Shock horror - an incredibly profitable online record store makes a big marketing drive out of the fact that they are now selling one of the biggest groups (in terms of revenue and record sales) of all time. Did you really think they wouldn't use this as a publicity generator?! Oh sorry, I should tow the line - bad bad Apple for advertising things.

Sir Paul must have been down to his last gazillion after that nasty divorce...this should prop him up a bit longer. Only plausible explanation.

Was that it ?

Like many point out, already got all the music.

As for an "influential" and "beloved" band, they're somewhere down below Abba, Elvis, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. Some might have their own list of more beloved and influential bands / solo artitsts.

What I notice is that you're incredibly worked up over seven static words that appeared on a corporate Web site for less than 24 hours. No press release, no TV ads, no Web ads, no press event... Nothing but a single two line graphic on Apple's own Web site. From my POV Apple under hyped this and people like you vastly over reacted both before and after the announcement.

i'm not incredibly worked up, i just think this is complete non-news and you can't handle that.

be ready tomorrow at 8am for the best news of your life!!!!! you will tell your grandkids about this 20 years from now!!!!!

you don't think other websites are gonna pick up on that? the media put it on all the websites. you don't think that was apple's intent?

if they didn't want the hype, they wouldn't have put anything on their website. stories wouldn't have been on news sites and macrumors wouldn't have had any other threads about it.

marketing genius? yeah right!

build a case? you gotz to be kidding haha.

200 positives, 1,100 negatives. hmmmm

So far a net of 900 people who will not buy Beatles songs and many many clearly who don't understand their significance and brilliance.

Once classic song after another . Between longevity and genius there aren't too many bands around with the same track record.

Watch the sales numbers , even after the initial hype dies down.

Beatles forever!

PS: Hey Apple, a little bit over the top? Already forgot what day it is.
Oh, Tuesday, must be Beatles.
Wednesday, must be Belgium :)

Ouch! Dead or close to it? I'm amazed people are killing off Generation X folks just because they turn 30. :) I don't care what you think of it, but the Beatles were a phenomenon. Yes, there are a lot of great artists out there, but there's only but so many true world Phenoms out there. Whether you love, hate, or are indifferent to the Beatles, the fact still remains.

I don't jump all over people for being all into Elvis Prestley. Though I'm indifferent to him, I still recognize when he's had such a huge following.

But considering the announcements that Apple makes about *music* and availability. They the main computer company that actually has entire conference appearances about music. With so many requests for iTunes to have the Beatles, over the years, I don't really think this was so out of left field.

It IS tuesday. Man. This calls for an altered reference to Raul Julia in Street Fighter. (Best line from the movie)

Bison: For you, that day will be remembered as the day a life-changing event happened. For me........it was a Tuesday.

It really does boil down to perspective.

Wow, surprised how many punks here are putting down the greatest band in the history of Rock.
Go back to listening to your quality music of Eminem, Kanye West and various other Bass Thumping worthless cRap Music.
Sad how many people have grown up with no musical taste whatsoever.

Really?!

Let's look back 50 years ago, people (probably the age you are now) were saying the exact thing about The Beatles and rock and roll. Tastes differ between generations. Eminem and Kanye West are actually pretty good at writing songs, but hey, I suppose those kids better get off your damn lawn, huh?

amen to that brother! q64ceo is probably one these morons that posted this review on the boxset...

That's not very nice. And no, this is the only place that I have talked about this. Not too many people that I know use Macs.

the Beattles are not worthy of such a publicity...

please explain to me the extent of the massive campaign that Apple waged to hype this event. How many ads did they buy on TV, in magazines and on Web sites? How large was the press event where Steve made the announcement? What kind of content was on the mini-site that Apple built to promote it?

Oh, wait. All they did was post a single graphic to their corporate Web site for less than 24 hours.

waooo

This was the worst announcement ever. I was expecting iOS4.2 or maybe even iPad v2 or something like that, instead we get this! Yippi we can buy beatles songs behhh

This is a perfect example on how Apple destroys their own power to hypt things. If the continue with pointless introduction like this maybe next time people will just wont care!

If all they're really announcing today is that they've finally cleared the Beatles catalogue for iTunes, then it's kind of dumb marketing. But hearing all the whining and bitching spilling over to people saying that they don't like the Beatles is truly dumb.

If you don't like The Beatles, then you should stick to your Bay City Rollers collections. If you don't like The Beatles, you don't like (and don't know anything about) music. Which is fine, there are other things to be interested in. Rocket science, field hockey, the list is endless. But stop whining about something you don't know anything about and have no appreciation of.

No, they WERE huge. 40 years ago.
Apparently, they still are (from 1 year ago):
Who Says CD Sales Are Dead? Remastered Beatles Sell 2.25 Million In 2 Weeks:
An excerpt:
US: During the first five days of release, consumers purchased more than one million copies of re-mastered Beatles titles, and the individual CD and boxed sets debuted strongly across multiple Billboard charts.
  • On Billboard's Comprehensive Albums chart, which lists the most popular album releases in the US, including current and catalogue titles, The Beatles set a new record for the most simultaneous titles by a single artist (18), including five of the top 10 and nine of the top 20.
  • On the Pop Catalog chart, The Beatles achieved another new Billboard chart first for the most simultaneous titles in the top 50 (16), a record they previously set themselves with 12 titles in December 1995. The Beatles have nine of the chart's top 10 titles, and all 14 re-mastered CDs are in the top 20, led by 'Abbey Road' at number one and 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' at number two.
  • On the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, 'The Beatles' stereo boxed set debuted at number 15, and 'The Beatles in Mono' limited edition boxed set debuted at number 40.
For those who think this isn't a big deal, wait till Apple releases iTunes Beatles sales figures.

This thread will be hitting 1000 posts soon - within the space of a couple of hours. It's certainly got everyone talking - so I guess, based on that, Apple were right in saying this will be a day we'll never forget

So because people are putting down music you like you think you have to put down music that other people like? Is that really the message that The Beatles music sounds out? Didn't think so.

You have it backwards. I have no problem handling it. You're the one chasing your tail in a fruitless attempt to smear Apple for one of the least hyped announcements they've ever made.

I guess you're one of the ancient hippies that actually doesn't already own every Beatles album and plans on buying this garbage! However, it's not as much of a put-down for The Beatles as it is for Apple thinking this actually should be considered monunmental or important! There are way too many features/servies they need to announce that would trumph this by a long shot! If you're a Beatles fan, you're either dead or getting close to it! I guess that's their target audience!

Wow, you need to be taken out back and shot.

Every major news website begs to differ with your opinion on their front pages right now.

You are right, CNN is all over the news. However, why such hype? The Beatles should be on the store, no question about that (even though I don't care) but why all the attention? It's not like their music was unavailable before...

haha i'm attempting to smear them? i just said it was non-news....that's it!

Cant believe so many people are posting their superior opinions on this site.

1.If you are so disappointed, get a life. It, (your life) should not depend on apple releasing new stuff.
2. It's simply called advertising. The Beatles.com released the same info at the same time. My simplest guess would be that it was part of the deal that Apple make a big announcement. Apple Corp wants to sell as many songs as they can. If it was not for Aspinal, this deal would have been struck ages ago.
3. For all those of you who state.. old music, who cares, garbage, there are new Beatles fans coming to age every year. This is why the Beatles have consistently sold records and discs and tapes and video and DVDs for the past 40 years. Some of todays most popular artists dont even sell as many songs (in iTunes speak) as the Beatles do every year.

+1, although be careful, you will get a private message saying that you are trolling... (happened to me once, I probably p*ssed off a virgin nerd with no life)
