) "Boring! Apple really blew it!" You guys DO know how advertising works, right? I mean, no one in the world is really "in love" with McDonald's McRib . . . are they? No one actually thinks the iPad is "magical" . . . do they? It's hype, people. This is what companies are supposed to create! Besides, this is an event that has been a long time coming . . . since Apple first opened iTunes we've all been speculating, here and elsewhere, when the Beatles will finally be on iTunes. It's a big event in the history of iTunes, whether you care or not and it will have a big impact, not just on sales, but on the availability of other hold-out artists.

3) "I already have the Beatles on CD, this is meaningless to me." Oh, I didn't realize you represented the entire population of the world! There are plenty of people who still don't have their stuff, including a whole generation of younger listeners who have never bought a CD.

4) "No lossless! Boo!" Please. Chances are you don't have the equipment or the ears to tell the difference between a 256kbps AAC and a lossless file.

Bottom line: If you are disappointed, you only have your fervid imagination to blame. Apple has every right to be excited by this announcement and it's not like they set up a huge event or even huge expectations for this. Just a brilliant ad campaign that stole the thunder from Facebook and captured all our interest. Kudos to Apple and it's brilliant PR department.

The Beatles - Yuck.

I'd rather listen to Rick Roll on repeat than be subject to such shocking overrated music.

Really disappointed that apple pushes the teaser announcement to the 1st page all over the world for 24 hours for this announcement. Apple as a brand took a hit from this teaser in my mind. If they use their whole front page to announce something I expect it to be more then a great band is coming to iTunes. In my mind it would have been more apple to skip the teaser and go directly to the PR they are doing today. The teaser made it seem like apple had actually done something (more then signing a paper).

This is why I rate this article negative

You are mistaken. You can go into best buy and get the Beatles back catalogue digitally. It's called a CD. Information stored on it is digital. Put it in your computer and let iTunes transfer the data into your iTunes library (which is trivially simple, there's a button right in the menu) and you'll have the Beatles on your iDevices as well. And at much higher quality than a download I might add.

Vinyl = Analog
CD = Digital

The Beatles have been distributing their music digitally for a long time now.

It's also been available on a special USB drive in the type of 'digital' they meant.

I think it's a huge step forward, as it shows that now there are no disadvantages of iTunes over CDs. If you can get everything on iTunes that you can get on CDs, than why bother with CDs?

Um, quality?

320kbps isn't even comparable to CD (1411kbps) quality.

Mono Beatles

they could have at least offered up the limited edition Mono versions too just to make them more accessible.

i can already smell the Hitler Freakout:

Fuhrer, the Beatles were released on iTunes.
"WHAT THE HELL?! YOU MEAN I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT, BACKING UP MY IPHONE, IPOD, APPLE TV AND IPAD FOR THIS HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT, AND ALL THEY SAID IS I CAN DOWNLOAD **** I'VE ALREADY HAD FOR FIVE YEARS OFF BITTORRENT?!"

yeah, it should be good.

To all you lame complainers here with no life, if this news upsets you so much, why don't you post some links to some awesome announcements in the PC world? Enlighten us on something exciting about I.E 9.

I don't have a single Beatles song on my ipod and never will. Maybe some younger fans will try some of their music. I suppose you would have to be a certain age to be interested in this story.

Steve Jobs loves the Beattles and I guess that is why he wanted this hype built up...I guess now he can have his favorite music directly from the itunes store.

All this hype for this little anouncement is stupid.Very, very disapointed!!!
Apple sucked big time, who was the clown that has done that?
Registered as another day of infamy...

Boy, you guys are fickle. This wasn't even on the radar yesterday morning, Apple didn't even make that big of deal about it. Give them props for finally landing this one. If you're disappointed, you only have yourself to blame. It's not like everyone last night had predicted that this was where it was headed.

Not that big of a deal? They only altered the front page of their website. They created the hype.

Just watch the Washington show to see how this band changed the world of music - amazing.

This.

Being able to watch the whole 40 minute concert free in iTunes is ace. And can't help but show up how few of today's pampered groups could actually perform to that standard, with no safety nets, no fancy PA systems, nowt.

It's rather amusing how all the MacGeeks have their knickers in a twist over this :D But also, the Beatles are almost sure to have most of the top 40 chart positions, now that downloads count. Out in the real world, people will be downloading these by the million.
(Here in the geeks paradise of course it's all "u can download these 4 free from da torrentz lulz!!!111!)

The Beatles are the greatest single band in world history. Being on iTunes is probably the single biggest musical win for Apple in iTunes history. I think that SJ wanted this forever, and today is his day to check another thing off his list of accomplishments.

Been a big year over there at Cupertino.

Might not be all win for people expecting more, but nobody can deny this is the worlds finest catalog that was for many years missing from Apples storefront.

So everything has to be about you ? This is positive news even if it doesn't apply to you.

Considering the Beatles are broken up, Michael Jackson is dead, and these tracks are over 40 years old, it's not a big deal. It would be like Amazon getting excited about being able to sell John Steinbeck's books.

What's wrong with The Beatles being on iTunes? I think it's a huge step forward, as it shows that now there are no disadvantages of iTunes over CDs. If you can get everything on iTunes that you can get on CDs, than why bother with CDs?

Some people still enjoy album artwork, liner notes, printed lyrics, the ability to rip the music at whatever bit rate they choose, and some like to have the physical disc for archival purposes. Hard drives die, computers get stolen, etc. But if you have the disc, you can always re-rip the music.

big whoop. but at least i won't have to hear that the beatles are coming to itunes everytime there is a hint of itunes news for the last 5 years. now where are those mockups for the yellow submarine ipod photo i remember seeing?
